I once saw two small boys fight. One boy simply knew to kick out the legs of the other boy.Watching this video was pretty much the same thing except the boys were actually fighting.
Everyone is born with basic knowledge of how to trip someone over, just like everyone is born with basic knowledge of how to punch someone in the head.
If an amateur tries to punch a Boxer in the head they will lose, just like if an amateur tries to take down a Judoka they will lose.
Tradional ashi waza is timed and gentle. The foot should strike the mat like a match, low straight and in line. Ashi-waza is a "trip to control" the opponent. Like the heza garuma by the book the leg being stopped should move two inches then stop with the foot. If the heza fails hit the double foot sweep. Thats trip to control. It takes 10,000 throws and 3 lifetimes to perfect foot technique.
