  • 1978, Stampede Corral, My first concert, April Wine and Teaze. I,ve probably seen 450 rock shows since then and Jerry Mercer's solos still take the cake. I hope you guys are playing St. Johns this Summer ! ( If we get a summer ) Rock n Roll

  • GOOD VIBES!!!!!!

  • RUMBLIN THUNDER CLASSIC !

MERCER WAS ONE OF THE MOST INSPIRING OF THE DAY!

    AND REMAINS...

  • RUMBLIN THUNDER CLASSIC !

  • saw these guys in concert, he is a deadly drummer!! he just goes and goes and goes!! awesome!

  • @StCroixBoix - Jerry didnt retire, he only left April Wine. I met him this year at Cape Breton. He has moved to the Carribean to sudy more latin rhythms

  • Seen this performance live a hundred times being from Halifax, Nova Scotia!

  • see i knew santa could FUCKING ROCK !!!

  • Jerry will always be The BOMB!

  • Settle down everybody. Jerry is a very accomplished drummer, but no where near the level of Portnoy or Peart.

  • He and John Panozzo put on killer drum solos when they toured together... The two most underrated drummers of all time

  • freaking awesome

  • YEAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY JERRY!

  • As usual, the best drum solo I've ever seen!!! Man do I miss him!!

  • In my opinion Jerry Mercer is one of the MOST underrated drummers in music!.

  • simply insane drumming, he is truly missed from April Wine. God bless you Jerry in your retirement, may you ROCK THERE TOO! When you play Elks Logde one night, make sure the guitarists turn up enough k!

  • Yikes! Too bad he retired; but at 70, ya gotta get off the road and spend some time with family.

  • I played with Gerry Mercer's son, Mike Eyers (who is also a drummer) for 2 years and believe me, I can see where Mike got it from.

  • All time great and up there with Peart, Bozzio and Mcbrain from Iron Maiden,

  • Definately one of the all time greats. Right there with Peart, Bozzio, McBrain (Iron Maiden) in the Pantheon of drummers.

  • im from nova scotia, april wines home province, this guy is crazy he was like 70 years old when he did this!!

  • im from nova scotia, april wines home province, this guy is crazy he was like 70 years old when he did this!!

  • he is the single most under rated drummer/ i caught s stick of his at one one his shows, its chewed to shit.

  • I saw them live and met them after the concert.Awsome !!

  • holy shit

  • That was awesome.

  • The man is amazing. A lot of drummers are fast and precise while striking softly(and using amplification.)

Jerry hit them hard and hit them fast while still being precise.

  • 1:12

    holy EFF

  • Not bad for his age...have to admit. As for the comments regarding neil peart....decent drummer, but no where near the quality and versatility of Todd Sucherman. Give him a utube listen, and you will all have new drum idols.

  • WOW cool solo . almost about the best one I have seen. only other better is called dances or dancing with the devil . Only time I have ever heard it is live. Maybe someday I will find a recording.

  • saw em last week! so amazing

  • jerry mercer=f'n badass

    the man!

  • Mercer Rocks...and so does Neil Peart! I'd Like to see both of those two on stage as dueling drum solos!!!

  • @neon2k2 mercer is good but peart is gggrrrreat !!!

  • Drum God...4 sure...Jerry u were the best!!

  • Best drummer ever, hes nice, hes very talented, and very incredible that he was still drumming up to 70.

Not many people can drum at a high caliber when they are 70.

    Best drummer ever.

  • Hell Yea

  • I've watched this like twenty times and he amazes me every time. I think he's even a hair more talented than Neil Peart.

  • amazing drummer. period.

  • April Wine is my favorite rock band!!! I have been a fan for a very long time!! They truly hold a very special place within my heart!!! If they are within driving distance,I try go out and see their fabulous shows!!! Jerry's solo's were ALWAYS the highlight of their performances!!! Good Luck Jerry on your retirement, you are and always will be the best drummer around!!! With Love ad Best Wishes to you Jerry, you TRULY will be missed.....Love from, THE SIGN LADY----

  • Canada has some of the best drummers in the world....so cool

  • Jerry is a great guy and a great drummer as well. I would sit and have dinner with him and ask him questions about drumming. He is good friends with my friends mother, the y used to date in high school.

Seen April Wine in Calgary many times, I love the whistle in his drum solo's,

    Rock on Mr Mercer !!!!!!!!!!

  • i remember seeing him and the band playing in his garage.... i was a very voung kid back then and they were just amazing and still are...funny thing they still remember a young 7 yr old kid...

  • Saw them in 1980 or 81. He had two holders full of drum sticks. One on each side of him and during his solo he threw drum sticks into the crowd. That was right on.

  • Saw them in 1981. During his drum solo he had two holders on each side of him filled with drum sticks. He was throwing drum sticks into the crowd as he soloed. That was right on.

  • saw him perform in inuvic, nwt canada. about as far north as you can live in north america. it was amazing he is awsome

  • The best drummer i've seen and met 4 times.

