Bobby is a living legend, and he deserves so much more respect, (although his loyal fans, myself included, love him dearly) and it's nice to know that he is still with us. I can't believe though, that Sonny started working for Bill Monroe when he was 14!
@Zepster77 Bobby is a living legend. He is an amazing artist, and he started a revolution in bluegrass, with Sonny, and as well by himself. If it weren't for the Osborne's, we would have "Big Spike Hammer, "Rocky Top" "Hard Times", "Tennessee Hound Dog", and many, many others. He deserves so much more.
Have always thought Bobby's hats were sharp. I was wondering if anyone knows where one could be bought? Do they have a special name or do they have to be custom made?
I love this video of Bobby and his band. The guys look and sound terrific. It's hard to beat this old song "Rocky Top" for getting you up out of your chair and seeing if you can keep up with it. These musicians are talented - I am always careful to not compare every musician with either J.D. Crowe or Earl Scruggs. J.D. and Earl have had eons to hone their crafts. I have always loved to see Bobby and brother Sonny together and wish they were together here. Thanks for this fun video.- Paula
I went to see them once. Apparently the banjo player (who I met) has a thing about playing insanly fast. He came into Foggy Mountain Breakdown so fast he just couldn't handle it, he was screwing up all over. And its not like he didn't know the arrangment he was gonna play because I recognized it as being almost exactly like Earl's first version for Mercury records.
But hes a great player though, he just needs to slow down.
this is kind of a half assed version....the mandolin player isnt hitting the high notes....and this is supposed to be a happy lively song...no one is smiling!
i kind of agree, the musicianship fantastic, but it has energy, like they want to rush through and get it done, but in fairness very clean very professional. jimmy
It always bugs me when people criticise an artist.....we all have our favourites.....I love Lloyd Green's playing but some prefer Buddy Emmons/Weldon Myrick, etc, etc. Unless the sound is out of tune or absolutely terrible, why can't folks just acceptthat its DIFFERENT! Got that off my chest. Peace to all. :-)
i agree with you guys, some of you dont know the meaning of music or know what good music was even if it nailed you in the face. you guys have no clue what your viewing
Bobby Osborne practically wrote the book on the new harmony structure on Bluegrass. He is a rare individual, in that he himself was a TREMENDOUS influence on every female Country and Bluegrass vocalist from Linda Ronstadt right up to Cherryholmes, today! Monroe may have 'baked the cake'--but Bobby put the icing on it!
The osbornes did use different vocal structure, if I understood correctly, with the typical style they would have to adjust everytime they got a new lead vocalist or something, but by making Bobby's higher voice in the lead, it never changed.
I LOVE the old structure too! I was just clarifying what the major influence of Bobby Osborne was to the bluegrass industry--since there are several readers below who obviously don't have a clue of what they're viewing!
I was at a local concert with various arists a few weekends ago, Bobby was there, his banjo player Dana Cupp is an awesome banjo player and a nice guy, I got to met him and he just left me alone with his Osborne Cheif banjo, fine banjo! LOL.
It's too bad you think that way. You must not have much respect for bluegrass music. I thought it was a pretty good performance, except that it was too fast and some of the players could hardly keep up.
since forming the rocky top express I haven't liked the way he does this song now.....too damn fast it seems for the people playing it, they're having trouble keeping up and the vocal lines on the chorus have been shortened

What no one has said, is that this guy can flat out SING and that's a thing to be appreciated and cherished. They don't make 'em like that anymore.
