  • How hot, or what setting, should that iron be to seal the Mylar without melting it? Brilliant work, by the way!

  • FOCKIN GINIE... MARICON

  • I have a Euro Sealer (10” corded). It seals plastic in seconds, much easier than the iron. Too bad I can’t find it anywhere these days (so others can get one) but you can also use an Impulse Cellophane Bag Sealer. Better quality but very costly ($75+ for a decent one). But if anyone is going to seal a lot of bags or has limited mobility, might be worth the investment, or to reduce cost, buy one and share with neighbors who chip in. Just wish we didn’t have to use any plastic to store food.

  • I`m looking @ your bucket, guessing light does not shine through,is this true?

Where did you get that grey bucket? Oh and good going with the vac!

  • Great technique. I wonder how longbrown rice, dehydrating broccoli, dehydrated meat or butter would last.

Not to poo poo. But I wont be saving something so poisonous as bisquick. People really need to research this. Wheat is toxic. If you are using Whole wheat, it's not so bad. But I don't store any wheat product, nor corn. Corn fattens up cows, hogs and people. Along with that is other diseases, making one generally less resilient & a burden. Diabetes comes from these things & sugars

  • How much do those mylar bags cost?

  • Because when the sh*t hits the fan, YOU GOTS TO HAVES YOURS BISQUICKS!! hahaha!

  • see now how did that make you feel? did you pass?

  • no its cause i think your dumb dummy!

  • we are all made from the lord when people insult you it is to get you to belive you are junk and cut you off from his love as they are cut off. pray that they return to him. its just a test of your belief in yourself being his child.

  • bisquick is good because it has the oil and eggs and baking powder in it. just add boiled ditch water and cook it in a tin can over dank burt wood. i glad your all so eagerly looking forward to those nasty government people getting theirs when the s hit the f cause im pretty sure thell be underground sipping champaigne and eating caviar as usual. maybe the cholesterrol will get them oh yea THEY have health care!

  • Crude and very effective, my kind of guy McGuyver it..

    Thanks

  • Thanks for the video good idea with the vacume.Im no survivalist buy any streach of the tearm but i do think its a good idea to have some emergency back up food. And i also like having something to take to hunting or camping that i can just grab and go.

  • its also possible that your preserved foods get a rusty taste over time...

  • @THE2012FAILURE its possible that you could but people that have been doing this for years have never had the problem

  • Thanks, your tips are great

  • your smart to figure this..thanks for sharing.got a food sealer, but not for the bulk items, excellent idea re: the buckets too.I live in a tsunami area that has already been hit once.I have to move all my shtf kits every time the tsunami warning goes off. I like your bucket idea with handles. presently use rectangle totes, but the lids can easily pop off before you get out the door, thanks man, i will revise my plan.oh and I vacuum seal clothing as well in case we get another tsunami ie. dry socks

  • Bro, don't let all the negative nellies get you down. Just keep on sharing your knowledge of long term storage. I am trying to convince some neighbors and relatives to begin to store food and water, and also to make provisions for the disposal of human waste. Check out Humanure online for a practical method of turning human waste into soil by composting. For buckets, I use bucket lids that screw on. The other type are destroyed once they have been removed a time or two. Keep up the good work.

  • I learned something today. Thanks!

  • what is is always preparing for? 2012?

  • Awesome! Thanks for the info..was wondering how that worked! :)

  • If you go to your local grocery store you can get the food grade buckets with tops for free. Just ask the bakery department if they have any they plan on throwing out, usually its a frosting bucket, may not be the circular kind but just as effective at keeping things out.

  • Very instructive. Thanks!

  • what a clever idea! i use one of those food savers but it wouldn't be able to seal a bag that wide...btw did you know the potato chip bags like ruffles are mylar? i use them just like the food saver bags and they are essentially free after we finish a bag o chips :)

  • Do these "hot hands" warmers need to run out of their heating energy before putting them in a bag of perishable goods?

