@mozzrt i will end by saying that the christian path is something i am very familiar with as it is what i was raised with. so when you say people don't even want to try, again, many have tried. for many people christianity is not where they will find their truths about life, love, death, the interconnectedness of everything in the universe etc. people such as your self will find that place in the abrahamic faiths and others will find it in pagan, tao, buddhist, hindu etc.
@mozzrt and everybody really wins when no one points fingers claiming their truth to be the one and only truth. when we can respect peoples differences with no ands ifs or buts, then we all win. something mahatma gandhi saw very clearly. my own work of intolerance toward the intolerant faiths is a work in progress but then again such is life. all the best to you
@mozzrt listen buddy, i try to respect people from all faiths but how can one respect a belief system that does not respect others. have you ever heard the old saying "what goes around comes around"? what christianity doles out it's going to get back in return. it's the law of karma to reap what you sew in this universe. you are right about one thing though. to truly find oneself, one must live live a selfless life. but with no expectations in return.
If you believe in karma, then you must believe in a judgment standard. You are judging Christians saying they will be punished for doing exactly what you are doing.
@mozzrt the christian path teaches to obey it's teachings because there is a big reward of eternal life in heaven if you "obey". that my friend is selfishness ! if the only reason you do good for others is so YOU can have eternal life. selflessness on the other hand asks for nothing in return. no eternal life, no rewards, just giving with no strings attached. this is the reason for the career i have chosen in health care
@mozzrt when someone asks you to politely to not try and sell them your beliefs, why do you disrespect them and proceed with doing that very thing ? i understand that you are passionate about your beliefs and that is wonderful for you. but there are billions of beautiful people in this world who do not accept your god as their own and will go on to live happy fulfilling lives. please attempt to understand that your way is not the only way. there are many rivers that lead to the sea !
I'm not just passionate about Jesus. That's a gross understatement. I would die for Christ. That's more like it. And not everybody wins. All other faiths are works-based, but true biblical christianity is based on the blood of Jesus and his sacrifice on the cross as the atonement. Happy fulfilling lives are not the goal for christians. Living a life of sacrifice to share in His suffering is the point. Eternity with Him is the Ultimate Fulfillment.
christians are always going on about being saved. saved from what ? obviously if you feel you need to be saved you live your life in fear of something....so if you don't have fear in your life, you don't need to be saved from anything now do you ? belief in a creator that demands worship in order to save you is an attachment issue that holds one back from evolutionary conciousness of the self and ultimately the non-self. not trying to pick fights here or judge anyone just throwing that out there
@mozzrt how can you speak for me and what i believe and what i have been through in my own life? i too, years back was on the brink of suicide and it was my inner reflection, my belief in myself that truly brought me back to happiness, through quieting my mind and letting go of attachments. this way i could and can clearly see how everything is interconnected in this universe. i see belief in god as ultimate attachment and a hindrance to the growth of self realization.
@mozzrt and yes, my beliefs are atheistic but i do have some radical thoughts connected to life after death and also find much truth in the buddhist and taoist path as well as many old world animistic beliefs. if christianity is a path that works for you and brings you happiness, i am happy for you. as long as you do not condemn and judge your fellow man for having beliefs outside of it's scope, i can respect that. it is the intolerant judgement of nonbelievers that brings forth my distaste
@mozzrt to the christian path. i will also mention that i value, respect and put into practice using whole and raw foods for a healthy lifestyle. one of the most important ways to have clear vision and conciousness in life is through a diet that is connected to the earth and to stear away from processed crap that slowly poisons our bodies and minds. the processed food and pharmaceutical companies exist for their own self centered greed alone at the cost of the health of millions
@mozzrt and please do not bother trying to sell me your personal jesus because there is no interest here for that thanks. the true path to selflessness has NO strings
@illbehonest I hope I can do the same thing - I don't want to attend a seminary, especially since I have like 5 classes left to graduate with a political science degree. But I'm born again now and I want to be a pastor and an evangelist and a teacher - but I don't have the money to go to school longer. I'm so glad to hear Conway did what I feel very called to do.
sadly this eddy reminds me of a guy i once knew he always attended church and always asked for money for candy seriously he wasnt an alcoholic like me he was just a good person. i seen him come out to the alter and tell the church to pray for him. he only wanted to get closer to God. i never drank or took drugs before. yet he and his mom crashed one day he died now im confused!?
However I still examine myself, I just don't agonize over the results of the examination. If I agonize over it, I don't have peace. If I realize God loves me and wants me to succeed, and wants me to be holy yet I still don't want to be pressured over it. If I'm going to be like Christ, I will, pressure will have no part in it. There are struggles but when I rest in Christ there is peace. Also being honest with oneself is so important for any worth while endeavor in any part of life.
My initial vibe is that I do not see where the "babe in christ" would fit in to a ministry such as this. It seems that spiritual maturity would be expected on the onset of giving your life to Christ, which would nullify 1 Pet 2:2-3. It seems that Eddie is a babe in Christ (like me) and that he's trying to spiritually mature, but if he's taken off the roll, that leaves little room for maturation w/o being kicked out the church. That is largely what I got from this video but that's just me.
