  • 0:54 reminded me "Raining Man" (It's raining man, hallelujah,it's raining man)

  • The best part of this lesson is that the teacher is actually having fun.

  • i love how unlike other guitarrists you have fun in your tutorials while getting the musical theory in there and FAQ's answered.

  • Great lesson Marty.thank you

  • is that a bossman vox??

  • Marty, if were a girl......jus kidding, your the best dude!

  • when we're plugging in the natural minor scale from our pentatonic, our root is always gonna start with the pentatonic root on the 5th string?

  • @dipsettt18 shut up prick

  • @dipsettt18 fuck you dick

  • why dont you show us the fucking scales dude? seriously we get it your good. Show us how to play the modes/scales maybe even tab it for us...

  • Marty is incredible he knows exactly whats in our.. student's mind when we are confused, when we need to repeat something.... when to emphasize something he really is a perfect smart teacher marty you are the man i will buy all your dvds soon.

  • Liked, Fav'ed, Subscribed. Good stuff!

  • to be fair, you can take the mick, but Marty is easily the best guitar teacher on the web

  • i have been playing guitar for 30 years. i know alot and have forgot alot. ive had many teachers and taught many. this dude knows what he is talking about and is the best teacher i have ever encountered. i would have gave anything to have someone like this when i started. pay attention to him.

  • ur great marty (needless to say that ) but u r awesome man...i would give up my right leg to play like that ..:-)

  • Right

The minor and major pentatonic are still good

but u can add some extra passing notes

    We heard it here.

    Many thanks

  • does anyone know natural major scale?

  • well, that's fffng genius!

  • That dog was doing some great licks at the beginning

  • I think santana uses this mode a lot for soloing

  • @TwoBitSodapop you are correct, lol

  • baby dog!!

  • I've been teaching my students the same way for some time now....'learn the pentatonics then add the half steps'.. I'm so glad you said this. I try to remind my students that there are really only five basic patterns to learn. great stuff, man.

  • @evaninsky2 What are the 5 patterns? Can you point me in the direction of a good website with information on this?

  • what guitar is that marty?? or someone :)

  • @kikysspliff It's a Heritage, made at the old Gibson factory in Kalamazoo I believe, but I don't know the name of the model.

  • @peedutt thanks so much :)

  • hey can anyone tell me the chords for the improvisation/solo? thanks

  • This is exactly the way I've started to practice modes. I've been playing all morning and I am blown away at how easily I could apply this technique! Once I had the minor pentatonic down, I just added the flatted 5th in for blues. I recently found out I could add 2 other notes to play a particular mode. I thought I had to learn a new system, which I did with aeolian and got down but I wish I knew this sooner! I'm working on phrygian now. Thanks to you Marty, because I've learned plenty from you!

  • I got a little guitar rage when I realized that I just discovered this lesson 15 months after it was posted....if I can noodle like this in 15 months I'll get over it.

  • Ive been playing like stale bread for the past year, started watching your lessons last week and its like fresh air man. love it, thanks dude

  • I wish I could noodle around and have it sound like that.

  • that was beautiful

  • best blues i have foud on the internet

  • dude i would yes uve become my teacher since i had my guitar(acoustic) i really love the way you teach... soo calm. :D lol ayt ...

    keep it up bro...

  • well i cant play that good early in tha mornin

  • Marty, thank you for being such a good teacher and musician! You make everything so much easier and simpler so I can understand music really better! At first I thought that all of these "modes" were completely diffrent things you had to know to be able to play as you wanted, now I know that they are the same notes but over diffrent chords ! You have helped me a lot! Thank you again!!!

  • if you close your eyes when he talks, it sounds like jonah hill is teaching you blues

  • Is there a jam track for this vid?

  • i need tht dog

  • Marty you're unreal dude. I always had my own style of playing by ear, but even a few of your free lessons have helped me progress soo much. (Especially in E-minor lol) I think I've milked your free lessons long enough. When I get approved for a credit card, I think I owe it to you (and myself) to buy your dvd. Cheers ol boy

  • what guitar is that?