When do they work best in absorbing both oxygen & humidity?

    Thanks!

  • Very well done!!!

  • things would be fine if your place wasnt so dirty, you introduce bacteria using this method, that vaccuum cleaner was disgusting

  • @shawnio bacteria would need air, if there isnt air, its hard to have a large amount of bacteria.

  • Do you activate the hand warmers before dropping them in the bag? and is there a specific brand that should be used or will any brand do?

  • You my good sir are not a screw-up. Thanks for every bit of your time!

  • fantastic tip!!!!!!!!

  • I just wanted to thank you for all of your video's, Dsarti1. I've watched a few of them and learned some valuable info.

  • your work environment and tools appear very steril for food preperation.

  • @quicklady your damn right they are... this is the best way to do it with what you have around... he is showing that you don't need to go buy shit to do the same thing with a sealer

  • @quicklady Ya know what is interesting about life is that all life requires oxygen to live so without any of it anything left in that mix would be dead.

  • This guy should be required viewing for all you "know-everything, earn-loads, pompous, city arseholes. This guy is the real deal and make no mistake!

  • Thanks so much for the information. I find your way of doing this quite nice. Ignore the morons, that think they know best. They can always put their own video on here. It worked great.

  • @systemaddictshock on the Capri Sun pouch: Nice idea, I've got two kids and a bag full of pouches I was going to send. But, now I think I'll use them. GREAT THINKING! :0)

  • The coolest thing about this video is that it's not just a lesson in clever food-saving technique. It demonstrates improvisation, effective problem-solving, and the importance of understanding process. A skill set like this is an asset in good times or bad.

Thanks for a really neat trick.

  • or even a curling iron!

  • I bet instead of everyone using a clothes iron, a hair straightener that girls use would work just as well and be a hole lot easier because you don't have to have a table or a mat or anything else to set it on to iron it closed.

  • Hi, Can you tell me what kind of vacuum cleaner that was that you used, man talk about a power house, I couldn't believe how fast it sucked it up! Great video!!

  • Hey I recently made a minor discover....Capri Sun juice pouches. These puppies are small mylar bags and can be reused to store small items like seed or dry herbs.

  • Good video! Thanks for the tip on the hand warmers too!

  • Redneck vacuum sealer. :)

Do you own a store bought vacuum sealer?

I bought the Rival brand from wally world for 50 bucks and it does a good job.

I tested it with a vacuum gauge and it draws a 22-23 inches of vacuum on the bags before it seals them which is pretty good.

Include a small oxygen absorber in that vacuum and there wont be any oxygen left in there.

Place those bags in a vacuum sealed Mylar bag with an oxygen absorber in it then store in 5 gallon buckets.

  • @originaLkomatoast

This guy is resourceful and creative, two qualities that everyone should posses.

He demonstrates how to be resourceful, creative and self reliant.

The world would be a better place if everyone were so.

If you learn anything at all from these videos you should learn these three things.

  • I have only one thing to say about this.... 3:52 :)

  • I have learned so much from you. Thank you So much for your time and dedication to helping the rest of us get prepared. I love all your Videos. Keep up the awsome work and God Bless and much respect from Oregon!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I just tried it your way with a bucket head shop vac and your method works like champ. Thanks.

  • dasarti1,.vacuum the floor as well!! good video though!

  • what if you put the hand warmer in a half opened ziplock bag so that it doesnt contact the food. You can place it in the bag properly then seal?

  • I love your videos, you seem to know how to prep on a penny. Could you post up some info on different methods of food preservation and the shelf life you can achieve for the different foods. Thanks

  • Most foods in shops last well beyond there use by date, and the human body can handle a lot of food we throw away, for example, molded bread can be eaten if the mold is scrapped off and toasted. When the time comes you won't be choose about what you eat.

I personally am going to wrap my stuff up in three layers of tin foil and ten normal plastic bags and then Vacuum out the air and seal, if the stuff goes bad, I will get ride of the bad and eat the good, I will not be fussy.

