  • While I am not usually a fan of songs being redone, I am a HUGE Grobanite and I actually like Josh's version of this song better than the original. It was a song that needed to be sung at a slower pace and just the emotion he puts into it makes it even better! I saw him perform this song in person last year and I was in tears by the time he was done! Love it and Love him!

  • @lauriedee1969 aww,i totally agree with you,i am also a huge Grobanite and i love this version of this song, both versions are great, special, but Josh in general is my faovrite singer ever, btw where have you seen him perfroming this song?)nice to meet you,Grobie hugs:)

  • well done although I dont like the guitar on it, its missing the signature hammer ons that made it so beautiful to me when I first heard the original. Still, what a voice!

  • @DragonReborn886 thank you for your comment:)

  • Josh Groban is the best !

  • @thefreedomartist Absolutely~ I'm an artist, and Van Gogh is my idol,,,,,I can't listen to this song without tearing up. It really speaks to me. :)

  • @ninjaart94 oh,mine too,he was one of the biggest artistic soul ever...thank you for lovely comment:)

  • My uncle Bill took his own life, and this song was pretty much his life, no one understanded him like i did, i miss you unc <3

  • @LetsRage718 i am so sorry to hear that:(:it;sso sad when sometimes such a sensitibe, fragile and wonderful people pass away...:(like this,i am really sorry:(

  • Beautiful guitar work, and a lovely voice to complement it.

  • @jamespadfoot7 thank you for the lovely comment

  • Beautiful guitar work, and a lovely voice to complement it.

  • Much beter than the recorded version he did. The musical arrangement was too lush and got in the way of the singing. Here the beautiful, understated guitar playing perfect complements Groban's wonderful voice. Still prefer Don McLean, but this is a great version too.

  • @dnmurphy48 thank you so much for your comment:)

  • one of the best voices i've ever heard..

  • @natz33333 oh,thank you for comment,i definately agree:))

  • The thing nobody ever talks about is how his speaking voice IN NO WAY leads you to think that his singing voice would be like this.

  • @dynelol thank you for your comment:)

  • Each version has a distinct feeling to it. It's hard to pick which is better.

  • its a sad song

  • @animemusa thank you for your comment:)

  • I can't believe I'm almost 31 years old, and a male, yet still reduced to tears by this song. I'm a glutton for punishment. :'D

  • @Gdmn29 aww, thank you for your comment, this song is always touching:)

  • i love his voice! <3 i like his more than don mclean sorry guys!

  • @punroxy2012 ohh,thank you for your comment,lovely!:))

    i agree!:)

  • @Anita8891 i agree and it's pretty objective when it comes to Josh and DM's voice, however DM wrote this masterpiece so theyre pretty even : )

    BEST VERSION EVER!!!

Josh is a virtuoso of song

  • @veelighted7 thank you for your comment and opinion,i really appreciate it:))best version by Josh and Don:)they are both special:)

  • Josh Is Soothing Relaxing Peaceful..From This .. To Illuminations. Listen To "Awake" And "Higher Window".

  • @claycandy53 thank you so much for your comment,i am so glad to read comments like this.

  • i cant get over how his speaking voice and singing voice are completely different

  • @a7xsidewinderx7a thank you for your comment!:)

  • I love all of Josh Groban's music, I really do. I even like this cover. But... it just doesn't have the same feel as the original. It doesn't have quite the same level of emotion.

  • @AmiMecanique it's just difffrent approach to the song, can;t be compared...to me both versions are special, have something unique.thank you for your comment.:)

  • Josh Groban has a beautiful voice, but I think he could have done a better job with this incredibly moving song. Don McLean sings it more soulfully.

  • @gregsl59 thank you for your comment:)

  • @gregsl59 I agree. Josh's concert performance is good, but the CD version was way over-produced. I much prefer Don McLean's version. Beautifully simple and much more moving, at least to me. Love everything else Josh sings. He's voice is absolutely wonderful.