The first time we saw him,was the first time he hit someone with a drum stick during this kind of solo.

he signed me the drumstick he hit my friend with lol.

    He's a really good guy :)

hope to see you come back one day on stage

  • My friend toured with April Wine and told what a really cool guy Gerry Mercer was. He said it was the best part of the tour.

  • * * * * *

  • My brother knows this guy he was his auto mechanic

  • He is absolutely assume! How old was he when he performed in this video?

  • 64, I think.

  • Incredible!

  • i met him! its a shame he retired! we will miss u jerry!!!

  • when did he retire? I just seen him like a year ago, and he blew my fuckin mind!

  • he kicks ass. that kit has a primal low tone that is unreal...

  • i went to school with his daughter outside of mtl, and he did a drum solo at one of our talent shows during the intermission. Just sat down and started to play, everyone was wondering wth was going on. Nobody moved for the entire 20 min intermission, and when he stopped, and we had picked our jaws up off the floor, well, the rest of the show just couldn't hold a torch!

  • wow!

  • He is fuckin' bad ass.

  • I am a Neil Peart fan but Jerry Mercer was the first drummer that kicked my ass! He is great!!!!

  • Yeah This dude is awesome. Used to catch them at La Semana in San Antonio every year in the early 80s.

  • wow that was totally insane

  • I'm really diggin his two frontal crash cymbals. They aren't used here but he now uses two 18 and 16 inch o-zone cymbals that just look amazing.

  • I just hope to have some lead in my pencil for 69 when im 69

  • MET THIS GUY! hes so fucking chill, he came and shook my hand, and then called me through security afterwards to talk to him cuz he thought i was cool shit, that was at the Perth Fair :) Good fucking times.

  • Madman!

  • Absolutely amazing drummer! One of the best in the world. And 69 years old? Eat that one Charlie Watts!

  • will be 70 next year!!!

  • The 5 stars are from me

  • This guys a freight train comming!!! I live in canada and have seen the band a few times, I have been a fan since they came out. Very proud of these guys yes we are!!

  • I saw AW in 1981 -- Jerry did the last part of the solo playing the kit bare handed without sticks! most amazing drum solo I have ever witnessed!

  • I seen these guys play last night. What a wicked solo. The whole band was awesome but I was waiting to hear this solo.

  • This guy has joined my family for sunday dinner. So brutal.

  • The splendid song !!!

    5*****

  • i had this video sent by a You Tube friend: glad that it was: Jerry Mercer has mind body control extrordinaire. i cranked the headphones up soaked it in. The timings to my interpretation are better than 1/1000 of a second. " i think this amazing skill, binds top musicians to one another " i can only listen and appreciate. You can observe this phenomena in orionedwin performance also. rather very rare gifted gentlemen. Real music ambassadors. thanks rtg. Vancouver Metro Ca.

  • great solo....Mel

  • Strong video! In my opinion, the deserved 5 stars!

  • Excellent!!! man can he beat those........

    Emi

  • It's difficult to compare fine drummers. Why bother. None is better than this guy at what he does and the way he does it. Jerry Mercer plays with such force, power and stamina only a few more finesseful, creative drummers have developed. He is a big, strong dude. Look at the arms and shoulders. Every stroke is a jackkhammer coming down. It's his style and it sells like hotcakes.

  • this guy is 69 years old

  • All the run Tommy Lee gets and this guy can out drum that punkass pussy with one hand.

  • he kinda looks like hulk hogan xD

  • so its true then...drums keep you young?

  • I think he needs more steroids...

  • I first saw them on a show I think was called "Night Flight" back in the late 70's and his solo was amazing then. Doesn't look like he's lost a beat.

  • He's an oldie..but a darn goodie

  • its too bad this man will never be recognized as much as some other of the great drummers like neil and john

  • Dont compare him with these drumers.Btw i really liked it.However its getting a little boring from 5:00 to the end.

  • rock and roll always keeps you young! i still listen all the time and i'm 46!!

  • i was there

  • hey who cares how old he is.....he rocks and always has....no offence to you and yours Gerry but....your solo's have always turned me on ......oh and i'm 44 is that young or old??

  • he sounds good

  • is jerry better at keeping time or soloing?

it is the 1st time i have seen or heard him play drums.

for a 69 yr old, its pretty cool..

  • i think hes better than neil peart

  • You go brother...............

  • In that video he's 64 or 65. When they came to PHK,NS he just turned 65. I've seen them four times so far. Each time it's more amazing.

  • He played in Alderney on his 65 birthday, and put on quite the show as well.

  • We LOVE you Jerry!!!!

  • I seen April Wine on Oct 13 and Jerry Mercer was AWESOME....the best, and most entertaining drum solo I think I have ever seen..fantastic show!!!!!

  • Jerry Mercer is absolutely amazing! At 69 years of age, he plays like a young man. It takes a lot of stamina to pound the skins for 8 minutes with the authority that he does!

  • I saw them on their Harder Faster tour...I guess about 1980?? Jerry blew me away then...but now I find out he's 69 years old in this video??? phenominal..amazing..