    Good video.

  • Thank you. Enjoyed your video; it's very clever.

  • you sound like Granpa Walton

  • you don't need more food for rest of you life fat ass

  • for some reason i believe this man know his shit when it comes to food.

  • seems like rodents can chew through a plastic buket - no? prolly why the mormons like the #10 steel cans. (wax or paint them to prevent rust) i use mylar bags in galvanized steel trash cans with lid fits 100+ pounds each - comments?

I like your videos. Keep doing what you are doing for as long as you can :-)

  • wow this is awesome stuff i happen to work at a napa auto parts where we have these 5 gallon buckets as well as hot hands for sale ill have to do some shopping :)

  • SOG Flash II?

  • Hey buddy ,,thanks for all the good info..i spent the day putting up kidney beans using your methods..i love all your videos...i hope to put up a years worth of food using your methods..

  • buisquuick will last for 20 years if packed well the only problem is the potency of the baking powder will be lost after a year of storage this is no problem as you can re add baking powder when you re open your container !

  • Great video. I'm not spending $200 on a vacuum sealer.

  • @Stella76Luna Well I spent way more than $200.00 on a vacuum packer way back in 1999 the Y2K time. The best investment I have ever made in my kitchen. It is not only way better way to pack food for buckets but we use it every day and save about $150.00 a month on not wasting foods. This method may be good for huge bulk that may or may not be good in 20 years. Being realistic about food storage it is a rotation basis, a daily life plan of foods you eat all the time. Invest in the Vacupack

  • To all those who want to talk shit about the mans weight he suffered a back injury and has some mobility problems as he mentioned in his health update video let's see where some of you will be if the same happens to you, at least he hasn't let that stop him from prepping and a productive lifestyle

  • thanks

  • I've seen a lot of videos on this and I really like the way he explains it and his method. Awesome.

  • Thanks for the info. Where in the hades did you get bulk Bisquick?

The hand warmer thing is genius stuff.

Most people are too lazy or stupid to be prepared. What part of the country do you live in?

  • Where do you get the 5 gal mylar bags from? How much do they cost?

    Thanks

  • @clintsmith96 I get my mylar bags and oxy absorbers here at Sorbent Systems. Just add .com. Great site!

  • Where do we get the bags?

  • very nice!

  • Question - what about the bags that chips come in, they are silvered on the inside, can these be used as mylar bags to store food if they are cleaned out. I am looking for ways to save money and reuse items.

  • Awesome video - great idea on the hand warmers, I am going to try myself. Keep the great videos coming.

  • I just used this method for seven 25 pound bags of pintos, works great. I didn't use buckets thought, I just laid the mylar bags and each bags of pintos out flat, cut a slit in the top of each bag of pintos, stuck an oxygen absorber in each bag, and tapped each one back shut. Then I slid each bag of pintos into a mylar bag removing the tape tape along the way, and sucked and sealed each one. My only concern is, will the plastic designate over time inside the mylar? I don't think so.

  • omfg go look in a fucking mirror

  • @with33 you are such an asshole....ya know when shit goes down this FAT ASS will be ready and you will be one of the sheep beggin for that bit of bisquick he wiped on his knee....I say fat ass cuz imma fat ass too, and there is one thing about us fat asses...when food runs out we will be the ones left....so take you and your comment and kill yourself...there is no use for you on this world...piece of shit.....have a nice day

  • @TheBigsteve2010 lol no when food runs out youll be the first to die this guy cant store the foo he eats in a month he will eat away all his suplies by the time outhers start needing them cause hes such a fatass

and i am prepared for anything so go eat some more cupcakes fatty

  • @with33 yet another keyboard cowboy, and if said i was a navy seal and jumped outta 10 airplane you would have jumped outta 11....whatever kid go troll somewhere else

  • @TheBigsteve2010 When the food run out, there will be cannibalism. Being a fat ass is no remedy to food shortage.