  • Near the end, you were talking about knowing your pentatonic well, but for me it's the opposite. I know my way around the fretboard in a mode way better than I know my way around in pentatonic. When I was learning, I tried to stray away from pentatonic because I found out it was one of the most widely used scales. I didn't want to sound generic, I guess. It's a very beautiful scale if used correctly, though. I just hear too many artists play in the same shape in the scale. Ruined it for me.

  • your sound is great what amp are you using? Also you give great informative lessons and The Icing on the cake is you have fun doing it.

    Keep up the good work

  • he looks high lol

  • damn i wish i could play that scale as fluent as you man

  • cute doggie reminds me of my girlfriend haha

  • I agree. This is my favorite blues "snack" as Marty says.... that I've ever heard.

  • so sweet !

what is the name of you dog ?

    i have one similar.

  • humble guy !!! good teachings!!

  • everyone learns differently and his way of teaching is really helpful for me

  • This is the best video Marty's done....fucking blew my mind when I realised how much it affected my playing.

  • @elektra1984 Don't talk about yourself like that.

  • it's a heritage guitar. made in the US. dude!

  • thanks, dude!!!!

  • What make of semi - hollow body guitar is he playing?

  • Marty.... If you make a DVD series of modes.... consider it bought.

  • DUDE Thaaaank you so much for showing this scale, I'm absolutely loving it, gonna lay down a couple tracks and try and make some songs, soloing with this baby

  • 4:33-4:39 is awesome

  • ya that part is great..shows great feeling

  • if u gave that pup a mini fedora it could be like a Fido commercial lol... newho love the vids man n if it werent for u.. i wouldnt practice daily..so thanks n keep it up plz (that beginning chord makes me wana hear - welcome to the machine)(27-33sec)

  • I try and watch this vid at least once a day. simply amazing

  • Marty's soloing over the Em in itself was so instructive let alone what he spoke about

    thanks so much

  • I f***ing love you man! (and I'm not gay)

  • I've got a pom who loves to sit and listen to me play, she preferes the spanish guitar over the electrics. Oh yea, thanks for sharing these amazing lessons with us!!!

  • Thanks marty you are really helping out

  • dude, Marty you're awesome. thanks for all the lessons

  • Marty my man, not only do you make it LOOK easy, you also just make it plain EASY.

  • your the man Marty! thanks :D

  • not to beat a dead horse but I have been practicing what you teach for the last six to eight months, and going to school for music and business, and I have learned more from your tutorials than anything else. Your the real deal Marty thank you.

  • Just started watching your videos. Great stuff. You mentioned accurately about learning a bunch of scales and technique... While useful to know and practice, sometimes you just gotta make music, experiment and be creative. Your random thoughts on which types of scales and which notes to use are very helpful, because it gives a good base point to start and experiment on my own.

Great videos, looking forward to learning more.

  • Marty you are simply the fucking man. You make anyone who watches you jealous and want to work harder. And when people say you're the best on :"youtube" what they're saying is that you are the best teacher possibly on planet earth. How many people give tutorials on youtube? millions.......and you're # 1.

  • cute dog :D haha

  • marty you're the best

  • That progression sounds great if you add Am7 and D7 on to the end.

  • gotta say your the best instructor on youtube in terms of its actually possible to learn off your

  • Yeah, he's got a real gift for simplifying anything, and showing you how to do a lot with just a few notes.

  • lol doggy is so awesome

  • wikd video marty. DO MORE BLUES!!!

  • Thanks again marty, once my hand heals up, I'm getting my wife to buy me some of your dvd's for my birthday. You are the man, thanks for all the "freebies."

  • Albino rat? Surely not a dog. I've seen dogs before, and that couldn't possibly be one. How about "learnyourmammalsdotcom".

  • its a tea cup chiwawa

  • Thanks for this Marty, I had a massive breakthrough after watching this one. Love that progression aswell, it's fun to play it into the loop in a metal chuggy style.

  • What does it mean when i play and scales and modes, What is modes.??

  • hey that was a good video... god dammit i need guitar lessons...

  • Who the hell is he lookng at?

  • It says "live lesson" at the beginning of the video. He is looking at some lucky guy getting a real live lesson!

  • thank u marty..the blues is so me

  • combining modes and pentatonic scales cool.

