I hate the thought of a Disney star of all things playing a role in one of my obsessions. But, after Zac Efron's performance in 17 Again, I feel he grew out of Disney could actually do a semi-decent job for the role of Light. As for any other disney stars? F*ck no.
Look. Zac Efron only started his movie career with High School Musical. There's no reason to linger on that when he's had so many other roles. So all of you people saying you don't want him just because he sings and dances can shut up. And remember, he's the right age for the role and certainly looks the part. The people who don't like that he may just play the role ought to keep their traps shut and actually see the movie before they judge it.
You need someone young to play Light, he's in Highschool I think Zac actually at least looks right for the role, I think we should give him a chance. Leonardo Decaprio started off as a teen hearthrob and developed into a great serious actor. Zac played light hearted roles that appeal mostly to girls so people are biased against him for that reason. I just hope the plot and the writing are good enough.Most movie adaptations suffer from taking away important parts, lingering on pointless crap.

despite not liking the idea of zac efron possibly playing light yagami, if there is an american remake, you have to admit, he does look quite similar to light yagami
they have the same hair however light's facial features are very sharp and cunning, you cant see that in zac efron and light is very very good looking too :) also what I am worried about the most is that you will have disney audiences who wouldn't even understand the story claim that it is better than the manga/anime, you watch this will happen if they ever decide to make the film with disney actors

dont get what people are making such a big deal about. I mean really, you dont want it dont watch it. Death Note is my favorite anime/manga but I would still give Efron a chance at this. i mean, gotta be honest, if Light was real, he would look exactly like Zac (except the eyes), and if it wasn't because of HSM people wouldn't be bitching about how he would screw up DN. also were more than halfway into 2011 and not even a trailer. I mean he has said in a video interview that he likes Death Note so I think he would do his best. I'm far from his biggest fan(Don't like HSM either), but I'm still gonna give the movie a chance even though American remakes in general tend to be crap. But it will be a new spin on things and might even bring more people to the anime/manga fanbase! So I say full speed ahead!

I'm not doing this out of spite for Zac Effron but I seriously don't think he is suitable for the part of Light Yagami! It's just my opinion, I don't think it would work with him in this. I don't think he's serious enough to be a villain.

Why? Because, one: he just can't pull off a serious role-- take Charlie St. Cloud for example; it was great, but I wasn't fooled, because Mr. Effron isn't convincing at all, and I was starring at him rather than watching the first time through.

My personal opinion is that Chace Crawford should play Light. He can easily be casted as a teenager, and as an adult. However, from what I've heard, his acting is horrid. Which is where Zac might actually be a good choice here. Light is supposed to be the school heartthrob... so in this case, Zac is perfect. I'm just not positive he can be as sinister as Light Yagami.

No offense, but even the Japanese live-action movie angered me by leaving out so many characters and changing the ending. I have no problem with Zac Efron. Not at all. But to be honest, I'd rather there not even be a remake being made. Not a live action version ever developed. Death Note is great as a manga and anime; anything more is overkill.
If this whole thing is going to happen, the script writers had better get their shit together and not completely butcher the whole plot and concept of Death Note, and Zac had better be able to call upon the evil maniac inside himself to pull off the part. If all this can be accomplished then I have no objections. Death Note has an enormous fanbase, so if they f*ck this up they'll have a lot of negative responses, to say the least.
Isn't Light supposed to be a pretty boy that gets all the ladies and seems perfectly innocent? I think Zac could TOTALLY pull that off... now we just have to see if he can also be evil, which is equally important. He's a good actor, so I have faith in him. :D

The Japanese remake was good. Didn't you learn anything after the "dragon ball revolution" and "the last airbander". I hope that you can do a good job, but put a entire manga in only one movie is very difficult. (I hope to not see Miley Cyrus in this film, or any of twilight cast in here).
They did a poor job on Dragon Ball and Avatar: The last Airbender...be a shame if they did the same for Death Note.

Honestly, he could fit the roll. Ignoring his past movies, if he does a good job and doesn't break out into dance, I think it could work. They just better make sure they don't fuck up with L.
While I have my doubts about American remakes in general, if they don't eff this up, this could be a great role for Zac to break out of type. Of course, if he can't pull off all of Light's subtle complexities for this part, it could really be a disaster in the making. XD

there have been some horrible remakes of animes/manga movies in the past, really think it was because those movies werent accessable to a public onlooker. Like the DBZ movie, it wasnt popular because there were simply alot of people that werent interested in that kind of thing. Now, Deathnote has a completly different plot from your steriotypical manag, its a detective/crrime/psyce thriller, which alot of americans and movie-goers like.

the reason you're hearing tons of fans being pissed off is a good reason. If America's gonna remake this, the production needs to be right on with everything. I'll be mad if they screw this one up as bad as they have with others. How hard is it to make a series of movies based on a manga? Star Wars had no budget and look at it's success. Death Note already has a following. @OmegaCalibur It's been a while since I've watched half of either movie (can't be bothered to finish them) but last time I checked the only thing it was faithful to is one or two chapters then it goes to hell. Having redone the whole L dies bring in near and mello to kill them both off.
True, they did remove Mello and Near. but to be honest I didn't consider that a bad thing. Near was a terrible replacement for L. regardless, the end was more faithful to the manga than the anime was. Because in the manga, Light asks Ryuk to kill them and he kills Light instead. while in the anime, it is not faithful to the manga.