  • @822d thank you for your comment:)

  • My grandpa always played this one, so I do prefer this version. xD

  • @Shashanyaara oh,thank you for lovely comment:)

  • I love this. It is one of my favourites. I like it better than McLean. I also like that he has an operatic voice. And, You Raise Me Up, what can I tell you. Brings shivers to my timbers. Anne Thank you

  • @vodka4everandalways oh,,you are more than welcome,it's such a pleasure ,Josh's music is really incredible,warm greetings

  • This is an AMAZING cover and anyone that knows me will tell you that 95% of the time, I prefer the original. This time there is no preference and they're both great for their own reasons.

  • @dynelol i agree:)thank you for your comment:)

  • @dynelol I actually PREFER this version! I LOVE Don McLean, but Josh has such a magnificent voice, and REALLY does this song justice!! :)

  • @holefan69 I agree, I love his rendition of You Raise Me Up. Anne

  • @dynelol thank you for your comment:)

  • I love it.......

  • @rajanorafzan aww,thank you for your comment:)

  • Josh thought this masterpiece should be re-done? Bull. It didn't have to be. The composer did it perfectly. Josh is a great singer, and if he wanted to record it, fine. No problem. But it DIDN'T HAVE TO BE REDONE.

  • @Loejyrrab he ment that this song is so great that it needed to be sang and reminded once again.:)thank you for your comment.

  • @Anita8891 I see your point.

  • @Loejyrrab thank you :)

  • @Anita8891 OK, you're right.

  • @Loejyrrab :):)

  • Dude way better than the original

  • @TheKatietester thank you for your comment:)

  • Beautiful! However Joanna Wang's version is my favorite!

  • @tubeyou89119 thank you for your comment:)

  • Am I the only one who prefers this version to the original?

  • @BTBHSOHBOY i prefer it too

  • @BTBHSOHBOY nope I do too lol it's not bad but you can't beat the original

  • Obviously a fantastic voice, and he can give you a perfect rendition of probably just about anything.

Not this though, this song has soul, sadness and a deep level of emotion that a perfect rendition will not capture.

  • @AngelsHaveDemons thank you for your amazing comment:)this song really has a soul..i agree:)

  • Love Josh. However, this is the only song that I thought the original version was better. The stage performance and most particularly the CD rendition, in my opinion, was way over-produced. Don Mclean's version was beautifully simple and much more moving to me.

Love Josh Groban in every other song. I had one of his songs dedicated from me to myl mother at her funeral. Miss her sitll everyday.

  • @822d thank you for lovely comment.

  • @Anita8891 Many thanks for your kind words. That meant very much to me. Thank you also for Josh's postings.

  • @822d aw,you are more than welcomed, your words also mean so much to me:)warm greetings

  • Two extraordinary artists. Really beautiful. What a treat.

  • @aelaniaiu thank you so much for your comment:)

  • My wife and I were at this very concert and heard this performance live in the spring of 2002!! This was a concert by the Boston Pops Orchestra ("Williams Plays Williams" --- one half of the concert was John Williams conducting the Pops in performing his own major movie compositions). Christopher Parkening (the great guitarist), Josh Groban, and Lara Fabian also performed. It was a truly special moment that I recall frequently!! So glad to see this clip on Youtube.

  • @spockc1 aww,i am so glad to hear from you:)it has been already almost 10 years since that concert....it's amazing how time passes.this concert must have been amazing:)i am happy to hear from you, warm greetings,Anita

  • how you put artist name down the video?

  • @k0it123 oh,you can put it during creating a video:)

  • Hello and Huh my loveley Friend..:-)...many warm grobie Hugs to you from me....with this amazing Song, the Sun is raising up in my Heart..:-)....Josh...what a Voice,Men,...and and and...;-)

  • @Ursel45 :):)oh,hello dear,thank you so much for your comment here,i missed you,how are you?:):)have a lovely Grobie day,hugs:)

  • LOVE IT! LOVE IT! LOVE YOU.

  • @mammamiaM100 thank you for your comment:)

  • Truly beautiful voice, but unlike Don McLean, he just sings a beautiful song. McLean sings directly to Vincent.

  • @TheBogey66 thank you so much for your comment:)

  • @TheBogey66 As much as I like Josh's voice, I have to agree. McLean sings to the tragic artist in a most direct and impacting manner. Josh merely sings sweetly and I get little emotional impact. I also loved the superb guitar work.

