That's one thing Heinlein got right but the movie totally failed at - in the book, the MI are extremely well trained elite soldiers wearing battle armour and armament comparable to a medium sized battle cruiser. Did I mention it could fly short distances? That each soldier carried a few mini-nukes, just in case? Somehow, it made the whole setup much more believable. Not to mention epic whenever a bug actually managed to kill a couple of them.

I hate the movie, for one large reason-the plot was improbable and the tactics used by the soldiers highly idiotic. WWI tactics when they have highly advanced weaponry? And why is it that sometimes a bug takes 5 shots to kill and other times ten guys shooting at one won't do the job? The movie was pretty groundbreaking, but still, why the idiocy?

This movie shows the atrocities of (human vs human) war really well. In fact that was the author of starship trooper's original purpose. To convince people that war = bad and you shouldn't just go around starting them.

That novel was nothing like this movie and was not antiwar at all.

It was (more-or-less) a social commentary on how civil service is good, individualism is cool, meritocracy is awesome, and that communism doesn't work (for humans).
