It's very interesting to see clips like this that are never included in typical behind the scenes videos. Usually we just get the actors and director laughing together and having a merry old time making hai-larious mistakes or sharing in an endearing mutual exhaustion. This actual shows many dreary, monotonous, and even negative aspects of making a film.

@DeltaKilo3 Just watching any of the LOTR films you can understand what a gargantuan effort this franchise was. The artwork, the cgi, actors from all over the world - denmark, Australia, Britain, New Zealand, America - the painstaking detail in the makeup of the orcs, the elvish language, the massive sets. It's one of the greatest film achievements of the 2000s.

Haha Lord of the Rings is way better than Avatar. Tolkien made his own world with its own history, with its own landmarks and so much seemingly endless lore. Avatar took Pocahontas and changed the enviroment/people. Also the hobbit may be the best movie of my life time haha.

Aside from the awesomeness of the effort that went into the creation of these films, it pales in comparison to the effort that JRR Tolken put into actually creating not just a series of books, but an entire world's folklore. He made a world, then wrote books about it. He didn't just write stories about things that he came up with while writing. He had spent his life creating the various aspects that make up a culture's history. Incredible determination.

Peter Jackson, rescued the trilogy, after sequential films, Star Wars, Godfather, Back to the Future etc. I thought the sequel was dead, but LOTR saved it, progressively getting better and better.

Although to be honest it's just one large story with no gaps in time in between.

An epic in every sense.

@MaiziraSuzuki It's for ecological reasons.  When filming outdoors on public lands, there are often restrictions about what kind of damage you're allowed to do to the landscape. Certain features, like moss or sand dunes, are especially sensitive to foot traffic. Someone from the NZ government probably came out to the location before the shoot and gave them some guidelines about where they needed to be careful.

@omi38 theres an extended version of the trilogy. there are 2 discs for each of the 3 movies (there are extra scenes). then there are 2 other discs for each movie (the extended stuff). so in total 4 discs for each movie. its a big box you can buy. sorry but i don't know for sure which disc this particular bit is on.

@omi38 this isn't merely from the Extended Edition ... the 4-disc one. This is from the LOTR: FOTR LIMITED EDITION 2-DISC SET. This edition contains both theatrical and extended editions of the film on a single disc. The 2nd DVD contains this behind-the-scenes footage we are looking at. It isn't a featurette ... just the footage spliced together like this. I have these editions for TTT and ROTK, only b/c they cost less to purchase. Hope this helps.