You know, I sometimes wonder... why is it that "born again" christians rarely look happy? When I look at a talk by Ajahn Brahm, most of the time he's smiling, laughing, not taking himself too seriously. It's kind of more convincing to me, folks, if a religion actually makes its followers calm, friendly and happy.
I think that people who are Christians will struggle with faith sometimes its a part of believing. Ajahn Brahm is a buddhist, its a completely different faith. Also I think it is possible to smile laugh and enjoy life as a Christian. When I realized that God loved me even with my mistakes, I became a happier man. When I stopped judging myself every moment It was a weight off my shoulders. I think that was what this young man Eddie was doing. "Forsake your self and follow Jesus"
@Itsfaith33 Yeah, well the question is, why burden yourself with a complicated, badly designed belief system that will undermine your self-confidence and suppress you with guilt-trips, when you can just as well have ease of mind without it, and become a better human being in the process?
@betlamed Is THAT your experience? hmmmm now wonder you don't want to be a Christian! however that is not the experience of other people who are followers of Christ. The truth is that though many things in Christianity are perhaps difficult, when one has a relationship with God it is worth it. Its not at all how you explain it. Your experience/perception of being a Christian is not what I follow. And what I find in Christ is not at all what you say is there.
@Itsfaith33 We obviously can't debate experience, because it's entirely subjective and we don't know each other. However, whatever you find in Christ, I will answer, what keeps you from finding it in yourself? That is, very simply put, the main difference in method between the abrahamic and the eastern religions. I never got why I should imagine a god-being and then project my needs unto it, when I can just fulfill those needs myself.
You choose not to believe. Ok! Now that we have that behind us, lets leave it ok? I too have investigated the various beliefs and I found that my experience with yes the Abrahamic tradition of Christianity fulfilled my needs spiritually. I find something in the belief that I don't find in myself. It is something I cannot fulfill myself and I cannot explain that. But honestly I think this is a waste your time and my time. I believe, you do not. Not much more to say!
@Itsfaith33 And yet, at almost the same time, you gave a totally different answer. I think that making religion totally subjective isn't very satisfying to most people. And I also think it's much more honest to take part in the discussion, even if we can never convince each other and even if it's a bit uncomfy. Peace between religions will not come from silence, but from this uncomfortable, unsolvable discussion.
from a discussion? What religion do you subscribe to so I can criticize it? Just kidding! I don't need to criticize, but I could point out where I think that belief system doesn't work for me just the same as you do for my own beliefs. So in the end this discomfort we speak of is really just an explanation of where we are at in our ideas on life. Peace between religions? I don't oppose anyones religion, I just believe they are all in vain.
The questions you are asking are questions that have to do with truth. What is true? What is truth? If Christ was the truth, then he is the source. Not me. He was the one who said, "Love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, all thy mind and all thy strength. And love your neighbor as yourself." I trust his words and his words point to God. A source that was higher than he was! so you ask me why not find what I find in him in myself? Because Christ didn't. He prayed for Gods help.
@Itsfaith33 Christ was god. So it is a perfectly valid, christian interpretation to say that christ found truth in himself, and that this was what he was trying to communicate. .. Why find it in yourself? Because it probably makes you more peaceful, and because your life might be much easier. Because believing is your choice anyway, so obviously you're really finding it in yourself even now - so why not be honest?
@betlamed I take exception with your statement because Christ himself said in his own words that "the father is greater than I" While he was on earth we know that for sure. So again I follow Christs example in seeking guidance from God for spiritual things. Ok so Christ is God but even so, I am not. I do not subscribe to the idea that we are all God. I do believe in a God who is higher than I. In life......we all experience the wonder of having experience. even so, I trust the higher rock
"I pray for them: I pray not for the world, but for them which thou hast given me; for they are thine. And all mine are thine, and thine are mine; and I am glorified in them." [John 17:9,10]
"The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand." [Ps. 37:23,24]
"And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and WHEN thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren." [Luke 22:31,32]
I really value what Tim said beginning at 12:45, reminds me of something Paul Washer had said that it's not our job to save people but to show people the way to be saved. Thanks Eddie for the testimony, for Tim and Pastors who are teaching of true repentance and a bearing of fruit in keeping with that repentance.
Eddie, you were living under the law, under a burden of works, which no person can fulfill. If you want to be set free, you need the knowledge of the truth. Read Hebrews at least 10 times.
Of course we don't know exactly what was going on with Eddie's life, but I am THANKFUL that there are preachers like Tim Conway who would take a man's doubts seriously and remove his name from the church membership. Most pastors probably would have tried to convince him he was saved (which is rightly the Spirit's work, not mans) and never would've even thought of removing him from membership. The reason sadly is because many pastors & congregations are more concerned with numbers than salvation.
