I love this song. I played the entire UP album when it was released, but this song had a special place in my heart. I think it was just so compact, so pithy (the song title had a lot to do with it). It reminded me of Day Tripper. Anyway, Stipe does a relentless and powerful rendition here. His eyes actually go into REM movements as he closes them. See the whites of his eyes? Stupendous...

I am a theatre electrician and I often have to work all night because it is the only time that I can get on stage when there is no performance or rehearsal taking place. @papakimz meanings of songs are different for everybody, but to me, it's the anthem/lamentation of being a working "vampire." fighting the sun-who becomes your enemy when you're trying to sleep- the "newspaper fray" to me, is knowing it's a new day because the the newspapers come in, and that is your indicator. the "headache grey" is the feeling you get when your body is saying "enough!" because it just wants to naturally rest.after awhile, you also look grey, probably from lack of vitamin D.
