I don't understand something:Didn't the varangian guard leave Constantinople in the 13th century? But the ottomans invaded Constantinople in the middle of the 15th century...So why this song??Ok they mention MAnzikert but that was not the end of the byzantian empire. It lasted for another 400 years..
@TheLegioXII Not Roma. The roman Empire was divided. The east part evolved into Byzantion, an Empire with a Greek Identity. The capital was Constantinoupolis (City of Constantinos). This song is about the fall of the Empire in 1453 with the last Emperor odly being a man named Constantinos.
@romanospapa Byzantium. And the empire was called the Byzantine. The Emperor Constantine had Byzantium renamed Constantinople. Also, there were at least eleven emperors named Constantine, so it's not really odd.
@Thyunda Actually it was called the Roman Empire. There might not have been all that much in the way of Roman identity or culture there but the official name for the country was the Roman Empire. The name Byzantine Empire is a construction of later historians. The fact that they claimed this title was a fairly big point of contention in medieval, especially early medieval history.
@romanospapa Dude I know the freaking history spare me the lecture. Rome and Greece were similar enough that they might as well have been one. They called themselves the Romans for a reason.
Except for this song, I think the other albums were better. This album is not bad at all, but this is the only song that STANDS UP AND FIGHTS the other albums songs.
Sorry, but I have to disagree. I love that classical touch they gave their songs. There's just so much variety so that it's never getting boring. The songs kinda remind me of LOTR, they're just epic!
@HerrUhyre It's definitely different, but...the new flavor is just as well expressed, I think. Might be a bit more of an acquired taste for most Turisas fans, but the album is still very well-done.
@moe5513 The growls made this song dude. It accents the horror of the things this empire have done, and the sad poetry of the atrocities they've commited, all on the basis of simply serving their empire.
@SaotaTheSangheili yeah don't care about symbolic shit. anyway, the song would have been better if they had made the "out of the ashes..." part longer, then they could add whatever growls they want. Imo
@moe5513 Well if you don't care about symbolic shit, which is what they fucking work their hardest on, then you're not a true metal fan. Get the fuck out.
@hayabus111a yep, agree but it's just MUSIC! Do you have to care about lyrics to be a "true metal fan"? How can then 90 % procent of you guys even listen to korpiklaani and finntroll? know i can, I speak both languages.
@moe5513 well, i'm not a metalhead just for listening to the lyrics, i guess i like songs or music with deep meaning and truth lyrics w/awesome melody. Finntroll for example, maybe i don´t speak their language, but i just look on the dictionary and then i translate the text. But like i said, being a metalhead it´s not just for the lyrics
The whole album really reminds me of an epic movie. March of the Varangian Guards as intro, Stand Up And Fight as the part in the middle, this song as the great battle, The Bosphorus Freezes Over as an ending, Broadsword as epilogue and Supernaut as credits song :P
I'm not sure why this album is getting any bad reception with Turisas' fans. I think it's their best work. The sound is more mature and less raw, and I suppose that can take some getting used to. It's amazing to see what they can do with a real orchestra. This album is proof that they can take their style to new places, while still retaining their identity (Like Haeresiarchonte said). The style of the first two albums was so unique that another album of it would have been boring.
"-‘End Of An Empire’, possibly the most impressive track on the album, includes a grand arrangement of classical choir, grand piano and even a touch of Theremin to add to the splendor. The songwriting here is a far stretch from the folk metal scene Turisas has been placed in, and secures them as one of the most original acts in the market."
@HerrUhyre I gotta disagree. This album is truly a masterpiece. Of course, the two others albums were very good, but still "Stand Up and Fight" is just exceptionnal. Funny fact, Turisas sound more like Therion on this album than Therion recently... With elements of Nightwish, too (the true Nightwish, with Tarja), and yet, it still remains Turisas. No no no, this album is definitely a masterpiece. The two bonus tracks are not that great, but the original compositions are wonderful.
I know all you guys say this album is worse than the other two, but I'd completely disagree. While it's deffinilty A LOT different, this is the direction they're going for, once you accept that, i find you love the album a lot! The music is very theatrical, almost movie like. Yes the lose of the folky elements is upsetting, but It's still a fucking amazing album and will get these guys up there in the symphonic metal world!!
@6ixpoint5ive definitely agree, they're going for a new direction which is good. and its not like they've stopped their old stuff, i'm going to see them at download, and they'll definitely do the classics like rasputin and battle metal, but i'm dying to see this song live! going to be epic, especially with 50,000 people singing along in the choir sections!
@HerrUhyre really? i'd actually say this one is much better, but i think thats more b/c of the very synthy sounding orchestra in the last two albums. Using a real orchestra and choir really helped this album imo :)
@metfankrizz revolution. hence the name 'end of an empire' people standing up to people like napolean and alexander the great and destroying their empire. look up the lyrics and u'll get a better idea
@HerrUhyre Really? I think this is by far much better than the first two! The lyrics are historically correct and interesting, and their real musical talent is better represented on Stand up and fight than Battle metal or The varangian way. But this is ofcourse just my opinion. :)
@HerrUhyre I have to agree, while its not a total waste, I feels as though they really missed the mark conceptually, and to some extent musically.
