I have to say tone king it sounds like a fart in a bathtub, that is not my idea of enjoying music man, I am not a marshal fan at all, but their class 5 sounds way better than this
@Mbmoney1217 the champ xd is not as good as a vintage vibrochamp, but it is way better than this bugera, the bugera amps are just rip offs of other amp basically, they don't have their own sig tone they just seem to sound like other amp types, I would stick with the fender champ xd mate as it has a much nicer clean tone and it has more effects if that is what U are after, and seen as the reverb on the v5 is digital as well I would go with the fender, the marshal class 5 sounds like an old plexi
@jdh0858 this amp is much better, my brother has this amp and i have the vox and im so jealous.... this one sounds much better than the vox can ever hope for
I have a Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb and a Pro Junior, but I live in an apt. and really need a smaller practice amp (especially with a headphone out). Based on comments I've read, as well as your review, I think this will fit the bill. Thanks.
I bought one of these for a small practice amp. I was just jackin around with it and plugged it into a palamino 212 cab and it sounded great with my strat, and my 335 as well as my lp, but the bigest suprise was my Martin D28 fitted with a LR Baggs M1 passive. WOW!!! This thing kills my peavey ecoustic 112. All my pickin buddies agree this is a fantastic acoustic amp run thru a 212 cab. Who da thunk it.

Nice clean review. Thanks. I've a question. Is there any point in changing the pre-amp valve on one of these for an old Mullard (for example)? Would it make any difference?
hi, nice playing tone king, i bought yesterday same amp, it looks and sounds really nice. But i got a prob, after 30-40 min rocking the tubes start to rattle, ringing on some notes. It disappears when i turn off the amp for 15min. Did i pick up a broken one or is it normal with the stock tubes?
@bonscott2598 while it could be a tube, the problem is most likely a problem that most tube combo amps suffer from. The problem is probably because the tubes are in the same space to the speaker, and they are very close to the speaker. The speaker is rattling the tubes, causing them to make that sound. If you want to read more about it, eurotubes has a nice page for it.
Great man! Really helps out with reviews like this! Great amp though! Actually, I think I'm going to buy this V5 today! Tried it yesterday, and it's hella good sound to my ears!
Bugera V5 Has an 4 Ohm output Impedance "ONLY" read from product specifications. This 4 Ohm output is an low impedance and not the normal 8 Ohm. You referenced an multiple tap output in your video please correct so many uninformed viewers will not be misinformed. Thanks for the demo. TurTek
Does this thing take pedals very well? I play literally all styles of music and I wanted to know if I could use a Blackstar HT-DistX to cover the heavier genres
Awesome Video! Im in the market for my first tube amp and you've sold me on this. The power attenuater is a must in my house because my neighbors are fed up with my peavey vypyr 15 watt, so running at .1 watt will shut 'em up. Very good job at showcasing the different sounds with the volume and gain adjustments, as well as the different pickups and attenuation settings. Thank you.
When u crank the master full and set the gain to preference, will u get some real power tube saturation? Would this handle band practice with no mic on the full 5 watts?
@hgmcc Thx for the kind words kgm. Thx for also being concerned on how I feed my kids :-). I know ... tought to believe ... but yes, I do have a job and do work for a living. Not sure why that's a tough one for people to figure out, but in my life, nothing comes without having to work for it. No trust funds here ;-). Rock on brother. Thx for tuning in.
let me start by saying great review of the product BUT... why are you not using a microphone on these amps. the camera barley gives us viewers a clue of what these amps sound like
Let me start this off with one of these bad boys !..! When i first started watching your videos i thought you were a annoying ass Yankee, and then i realized about 2 videos later that i was addicted to your reviews. Bugera is an awesome and a kick ass dude. Please keep doing what your doing, you just got a new subscriber!
So much of rock music is played on the BRIDGE pickup. It's really hard to get a feel for the overdrive/distortion tones of the amp with the muffled sound of the neck pickup.
A comment for the metal heads (or fusion jazz players) out there looking for a practice amp.
Open back combos usually sounds harsh and messy when gain is added and are not usually tunned.
I have a nicely designed 1x12 tunned open back that does not give that boxy sound and it does not sacrifice low end :o)
A speaker box/cabinet should be designed for the speaker, so placing an awesome speaker in a box which is designed for another speaker (or not designed at all) may not give its full potential.
you should talk less and crank the amp faster. no one really wants to hear what tube amps sound like in the 1-5 range on the amp. Also I notices your tone always ends up super bassy and muddy in your videos, maybe it's just me..
hey one quick question ttk, when it says 4 omh minimum, does that mean i can only run it into a 4 ohm cab, or could i power a bugera 16 ohm cab with it for example?
