Wtf? Why the fuck is lighting method needed to realize that the fat man with a chain-gun isn't a skinny man with a sniper rifle? Anybody else feel like this "how we did this" video is kind of like a "your all hopeless without reflective lighting" video?
First of all I didnt say anything was wrong with maps in TF2. They are as far as i know Still bound by TF2s rules of design to become a official map. What I did say was, The Sh!t that they pulled with the addition of the Unusual hats is unforgivable & completely destroyed the time capsule that the game is based in. Your excuse of them still being "cartoony" is a cheap cop out for them being a huge unwanted glare on the game & then some. PS: I dislike most FPS, TF2 was once an exception to that.
And they Completely destroyed all this with the introduction of the Unusual Hats that killed the TF2 Environment, Feel, and the value of everything else in the game. All this is now gone because someone who worked at Valve was waving Shiny Keys in front of there Cat and said "What if the TF2 hats had shiny things moving on them Constantly!" Now one of the best games in the last 10 years is Dead for me and for anyone who respected the game for what it was.
@Duskhart Ah yes it's dead for you, because the game still keeps the cartoony looks and the maps are still with this fine design showcased here. Enjoy Black Ops and Battlefield Heroes, I have sentries to sap.
... I wish I knew what they were talking about. I can get the jist of it, but all those terms I don't understand yet. Oh well. May as well get to learning if I'm ever to make a map.
this is actually really cool, as i have never actually noticed how much time they put on just the characters. It explains more how people are able to notice each character better
WHat I love is it's so beautiful and yet the simple layers for the render are actually rediculously easy for a computer to do. It's great looking and not processor-intensive!
couldn't agree more! this game is simply beautiful, to the point where you'd think a supercomputer would be needed to draw it all. and at the same time, it runs flawlessly on my mac, which doesn't even support windows games natively!... cept the spy. whenever the spy cloaks in the same room, i lag really badly =\
I looked at this same vid on gamespot; somebody said "Game delvelopers talk too much". Myself, I think us gamers are a highly opinionated bunch that is never satisfied, and never shuts up.
As a up-n'-coming graphic artist to those who are ignorant, I find this video very informative and very useful.
Damn, the guys at Valve are geniuses. This coupled with some of the psychology used in Portal. They's making me think exactly what they want me to think. It's awesome.
he mentions the name of a animated film style that i cant figure out how to spell?

The CoD teams and a huge load of other game developers could improve their skills several times just by listening a little to stuff like this.

@GoatboyX You don't need it, it just enhances the outline on the characters to make them easier to identify.

The background style was inspired by Miyazaki? That's kinda interesting. I wonder if any anime-haters who play TF2 know anything about that, LOL.