  • @VisionProductionsNZ thank you for your opinion:)

  • I personally would like to see this song covered by shirley bassey...

  • @RICKandNATE thanks for comment

  • perfection at it's best!!!! song and artist...

  • @cynbil20011 oh,thank you,i agree:)

  • I looked up the life story of Vincent and I have NEVER heard another song so beautifully portray another's life. He was a tortured soul who finally took his own life after losing at love for another. Don M. is a musical genius for his composition and Josh G. is a master sending the final message to us all. I am brought to tears everytime I hear it. Thanks.

  • @MrFleshyheadedmutant you are more than welcomed,i am so glad you liked it:)

  • @MrFleshyheadedmutant thank you so much:)

  • He has a strong voice, but this was simply too sterile. He fit the song to his voice and should have done the opposite.

  • @edwdixon5 thank you for your comment

  • I have this painting hanging in my room...soo glad to have found this song =]

  • What amazing talent! ... I am trying to promote another yet undiscovered artist with a really amazing voice. Please visit my channel, watch some videos and tell me what you think.

  • @talentlover thnank you for comment:)

  • Mr. Groban....Wonderful Job. You have the voice of an angel. However, this song cannot be covered. Don Mclean is the only one who can sing this song the way it is intended to be sung. No offense..but you are meant to be you. Cover songs are never the way to go. God speed.

  • @lynhois thank you soooo much:)

  • In regards to whether he did kill himself, for years this has been believed. However, now there is a theory that 2 teenagers shot him, but he did NOT want to get them into trouble, so just said he did it himself........How could anyone possibly Know this? Makes a great story, tho.

  • @cherylrthr thank you for your words

  • I prefer Mclean's version :)

    But it's ... good.

  • @nastkarose thank you:)

  • @nastkarose I think he is singing to Vincent too. Anne

  • Actually, he didn't take his own life, he just cut his ear off.

  • @WallySkungle Actually - he shot himself to death.

  • @somegalfromcan yes..unfortunately..

  • @WallySkungle unfortunately he killed himself...

  • @Anita8891 achually alot of people are starting to say that he didnt kill himself...their are alot of facts to back that up to...you should look it up its pretty intresting :)

  • @WallySkungle Vincent cut his ear off for his art, yes, but he actually attempted suicide by shooting himself in the chest. 2 days later this resulted in his death.

  • @mokibearblack yes,i agree,thank you

  • @mokibearblack (replying to my own comment here) there is actually a lot of controversy on the topic, however. Some people argue that he was killed, however he was mentally ill and he lived for nothing but his paintings. The paintings that "could not love him"... I suggest looking up the break down of the song as it represents different parts of his life.

  • @mokibearblack thanks

  • Glad it's my name :)

  • @TheOSUfan46 :)

  • I remember the first time I heard this song; I was 16 and reduced to tears. Overnight, I virtually became a "Grobanite", lol. In high school choir, he was such a major influence on my singing, and still is to this day whenever I perform. Wonderful video!

  • @ssr7736 thank you so much for your lovely comment, warm Grobie hugs

  • Josh Groban is amazing!! I love his voice <3

  • @MultiMusiclover60 oh,me too:))thank yuo for your comment!

  • I named my son after this song(:

  • @KatieGrady1997 oh,really?woow,really wonderful,beautiful name:)

  • I have the Don McClean version on vinyl and I listen to it while I cook in the kitchen. I adore both versions :)

  • @StrawberryPhanGirl oh,thank you:))for nice comment:)

  • I wish Josh would sing/record Winter Has Me in its Grip and Oh My What a Shame, two of the most beautiful Don McLean songs, for me, anyway.

  • @emofolkie oh,thank you...me too,maybe one day he will ,who knows:)

  • Josh is an excellent singer, but does this song no justice. All his songs sound alike after a while. Only Don McLean can sing it with such passion, originality and feeling. Josh should break into Opera. His voice is very operatic..... This song, Starry Starry NIght, is best sung by the orignial.