  • Awesome lesson Marty. Some people want to meet a sports pro. My goal? Jam w/ Marty in Chicago, among others. XD

  • once again you have helped me improve my playin skills. no one else can take that credit. martys the shit.

  • i think this guy just hit the bong before he made the video...lol good shit tho!

  • sounds like flamenco almost...

  • that's a cute dog. is it yours? wait... i guess you don't respond to comments on your videos....

  • You seriously think he has time to respond to every youtube comment? Im quite sure he has lots more interesting things to do. And besides.. He has responded to lots of comments.

  • he responds if you say something totally retarded like; "Marty was that in 12/8 time because my drummer likes tool and Bonjovi played acoustic in the 80's in like 2/4 time?"

u know, a real like, "wtf is that?" type comment.

    lmao but its true

  • so you're basically just agreeing with me, right? cus' that's what i said.

  • prolly my fav scale

  • Marty, please make a DVD on the Modal scales

  • yes i would buy this

  • Santana!!!!!

  • what does pentatonic scale mean?

  • penta=5. 5 note scale.

  • The scale most associated with Rock and Blues

  • How can you not like the puppy dog!! Always nice to get a nice slurp from your friend:)

  • MY IDOL AS WELL! (If I was a millionaire I'd move to his neighbourhood and have lessons every day)

  • it sounded so diffrent with those halfsteps... but i guess thats the point ^^

great to know about and eventually learn, thanks for the lesson m8

  • MY IDOL

  • Did the pooch teach you any good licks?

(Ouch! I think I have to go and self-harm now...)

Another great lesson Marty, as always. My guitar often leaves me feeling pretty dour but your lessons are always a good antedote, both inspirationally and in terms of improving my mood. We need more pooch!

  • Marty rocks!

  • yeah, I also like Justin Sandercoe as well. Of course there other great teachers on youtube but both Marty and Justin have TONS of videos all ready.

  • This lesson is exactly why I watch Marty, and even more so, why I buy his DVDs.

  • Thanks.

  • i feel this is above me for now, i jam out in my minor scale...im ready to move to the next level but dnt know where to go....

  • ...stoner. great lesson man! really helps

  • @guitarjamzdotcom

really good video man , your a good teacher.

ps. dude you are so blazed lol =>

  • @guitarjamzdotcom

maybe you looked sad as it was 9/11? :P

  • shut up!

think Mary's a bit of Mr Jimi (in the guitar love sense) he plays until he passes out everyday, i bet hes just got bagg eyes from jamming way into the night here.

    cheers marty!

  • damn Marty That sounded so F*ing nice man, I've been self teaching myself for about a year now and i never knew you could play scales over a chord like that and make it sound like you're shredding almost. The funny thing is that i happen to already know the scale you played and the modes around the Chord as well but i had never implemented them into the chord playing simultaneously, I just knew how to play the chord.

Thanks alot this video was very helpful

  • 1. pretty sure your high today (share the wealth)

    2. where are you looking. its like those family photos you see where everyone is looking slightly to the left as if something is happening off camera that's really cool.

    3. glad you are heading into some of the other scales.

  • Really nice articulation, inspiration for my learning. Nice explanation of modes. doc

  • thanks charlie

  • what happened to youcanlearnguitar?

  • Comment removed

  • A person obviously, he has them play at 3:15

  • can a person play the minor pent over major chords?

  • yeah but it would not 'gel' as well it would be better to play the major pentatonic...

  • use the major pentatonic and minor pentatonic for the end... but if you are playing power chords you can use minor pentatonic stuff alot because power chords dont have major or minor chords. but just use your ear... if a lick sounds good, then go for it, and if it sounds like shit, dont play that lick again...

  • was that little Paco de Lucia I saw? haha

  • youre the man marty!

  • Sounds like you guys might have been working on getting the sound of "Beside you". Maybe I'm wrong. Anyway great lesson Marty. Thanks

  • wow that was great! not an as easy lesson as i'm used to but i'f i'm better this'll be the first lesson i'll come back to

  • You are a man of many facets Marty. You're like an exquisite gem, and as Corpsegrinder1712 says, "you don't suck ass"! LOL Seriously, thanks for opening the secret world of music to let us peak in and learn so much so quick! 5 stars always man! Pets make us better humans.
