  • i think REM really lost their way after this album. document's my personal fave

  • It's funny, I like this album a lot, but I like 'New Adventures in Hi-Fi', the record of theirs you hated most, a whole lot more. I've honestly never been able to take some of the songs on this one too seriously. 'Everybody Hurts' is just... too much, a little bit maudlin imo. I find New Adventures to be far more somber, genuine, and spiritual. But still, 'Find the River' and 'Montey got a Rotten Deal' are just beautiful tunes.

  • This album is better than Out of Time, the first half is better than the second.

  • i must not have a soul because this album does nothing for me and it is one of my least listened rem albums. i'm sure i would respect it more if i were a musician but feeling somber is not what i want from music.

objectively speaking, none of the songs on this album would make my rem top 100.

  • i wanna find this on vinyl =)

  • Awesome review. I love that bit about the album shutting the door on the '80s.

  • I had to watch this twice cos I realised that I didn't hear a single word you said when Sweetness Follows was playing lol

  • Why you stop with the band? Your music is so good!

  • what you said about find the river, couldnt be more perfect.

  • depressing music makes me the happiest...fuck people people sunny day happy music bull shit

  • This was my first R.E.M. album and hopefully my first album ever (could have been "Weird Al" Running With Scissors but I hope not). Ever since, R.E.M. has been the best music to ever reach my ears. New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 is absolutely beautiful. I can't blame you for silently listening at the beginning.

  • I originally thought that was a mandolin on "Monty" too, but apparently that whole song is bouzouki.

  • This is probably the most somber but yet the most hopeful albums and it's very nice album!

  • Great review. It is an iconic album, and I have heard a lot of different things of relevance in it at different times in my life. An album of depth and emotion, and maybe as listeners we can't really get that close to its true meaning though we can celebrate its ambience and often beautiful simplicity. To acceptance, I would add redemption.

  • dly dismiss the song "Drive" as to long..not only for this songs sake, but that implies that you are capable of doing this often with good "lengthy" songs. I know this might be your opinion, but i respect your opinion enough to educate and correct it. Now go take another listen to that song & if u will, tell me exactly how you would edit the arrangement..i will then play it on my guitar and imagine the production & i assure you,it wiill suck! Be well ma man, keep listening to good music! cheers.

  • It so easy for someone to just say "it was too long"..cuz all people really know, is what they like...and thats fine..but this album goes beyond ones attention span, it challenges it, it is nourishing, and just like anything "healthy" it requires geting used to and appreciating. The songwriting is very nourishing and is NOT going to steer anyone in the wrong direction...everything they do starts with instinct and is then refined and examined until it becomes a work of art. You cannot so haphazar

  • that a song done right; has its own natural potential that it must live up to, it has an arrangement that more or less writes itself, and if that means it has to be 10 minutes, then it has to be 10 minutes. Song length is always an issue to people who dont understand how a song is written, esp. when an intelligent song challenges ones attention span. These are major league songwriters, they know how to write and arrange a song..look at their body of work (as u have) why would they "get it wrong"

  • that 1 thing, about what you said in regards to the song "drive"....i cant let this one go..i dont know why i am so offended...but , you referenced the length of this song is too long? are you joking man? its fucking brilliant, its absolutely perfect. How else would you arrange it? What would you cut out? I bet no matter what you would try to do to edit it shorter, you would just be stripping away the natural flow and life of the song. I am a professional songwriter and i can safely tel you

  • Thumbs up to your videos ma man! I chose to make an general overview comment under your "Automatic" review because this album is clearly REM's gem album. I do appreciate all the things you have to say in your rem discography. I agree with some and don't agree with some, only natural. But for the most part , you have given me a perspective of the band's evolution with more interesting information. There is only 1 thing and 1 thing only that i feel adamant about using conviction towards, and

  • What do you think of Nightswimming?

  • Oh, I forgot to say. Monty got a raw deal is my fave song ever, all time. I can't explain why. Maybe cuz it haunts me in a comforting way that no song has ever done. Maybe it was timing, but it is like nothing I have heard before and I am open to new ideas

  • ugh, I love your rating, but some of it bothers me (what you said)

  • fav rem album documents 2nd ur reviews r awesome could u do any U2 reviews?

  • Comment removed

  • Great review. By the way, it's pronounced "Hoosker Doo."

  • you say automatic for the people is your second rem album, what's your first?

  • FACT: kurt cobain killed himself listning to this.... true

  • @calzacool9 all the more reason to buy it on vinyl =)

  • @calzacool9 we don't even know if he did kill himself, could be murder, to many loose ends.