Okay, some may think Zac would be perfect playing Light: he wouldn't.
Why? Because, one: he just can't pull off a serious role-- take Charlie St. Cloud for example; it was great, but I wasn't fooled, because Mr. Effron isn't convincing at all, and I was starring at him rather than watching the first time through.
Second: He doesn't look that much like Yagami Light. It's the hair. Duh.

My personal opinion is that Chace Crawford should play Light. He can easily be casted as a teenager, and as an adult. However, from what I've heard, his acting is horrid. Which is where Zac might actually be a good choice here. Light is supposed to be the school heartthrob... so in this case, Zac is perfect. I'm just not positive he can be as sinister as Light Yagami.

If this whole thing is going to happen, the script writers had better get their shit together and not completely butcher the whole plot and concept of Death Note, and Zac had better be able to call upon the evil maniac inside himself to pull off the part. The Japanese remake was good. Didn't you learn anything after the "dragon ball revolution" and "the last airbander". I hope that you can do a good job, but put a entire manga in only one movie is very difficult. (I hope to not see Miley Cyrus in this film, or any of twilight cast in here).

They did a poor job on Dragon Ball and Avatar: The last Airbender...be a shame if they did the same for Death Note.
I mean even the Japanese live action movie on it was not as great as i was expecting it to be. I rather them do a separate movie that incorporates the death note elements (referencing them) but has nothing to do with the anime, because it simply can't compete with the anime.
There are reasons as to why people generally prefer a book or anime over a live action version of it.

there have been some horrible remakes of animes/manga movies in the past, really think it was because those movies werent accessable to a public onlooker. Like the DBZ movie, it wasnt popular because there were simply alot of people that werent interested in that kind of thing. Now, Deathnote has a completly different plot from your steriotypical manag, its a detective/crrime/psyce thriller, which alot of americans and movie-goers like.

Fucking Hollywood needs to back off and let the Japanese do their own thing. I feel like screaming and writing Zac Efrons name in my copy of a Death Note (I don't really have one DX). I'm pretty sure he can't even pull of the evil laugh from the last episode.

I dunt see y people dont like the idea of zac efron being Light Yagami just cuz he was in some HSM movies.
Personally, I think he would be a great actor for him after watching 17 again and Charlie St. Cloud.
That, and I found out that he likes the Death Note series

@IamE4Empathy its bcoz most of dn fans are preferred the original ones..coz when japanese movie or anime remake it in english it sucks..and i think japanese actor and nihonggo really fits in that movie en they act way better..i dunno but there's really in japanese that u can't see in american movie..sorry 4 my bad english

im actually excited to see this, its an excuse to talk to my friends who are totally oblivious to everything anime :) and i think sac is gonna do a good job, yea it will be hard to see anything but troy, but zac is actually a really good actor and im excited to see if he can pull it off. we'll see, it could be a success or a totaly failure that we are atill laughing at 5 years later

the reason you're hearing tons of fans being pissed off is a good reason. The guy isn't a good actor & his movie choice is poor, couldn't they at least get someone with a bit more experience, i'll still watch it. because you may never know if it will turn out good, but i HIGHLY doubt it, probably should have just stayed with the japanese films :/ ..... Just Saying.

I don't mind an Americanized Death Note. I don't mind Zac Efron. But if it's by the same dickweeds that made those half-assed "horror" movies like the Grudge and Shutter, then everyone should petition this shit. Hell, at least let DECENT movie industry to do this!

I didn't really watch any HSM. I think Zac looks almost identical to Light...
and if he is a good enough actor I think he would make a good Light.
The thing that could ruin that movie is if they mess up the story...
I'll be angry if they mess it up.
What really matters besides the story line is WHO PLAYS L!

If America's gonna remake this, the production needs to be right on with everything. I'll be mad if they screw this one up as bad as they have with others. How hard is it to make a series of movies based on a manga? Star Wars had no budget and look at it's success. Death Note already has a following. It should be easy to appease fans, especially if they cast right and follow the manga. >.< Stupid Hollywood producers. Just do it right.

If they make it to appease fans then they leave out the people who have no idea what the hell it is which is the majority. Sad but true so expect a shitbomb. Eh if he can do it awesome. Very doubtful though. There is very little hope for a DN movie to not be horrible. Even the japs fucked up on the original.

@OmegaCalibur It's been a while since I've watched half of either movie (can't be bothered to finish them) but last time I checked the only thing it was faithful to is one or two chapters then it goes to hell. Having redone the whole L dies bring in near and mello to kill them both off.
Hell the whole second act is gone.

True, they did remove Mello and Near. but to be honest I didn't consider that a bad thing. Near was a terrible replacement for L. regardless, the end was more faithful to the manga than the anime was. Because in the manga, Light asks Ryuk to kill them and he kills Light instead. while in the anime, it is not faithful to the manga.
