  • You can have all 3 desktop environments by using sudo apt-get to download the other desktop environments.

For KDE: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop

For XFCE: sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop

For GNOME: sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

  • You don't have to really "switch". You can use both, you can select which desktop environment you want each time you login by installing them.

You can use terminal to install them by entering this command...

For xfCe: sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop-enviroment

For KDE: sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktop-enviroment

  • you CAN have compiz on Xubuntu..

  • I just want to make a couple of corrections.

XFCE CAN use everything Gnome does, as it is built on the GTK base.

Gnome is EXTREMELY configurable, you just have to dig a little deeper to change some things. I know someone is going to flame on that last comment, and say "you have to be a Linux expert to know where to look", and all I can say is,.....partly true, you have to know your way around Linux to find the places to make some changes.

  • KDE bloated? and you call Gnome lightweight... wow and XFCE has everything Gnome has because it is built off of GTK you noob... honestly stop making videos since you don't know what you are talking about apparently

  • Yeah , this fool as no clue wtf he is going on about in this video. All I had to hear was the part where he called Xfce a "linux" , rofl clueless much?

  • XFCE is a nice backup windows manager. If anything is going wrong in GNOME or/and KDE 3/4 you can switch to XFCE and repair something.

XFCE is ok, but KDE 4 is more sexy so I stay by KDE 4.2 dev version.

  • Cool Video B+++++++++++++++++++++++

  • I don't really have a preference, to be honest. I grew to use Ubuntu with Gnome, so I prefer that over the KDE desktop. Though I grew to use the highly customized KDE on SuSE, and highly prefer it to Gnome, but only on SuSE.

I have an old PC that runs smoothly with XFCE, and it's mainly used by the least tech savvy people in my house so it's simple for them.

The search features in Linux for the most part are very annoying, but that's just my opinion. I've been having indexing problems on 8.04.

  • Me too I like kde on suse but I have wifi issues and kde is still bloated though

  • there are audio issues i have with gnome and xfce actualy fixed them.

xfce is good it is on par with gnome on alot of levels not to mention if you use it on a pc with alot of ram you can run more apps cuz it takes up less ram!

gnome is for ppl who just don't want to configure so much and is good for the basic user.

  • why aren't you using emerald it such a good window decorator

  • emerald isn't so great

  • Xfce DOES have Compiz!

also, I find Xfce is great for power users.

also, that "gnome is geting less configurable"line sounded like my comment on Sam's vid.

  • but most who use xfce use it for low end machines where compiz isnt an option kde is better for power users who want complete control in my opinion

and yes ur comment was right i didnt steal ur comment i just said wat was true

  • DUDE i have no IDEA what your talking about XFCE IS AMAZING IM NEVER GOING BACK some GNOME apps run better on XFCE than GNOME just DL the system restrictive files from Ubuntus website and it can do eveything gnoe can and more

  • xfce is too far behind watch youll see

  • just try out xubuntu Ibex alpha with the ubuntu drivers installed from ubuntus website its like gnome on steroids

  • if u can explain how i'll try it

  • I personaly perfer Gnome on ubuntu and debian, but if I were using slackware, I would use Xfce.

And I was not saying Xfce wasn't good for older machines, I was saying it's good for newer ones to!

P.S: I know you didn't steal my comment, I just found simularity funny.

  • as for KDE, a power user would probably hate the bloatedness.(which is why I don't use it.)

  • yeah but its easier to develop on qt if ur a developer

  • xfce is meant for older machines though and its ok for new ones

  • If gnome weighs 15 lbs, Vista weighs over 9,000 lbs and XFCE weighs 5 lbs, Witch one would rather carry? If XFCE can run faster than gnome with less resources, then It should be more efficient on any machine.

Xubuntu has the same repositories as Ubuntu and it can run gnome programs, just like gnome can run Konversation, Kaffeine and Konqueror.

  • indeed :)

  • True but Xubuntu can't do as many things as gnome can.