  • @MsGreenInspector thanks for your opinion,i think that these two interpretations are just different, but both are wonderful.

  • @Anita8891 The man is a very good singer and enternainer, but this is a perfect example of a cover that's gone bad. Great voice, fantastic hair, but sadly, an excellent song turned into a colorless mush. No talent is big enough to compensate for the lack of artistic inspiration.

  • @odinn70 Exactly

  • @ThePiosenkarz thanks:)

  • @Anita8891 Vincent VanGogh was one and only the Artist with no compromises

  • @ThePiosenkarz Zgadzam sie:)

  • @MsGreenInspector to me, to many, JOSH can sing the phone book and it would be beautiful! he's s virtuoso/ prodigy and more blessings, v

  • @Anita8891 Thank you Anita! Huge fan of Groban! I love all of his songs, but this cover he does of vincent tops it all for me :)

  • @SkyeLyon23 you are welcome ,it's a big pleasure to meet another Josh's fans:):)

  • i love josh groban he sings this song so effortlessly and with great gravity that pulls the heart strings. i watched him live in london and he was such an inspiration

  • @TheTuttifrutti12345 oh,me too,he is the best singer ever:):)

  • I was at the Concert in Stockholm, Ericsson Globe! It was everything I hoped it would be! I didn't know this, but he is actually a really funny guy!

  • @AmbientFire i was also there in Stokholm,it was wonderful!!:):)):

  • Josh conveys art through the sound of his voice. I listen often from one of God's blessing's.

  • @PocoPortillo oh,i tottaly agree:)

  • The way Josh sings this beautiful song brings tears to my eyes :,) He has such an amazing voice singing about such an amazing artist who was never understood.

Oh Vincent! If you only knew the people of today's modern world love the gifts you have bestowed and graced our world with. You are a man who is loved by many...especially me. ♥ Definately my favorite song!

  • @SkyeLyon23 wonderful and special comment, thank you so much, warm greetings

  • one of my fave song sung by one of my fave singer...good song and keep it up Josh

  • @tony34814 oh,thank you,i also love this song,thank you:)

  • @bluecaramel1 thank you so much for your comment:*

  • AWWW!

  • @hudna1 :)thanks

  • Excellent rendition of the song by a superb singer. I love the warmth of the vocal, the phrasing and interpretation. I prefer this version to the original.

  • @bmason1287 thank you so much for great comment:)

  • oh. my. god. his voice gives me goosebumps. (:

  • @MrsPattinson897 oh,me too,thank you for comment:)

  • I just commented on Paul Colliers status (beautiful artist), I said I wish all people who live on this earth could get it. Life is short, Vincent along with a lot of others ended their lives because they were in so much pain. Love your fellow man. It may sound corny but we are hateful instead of loving.

  • @3DxNick thank you for great comment:)

  • I believe it is perfectly legitimate to say that anyone who attempts this song will have to sustain a head-on comparison with Don's best rendition. Groban has a beautiful voice, but art is not limited merely to what kind of instruments we have at our disposal. The significance of timing, for instance, does not reduce to what can be read from a sheet of music. Groban's rendition is very much from the sheet, and all the worse for it. A strong reminder of the quality in Don's performance! :-)

  • @gpette3 thank you for your comment

  • One of Josh's best ever.

  • @Bchbaybe :))thank you for your comment:)

  • One of the most beautiful songs ever, sung by one of the most beautifully amazing singers ever! I could listen to this song over and over without tiring~*

  • @LillybethLilyLeah oh,i agree,i also love it,thank you for your comment:)

  • What is the meaning of the song? Is Vincent supposed to be an Artist ?

  • @ahuisenga1 yes,exactly

  • @ahuisenga1 Vincent Van Gogh's most famous painting was Stary Night. He went crazy and ended up shooting himself in the chest and died from the wound.

  • @ahuisenga1 Yes, the famous Vincent Van Gogh. This song is dedicated to him. Van Gogh was a brilliant artist, but also suffered from mental disorders, which eventually led him to take his own life. The song is VERY good as a representation of his life in my opinion.

  • @Dedicated222Duty I definately agree,a great wonderful explanation!:)thank you!:)
