Great old time video of the 20's well known Abe Lyman Band. The violinist standing up on the left is Richard Winfree (1898-1975), best known as the co-author of the song "China Boy" made famous by the Benny Goodman Band. He is my Grand Uncle, so this video had special meaning to me.
The drummer is the leader, Abe Lyman himself. He had one heck of a band!
Always great to see the amazing Orlando "Slim" Martin on trombone.
Better versions? "12th Street" is a great rag even just played as written. Hard to top the Louis Armstrong Hot 7 version though; Louis's variations are still mind blowing.
i wished i lived in those times and was part of the entertainment circle. man that must of been IT. wish i could of known Chaplin and hang out in clubs, where bands like this played. awesome.
Like so many films on YouTube this clip was stolen from the Dalymotion Group "Classic Jazz Club" a fantastic collection of over 150 pre-war jazzclips digitalised from original 16mm films. These films can be found on the Dailymotion website and all end with Oliver Hardy saying "That's all there is, there isn't anymore". It is therefore easy to spot when they are stolen - as in this case.
This happy atmosphere reminds me of the "Firehouse 5+2". *****
