I've seen Mac Wiseman onstage at Cherokee, NC festival...he was all smiles, enjoying the sound of a song that I don't remember, but I do remember him, big smile on his face, saying: "Ain't that purty?! Ain't that purty?!" And it was "purty"!
I enjoy Mac .I am looking for a video of Jimmy Brown Revisited, and another I am looking for is Family Reunion featuring Porter Wagner. All of these songs hold a special place in bluegrass music.
I think this guitar Mac uses sounds better than the common Martin D-45. It is a custom made Yamaha LL55, a fantastic guitar. I have 4 great Martin guitars, but 2 great handmade Yamaha's as well. I really like the sound of this LL55 and it does not sound like a Martin, different character
@d35s2 I agree with you on the Yamaha guitars, I have an early FG180 that does just as well as my D28. I prefer it actually as it has the smaller body with just as much bang as the Martin. I saw Mac on stage many times here in Ontario and he always played a D28 but that was years ago. Wayne
my mama sang this song to me when i was little and i was 30 before i knew that she used to go down to the country store every weekend when SHE was little and listen to Mr. Wiseman sing it in person. it made me cry when i was a baby. makes me cry now for all together different reasons.
Love that voice.....Got to see Mac and Chubby Wise at a little festival in a cow pasture at Yeehaw Junction, Florida....about 1994 or so. He sang "Bringing Mary Home"....instant goosebumps!
I checked into this as I also wondered what make of guitar it was, it is a high end Yamaha like PHJimY said. Any show I've ever seen Mac played a D28 Martin.
The headstock on his guitar does look like a Yamaha, but the body looks like a Martin "40" series. Maybe it's a custom made Yamaha. What ever it is, he sure makes it sound good!
@strawman8 Mac always used a D28 Martin when on stage but I've seen him in a recording session with a Gibson hummimgbird. The guitar in this video is neither but cannot make out the make. He has an old D28 that has unbelieve sound.
@strawman8 It's a Yamaha guitar. He used it most of his career, but sadly it got stolen at a bluegrass festival so he's played a couple of different guitars since then.
Mac has used many MANY brands and models of guitars over the years, he started using mainly martins but switched to a custom brand , then to Aria and now uses mostly Yamaha as in this video.. I think it boils down to what mood he is in that day.
I met him 8 or so years ago and he was playing a gorgeous Guild then, but he seems to change guitars rather often.
Mac has been one of my idols from the time I first heard him sing "Love Letters in the Sand". I do love everything he sings but when he does the ballads I could listen to them all day. My favorite is "I'll Be All Smiles Tonight" altho it's a sad song. Mac's distinctive voice is such a treasure. He's in a league all his own I feel. When you meet and hear such a great artist as he is it's such a pleasure that no one else can touch. Thank you for posting this one. - Paula
@twinPaula12 I couldn't agree more Paula, this man has a voice I could listen to all day. I met him several times in Canada and he is a gentleman as well as a singer. Wayne
What an absolute marvel! I saw a recent (within last couple of years) of Mac singing at a birthday party--and his voice is still as true as it ever was--so unique and a blessing to us all.
85 is young, my father lived to 94 and his father lived to 97, They both were still going strong till acouple of months before they died. Mac has a long way to go yet,
Mac is 85 and we will lose him this year, another great voice that will be gone forever.... so sad. Today's so called country music lacks the great and unique voices like Mac and many others. Taste is gone in America!
@523mwise - What was said that upset you??? if Mac is your father you are truly blessed, your father was my favorite and I went to see him when he came to Toronto. God Bless - Wayne
@523mwise Sorry that this foolish post disturbed you, I loved Mac doing Bringing Mary Home, I ask him to do it for me when he appeared at the Horseshoe in Toronto and he did. I have followed him for many years. I also have a Bill Monroe album with Mac doing some of the vocals but there is no mention of him on the label. Wayne
One of the greatest voices to ever come down the road. This old song of his is the one most of us identify him with I imagine. I have always loved his love songs and have looked up quite a few of them. "Shackles and Chains" is my favorite of all of his songs altho it's hard to actually pick a favorite song by this legendary artist. We met him at Renfro Valley in the early 90's. He was in the audience and wouldn't give in to being requested to sing. Our loss. Thanks for posting. - Paula
Right..you can hear a million voices (that's what today's radio sounds like to me--all million at one time!)--but when you hear this voice--you KNOW who it is! It's MAC!
Mac has played for years..as Mac...He has never had a "band"..has always played with those that were there..and wanted to play with him...and all always did/do. I recall at a bluegrass festival..he pulled up in a white Cadillac..guitar out of the trunk..on stage and everyone flooded him--he did 90 minutes..shook hands..gleefully... got back in his Cadillac ..and drove off..
Mac would go to festivals and take no band. He would gather guys to play with him from the other bands, then skip out without paying them. It got to the point that nobody would play with him anymore. It's a shame, what a voice.
Hey thanks for posting that. I used to watch that show every week. I was interest to see that part where he says "I've got it boys, I got it" -- it surprised me when he said it that day. Who is on the mandolin?
@strawman8 and Amescountry: Yes , it is a 'high end' Yamaha guitar.

Mac's contract called for the promoter to provide and pay for the band. If you have a personal problem, you should speak to the promoter.
You should know of what you speak before opening your mouth and spreading ugly rumors.