  • @TheBigsteve2010 unless there are canibals.

  • @TheBigsteve2010 Why do ridicule this man, he is giving us a service. Teaching us uselful things, you on the other hand are flou mouthed and have little usefulness to any of us.

  • @abbscobutsna wtf are you talking about? Im not talking about Dsarti Im talking about the retard that commented notice the @with33 at the beginning of my post?

  • @TheBigsteve2010 So what fat ass were you talking about??? Foul mouth!

  • @abbscobutsna i think u are in desperate need of more schooling....just drop it...imma foul mouthed asshole and you are a self-righteous prick that cant understand what he/she/it reads

  • @with33 Lets see your vids !!!! The guy take the time to help people and you just come here to bitch. Get a life and stop acting like a school yard bully .

  • excellent methods and thanks for showing us..greatly appreciated.

  • Where do you get the buckets and the lids from?

  • omfg its jaba the hutt =O

  • @benpie12 You are a jerk i hope you find a long walk off a short pier. Loser

  • @benpie12 HA HA...yet another asshole that is more concerned with how a person looks than what they have to offer...this man offers knowledge to the masses, and dickheads like you will be suckin on the goverment tit should something bad happen, in the FEMA camps...take your Fagget ass Lady GaGa loving self and die...piece of shit

  • is there any difference in mylar types?

I've seen so called "FDA approved" or "food grade" commercial mylar bags that appeared to be coated with a few layers of plastic.

Are there any differences between those pre-made bags and a roll of say 2 mm mylar from a 25' by 48" roll or whatever?

  • Great video

Where did you get the buckets and lids??

    How much do they cost?

Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.

  • Not only was this a great video, but those are the greatest shoes known to man...

    :-p

  • Are the hand warmers food safe. I know that when I went to order oxygen absorbers I was asked if I wanted food grade or not.

  • Thanks for the video David. I have a couple of buckets and lids. Will get some bags and hand warmers or o2 absorbers and try this method soon. God bless. This may help many people in the future.

  • A very big thanks for your insights and hard work on all your videos. I have learned much from you and others as I try to prepare for this uncertain time. I to try to do this on a budget and I am just trying to absorb all the info that I can. A couple of questions: What heat setting do you use on the iron to seal the mylar and is the clay in the hand warmers also? I hope to God that we never have to be in the situation where we have to use our storage, but if so you could be saving many.

  • Clever! I love simplicity. I've been wasting time pondering the price of fancy sealers. You have surely helped a lot of us preppers. I get a kick out of the naysayers. Let them eat their Excel spreadsheets when the SHTF. Like the song says, 'A country boy can survive'. And the naysayers can bet their Birkenstocks on that! Thank you Dave.

  • how did you learn about using hand warmers for oxygen absorbers

  • @polarbeach courosity... I wanted to know what made them work and did a little research and grade school chemistry

  • @dsarti1 and they sucked the O2 right out of my mylar bags of brown rice. kudos!

  • Interesting way of storing food. I commend you for teaching people how to have a bit of food on hand in case of emergency. However your information that the bisquick will last 20 years is absolutely not true! There are some foods that do last upwards of 20 years mostly beans, but most are best used with in 1-2 years packed in the fashion you have shown. Professional Vacuum Packers do draw and seal far better than you are understanding this method. Rotation is key, not hording!

  • @Taylegirl Did I say the bisquick would last 20 years??? I thought I mentioned proper packing the bisquick would extend its life a few years

  • @dsarti1 delta69 did this and his buicquick lasted for over 17 years good stuff dsarti thanks for sharing your info

  • @dsarti1 Yeah you did! At 3:45 into the video you say, " that stuff's good for twenty years right there!

Maybe it is? You packed it great! Great method. Vacuum cleaner was really cool.

    Iguana One out...