  • @calzacool9 I'm not surprised, i would kill myself too, if i had to listen to this...

  • automatic for the people is one of those rare albums that invoke a wide abundance of emotions. every song was hit you hard. i cant think of many albums that have achieved that. maybe mellon collie and the infinite sadness...im sure there are other i just cant seem to think right now. great video!

  • Hey SirAllAboutMusic...

Been really enjoying your music reviews. Damn... I was your age when this record came out. Wish you would have touched on Sidewinder, but that's ok...

This is my fav of the Warner Bros. years... sorry you hate New Adventures in Hi-Fi so much. I didn't think it was "that bad"... I thought it was the "sequel" to Automatic... just like Monster was the sequel to Green. I dunno.

Maybe Up was the sequel to Out of Time... not sure.

    Cheers!

  • What would you say are your top 5 albums? You should review a Sigur Rós album, preferably "Takk..." or "Ágætis byrjun". Sorry I'm gettign a bit greedy with the requests as I already requested the queen is dead in the murmur vid lol. Keep up the great work! Oh and an "OK Computer" review or a classic Beatles album review would be cool. Yeah i should shut up now lol.

  • I love murmur, listened it this one a few times liked it and kind of disregarded it, I'm going to give this another listen after this vid. Like the sunset/sunrise analogy, deep! Great work!

  • great review of a great album.

  • Thanks man!

  • @SirAllAboutMusic I really like your review of Automatic For The People. Would you do a Zwan Mary Star Of The Sea review. You did good it's hard to put an REM album into words.

  • @deathspelloubega

Automatic is my favourite x very good review who ever u are! email me moonshakra@msn.com REM are my life xxx

  • You put your finger on the theme. Acceptance. To make an album so dark, so depressing, so melancholy, so inevitable and then to leave you at the end with such a feeling of hope for the 'now' is a difficult trick. Is there a better album out there? I havent heard many. Should I have left off the 'm' there? Bloody excellent review. Well done.

  • Thanks a lot mate, I'm glad you liked the vid!

  • end game intro:)

  • Haha :D

  • You make some interesting points, Try Not To Breathe is my favorite song on the album as well. I agree that the lyrics are fantastic, uplifting, and rebellious. New Orleans Instrumental No. 1 is my favorite atmospheric song, and possibly the best atmospheric instrumental of all time. Star me Kitten is gorgeous, unyielding, a hidden gem. Monty Got The Raw Deal, my other favorite song, due to the Mandolin and arrangement. Ignoreland provides a good break for a somber album. 5 star album.

  • This is a beautiful and nearly flawless album. My absolute favorite in the R.E.M. discography. Sad and uplifting.

  • I agree with pretty much everything you say in this review. Automatic for the People is really terrific... in every tough part in my life, where I thought I had nowhere to turn, I turned to this album, and it put me back on my feet. Its power is simply undeniable. I really like how you described the album as "old." I never thought of it that way before, but it makes a lot of sense. Great review.

  • Thanks a lot! I'm glad you liked the vid!! This si just one of those albums that touches a deep part of your soul, specially when things get rough.

  • This album makes my head explode from all the beauty in it. It is really just an awe inspiring album.

  • You skipped Nightswimming!!

    Otherwise, a great review.

    I agree about all tracks.

  • Automatic For The People is definetly R.E.M's best 90s album. After the shitty sell out that was Out Of Time R.E.M. puts out this gorgeous masterpiece.

  • Yeah, Automatic has def stood the test of time as well. It still sounds pretty current.

  • i borrowed my uncle's copy of this album back in 1994 and never gave it back. He's dead now, which makes playing it a bit creepy, but cool too.

  • That is creepy. Death just seems to be associated with this album. Maybe it's cursed. O_O

  • "drive is too long" ?? very cultured opinion. that's what you have to say? :)) come on. just... go to university for a few years, then do music reviews. they'll have A LOT more substance.

  • Good to know that music is only for people who have gone to university for a few years, that only they have the culture to understand it. :)

  • not at all. they just make far better reviews.

  • Thank you for clarifying! :) The simple fact is is that I find the song to be too long. That's the only thing I don't like about it. Is that so hard to believe?

  • This review inspired me to listen to this album again, I'm much more of a earlier REM fan, but you can't deny the power of Automatic For The People.

  • awsome... your best review in my opinion...

  • Thanks a lot! I think I'll be keeping with the commenting on each song, I like it. Though the videos are a tad bit long...