  • ok last good drum solo i ever saw was nicko mcbrain of maiden(piece of mind) & peter criss- 1978 kiss alive tour....jerry rocked but they could have added some better lights like the old days.....he still kicks azz....

  • if thats yer dar 4 real- tell him he still kicks a**- guitars were cheaper way back so thats what i di & jerry still rocks......long live the wine & jerry mercer....

  • That's my dad, he's still the best at 69 years old. Now that's awesome!

    Check out my drumming at

    "Capones live in Northbay Ontario"

    Cheers pop.

  • Great drummer. I've saw AW several times back in the 80's, met the band and they are all really down to Earth guys. Good to see they're stiil kicking ass after all of these years.

  • Man jerry Mercer is a God. his kit is awsome and his solo is fantastic

  • hahaha what was with the whistle solo?

  • Damn the Brother can beat the skins. Great band through alot of years!!!

  • ive met him before... just wondering around before the show nobody even recognized him... even with is sticks in hand, i shook his hand and we talked for a bit

  • fuck i just seen them in sydney nova scotia last night it was an ok show but jerry can play them drums man for sure 68 wow fuck i only wish to see 50 or even be walkin when i'm 68 amazing keep rockin man

  • oh shiznit nice man 68 thats gnarly

  • The guy is 68 years old to boot. Saw them in Sarnia. Awesome.

  • yea, i was there too- he is the best

  • hes aigt

  • ya, but dylan- he is 68 yrs old- most 68 year old dudes are walkin around with a cane in one hand, not a pair of drum sticks-lol

  • The BEST damn Drummer of the 80s' !!

    i seen them all....No contest!

  • who would win Jerry Mercer or Neil Peart?

  • Neil Peart.

  • Neil Peart!!!!

  • haha now that i think about it they used my ampeg svt-3 bass head at their concert tonight sounded better then when i play it this bands amazing

  • i saw jerry mercer play a drum solo at a concert tonight

  • i seen april wine tonight and his drum solo was insane too

  • I did record Kim Mitchell and April Wine as well.. Just missed the solo..so sad! They are up on you tube under my name. (Fireworks Too!) Which happen to be the best I have seen on here for 2007! ROCK 101 RULES!

  • Watched Jerry's solo tonite at the 2007 Canada Day celebration in Surrey, BC. From start to finish, it was absolutely, utterly amazing!

  • yea i was there too..he kicks fuckin ass...i cant believe there was 100 000 people there...

  • In the last minute of this video where he alternates his hands on the snare, that was insane...

  • I watched Jerry do this Tonight (July 1 2007) and MAN was it incredible...to bad my battery went dead or I would have recorded it - FANTASTIC!!!!

  • Caught them again live on Saturday in Kingston. The audience wasn't warmed up enough for real crowd participation unfortunately, but they put on a great show. Jerry did his best drum solo ever (I've seen them a pile of times) and got more audience cheers than the band together.

  • Dam, this dude should come and drum for "Mourning" good drummers are so hard to find these days!

  • jerry mercer is playing at the rocking rodeo to night in Moncton, NB and my best friends dad is best friends with him

  • cool i live in moncton whats your name

  • my 14 year old ,yes Peart,is the generations Buddy Rich ,nice solo though.has been..

  • actually he was 65 ;)

  • I've seen this twice, dude rocks. For real. They said he was 70 years old. Crazy!

  • omf that was top 3 i ever seen

  • i saw this drum solo live...and lest just say..it was the highlight of an amazing show..

  • where and when was it

  • my list of 3

17 year old at Woodstock with Santana

    John Bonham

    Keith Moon

  • man this solo is so damn catchy, how solos should be done haha

  • Neil Peart is outstanding mostly for his amazing timing...

  • ok, stop comparing, enjoy this guy's drumming, hes probably one of the only few drummers out there now with fuckng groove, none of this 250bpm solos, this is golden!

  • your right. blast beats show you can go fast. Jerry's creativity is awesome. inspirational.

  • are you kidding buddy rich is a fucking genius at the drums jerry is good but definately not as good as the mighty Rich!

  • Almost 68 yrs old...and just as good as always. Met him a few years ago, dedicated to the fans, very down to earth. Enfoy this man while we still have him!!

  • I just seen this guy tear it up last night. It was awesome how the rest of the band just steps off stage and leaves him to blow the crowds mind, best performance i have ever witnessed.

  • not special. but good.

  • KISS should have hired this guy to replace that worn out has-been Petter Criss! haha!

  • that's just... not my thing.

  • Neil Peart of Rush is supposed to be the best drummer in the world,..Jerry is up there with him!

  • Neil Peart is in a league of his own I wouldn't put Jerry in the same list as Peart that's for damn sure which isn't to say Jerry shouldn't be in the top 500 greatest rock drummers of all time because he definately should be in there somewhere.

I mean Peart isn't even human sometimes he's mind shatteringly good!

  • BILL WARD!!!

  • hes 67 years old this year and he can still play like that!!?? like c'mon theres no drummer better!