  • @Taylegirl you know nothing about food storage your a consumer and a failure at survival

  • @rolficus Your rude and obviously uneducated to make such a rude comment and conclusion about a comment that was complimentary to the video producer. To help educate you MYLAR is a medium barrier bag with a shelf life not past 2 years. There are many other metalized bags that have much higher ratings for long term storage. The Mormons made Mylar popular but they rotate so it works for them.

  • @cedarfishify sorry for my rudeness but dont go by use by dates with plastics- mormans rotate becouse it is effecient to do so but you can use them for much longer with no problems same with canned food just dont leave them in a warm humid place keep your longterm food stores cool and dry and out of the sun i love this guys videos he is very informative and easy going .

  • @rolficus True mylar is a trade name for a polyester bag, it is a low to medium air barrier bag. It longest shelf life is 2 years. These people who think they are going to seal up foods and in 20 years in a 2 year maximum shelf mylar bag are in for a rude awakening. There are bags out there that are metalized very high barrier that will last 10 plus years. But must people trying this method are to cheap to buy these are are looking for the least expensive bags, thus the lowest air barrier.

  • @cedarfishify the 2 year expiry date on mylar is for the air seal and not for the deteriation of the bag which wont biodegrade for at least 500 years anyway if you seal the bag well and even tape the seems in order to beat the 2 yr recomendation you will be fine another thing is the bucket if you store in a bucket and dont move your goods around you wont break the seal most food companies say 2 years so u can rotate and make them more money also air seal your bucket as a double barrier

  • @cedarfishify does the polyester or aluminum layer make a barrier for air penetration? how could air penetrate aluminum? does the manufacturer claim 2 years max? if so, cans with sealable lids are better imho.

  • It's best if you only seal an amount that your going to eat at one time or over a few days.

  • @1thatisilluminated Only with Stuff like powdered milk, whole grains and beans and stuff like that can last a year or two with out being in a mylar bag with absorbers.. Have no fear I know exactly what I am doing.

  • @1thatisilluminated i disagree ... if you had 20 of these buckets sealed for example you could open 1 a year for 20 years and eat out of it for the entire year when it's opened ... just put the lid back on.

  • Thank God for Rednecks!

  • Great video!! How long would nonfat dry milk be good for if packed in the same method?

  • Comment removed

  • Where do you get mylar bags? Excellent tip about hand warmers. Thanks for all your info, God bless!

  • google usa emergency supply

  • eBay is the cheapest place to get them even with shipping.

  • i got my mylar bags off 'ebay' (they also come with O2 absorbers)

i'm going to try this method with the vacuum, i just hope i dont get a vacuum cleaner full of rice...LOL

  • Hey - We enjoy your videos!

Wanted to let you know we get our FOOD GRADE buckets FREE from the grocery store in the bakery department. They usually have several different sizes with the lids....can't beat FREE. They are happy to give them away. They use them for icing for cakes and donuts. I just give them a wash with some bleach when I get home and they work great. We have also found the local Dairy Queen will give FOOD GRADE buckets away that they use for their strawberries for sundaes.

  • Nice job man. Note to all those who laugh at us storing food. We live in a Just in Time (JIT) system. Just wait...when things mess up....you will wish you had some stuff stored for your family. Here's your test. Go without food for 3 days...you turn into a "Zombie". Hence the term. Get with it so we don't have to feed your sorry ass. Nice jobdsrti1. You are a true Patriot. Thanks for educating the common man. Avg. folks are getting ready. It's all the Professional fucks I work w not!

  • What mil bags are those Dave? I have a supply of 7mil bags.

  • i think they were 5mil where did you find 7mil bags?

  • The LDS website. They are 1 gallon 7 mil bags listed as "Dry-Pack Pouches. Foil pouches, case of 250".

At 94.00 per bundle it's a good deal for sure. (Item number: 81381000)

Search "Item number: 81381000" for the quickest route to the link.

    Good hunting!

  • David, Thanks for doing so many videos for the frugally-minded prepper. I really appreciate your ideas. I feel like I learn something new (and that I can use!) every time I check your channel. (And I must say, I was so expecting that vacuum to suck up most of your bisquik mix!). I've never used the Mylar bags / O2 absorbers, but I may try it out because you made it look a lot easier than other videos I've seen.

  • Why you know if a old country bumkin can do it. It has to be easy

  • ☆☆☆☆☆

  • Nice trick with the hot hand packet, but won't they get hot? And also where do you get the Mylar bags?

  • oxygen absorberes get warm too thet do not get that hot and once all oxygen is gone they stop heating...I get the bags from USA Emergency Supply

  • so your buckets will only get to be 36 months old? is that correct? i suck at math. so that's 3 years old? not bad for a powdered food only designed to last 6 months.

  • Once packed properly nearly all dry foods will last a decade or more so there is no problem rotating a 3 yr old product, Take a tomato, put it on the shelf and your luck if it lasts 2 weeks, but freeze dry it and pack it in a container that is light proof and no oxygen and it will last 20+ years

  • Please put a hand warmer in a bucket without vacuuming it. If your hand warmer is REALLY acting as a oxygen absorber then it will pull vacuum on its own...i saw it on u tube..:) please try it. It is very impressive looking and will shut us who don't believe in the hand warmer up!

  • Good video David . I use a food saver my self /5/

  • David, You made that looks very easy and i know it was! I'm a big fan of bisquick because you can make EVERYTHING from it! Anyone who stores it and find that they ever really need it will thank themselves 1000 times a day dont you agree? 5 stars!!!

  • yep my goal is to have 6 buckets of that in storage I have been putting away a bucket every 6 mo so when I get to bucket 7 I wll start using the bucket from jan 2009 and continue rotating a bucket every 6 mo

  • Good stuff!! You're kinda like a redneck version of Rube Goldberg!! I've enjoyed all your videos!

  • guys if you do this just make sure not to suck up a few pounds of bisquick right in the vacum there lol.

  • never been a problem

  • thats good to know

  • good video! that is the first time ive ever heard of useing hand warmers as oxygen absorbers. thanks for the info!

  • just make sure it is not the chemical hand warmers

  • on youtube, i seen thick plastic buckets being chewed thru by rats. Dont forget to secure your storage against them, and check it regularly.

  • I dont use a vacuum, since oxy abs dont do a good job over time. Nitrogen still rules.

  • Nitrogen? How does one use nitrogen to prolong the life shelf of your grains and flours?

  • really all studys point to the oppisit after nitrogen purg there was still risidual oxygen... as long as seal is not comprimized o2 absorbers rule

  • Where did you get the bags at?

  • I posted above where I get mine @. Dave also posted above where he gets his at.

    Good luck!

  • What if you don't like Bisquick? :(

    hehe

  • good vid the only thing i am wondering is about the heat from the handwarms dose it affect the mailar or dose the sealed bag cause it to stop heating up once all the air is used up in the bag

  • the hand warmer is exactly the same as any other oxygen absorber see my video on oxygen absorbers

  • i did the heaty issue was the only thing that i kept pondering over

  • what carpit? that is old partical board the tile came up years ago... You should really put your brain in gear before placing your mouth in drive.

PS there is a dirt dog robot that sweeps the floor every other day. you sound like one of those up class people and would not have ever seen a mud room any how

  • @dsarti1 Sorry .Yer right. I apologize. It does look like particle board now that you mention it. I just subbed and enjoy your vids. I should have kept my thoughts to myself. I'm not uppity, but I've not seen bare particle board on a floor either. Apparently, I've lived a sheltered life. Thanks for the food storage video. My sincerest apoligies, sir.

  • Thank you for the info. Great idea!

  • ★★★★★

  • Simply awesome method!!!! Thanks so much.

    ★★★★★★★★★★

  • Great video

Bisquick would have a million uses for meal ideas.

The vacuum seemed to work well too, but you just have to be careful you don't suck up the bisquick. lol

  • Thank you for sharing this method of storing food with us. Best of luck to you.

  • Great video thanks