Appreciate the effort that went into this review. Thank you. However, to those of you (us) interested in this amp, fair warning that there are alleged quality-control problems with these amps. Still tempting for 150, just do your research first.....
Thanks for the interesting demo!, I got to get myself one of those and try it through my old Laney 2x12 with horn....it's a PA speaker to be honest but it is amazing for guitar...thanks again
For real, man. Super helpful video. Keep up the good work. What's that riff you're playing at the 5 minute mark...that from a song or did you just make that up?
For real, man. Super helpful video. Keep up the good work. What's that riff you're playing at the 5 minute mark...that from a song or did you just make that up?
Nice vid... I really like the tone and it's amazing that this little guy has reverb and attenuation built in for that price. Two questions: Is the reverb a true spring reverb? And... If you plug in an external cabinet does the internal speaker need to be disconnected or are there two outputs so you can have both?
I love the way this amp looks, I like the 3-way attenuator. The ONLY beef I have with this amp is the 8" speaker, but, since it has the speaker connected with a plug-in cable, you can add a cabinet of you choice. So, since it has a speaker output, the beef aint so big a deal. Really thinking about buying this amp.
I've heard bad stuff about these. I went to ask about it at the local music store and they just stopped carrying these because they're unreliable and actually dangerous. Apparently some guy came in cause his started shooting sparks on stage.. and they have horrible support supposedly. they wont fix their own amps.
Sorry, but did you ever get in contact with them? I bet you did not. And all this "I heard of someone that" blahblah...what about giving it a try? Do your own test, and then talk about the stuff.
Hm. It's what they say...but what I guess: The store does not make enough profit with a Bugera...they earn more money by selling other, more expensive stuff.
I'll have to check out the Bugera V5. I would love to hear how it sounds on .1 watt with the volume maxed and the gain below 12:00. I wonder how close it will get to a bedroom plexi. I looked for a video of the Marshall Class 5. Have you done one? I love to see what you think of the build quality of the Class 5, there seem to be a lot of negative reviews about rattles etc.
the reason chicks would like it because it looks like a sports car. cream leather, black carpet/trim, and a name that could easily be confused with Bugatti
Terrible sound, like it's buried under several blankets, I was hoping for a nice clean sound from this amp, even the drive was rough, after hearing the Vox AC4TV I doubt it can match the Vox.
I bought a Bugera V5 I had to return 2 before I got one that actually worked correctly. I put a Weber 8" alnico blue in it and put Mullard VOS reissue tubes in it and wow what a little tone machine. Do these mods and turn it into an extrodinary little amp for 150 bones.
how about it "Imshr" im a proud owner of the v22. Amazing value. I ran an attenuator through the effects loop and cranked the master. i then a/b'd it with my ptp jtm45. agreed its not the same voice however the bugera absolutely holds its own. 350 vs 2000. ...peace
Bugera makes good amps however they also make crappy ones. Quality controll problems. I had to order and return 2 before I got a good one. If you get a good one it is a great amp dollar for dollar they can not be beat.
Hello Tone King, Thank you for all the detailed and useful reviews that you have posted until now, Could you also review the Laney Cub 10? Just Curious how is it, Anyone opinions on that Amp?
Hey, I'd just like to say thanks for all your shootouts and reviews.
Quite a few people have commented asking about the metal tones on this, and if there even are any without a pedal(blech) and I know you doon't have time to make a whole other video, and it doesn't seem like your style..but it would be nice to know if these will satisfy my needs before I drop $350 on the v22. Thanks. Oh..and one more thing - how is the tone different between the v5 and the v22?
Nice, I was thinking about getting a small tube amp into my appartment, so thanks for the little amptest. Sure, you can't hear all the nuances of the play, but it sounds good. How loud is it overall? Much less then a 12w trand you'd say?
Could you do a Bugera V5 vs epi Valve Junior combo please. Im looking for a small 5watt combo to mess about with similar to the epi but with the added features like reverb and attenation switch and would like to see if they are similar or if the bugera is better. Whats your opinion? I already own a Tiny Terror and a Marshall TSL212Cab so would hook up to that at home and play through the internal when out.
Hey TTK, I love your reviews. Can you compare this thing to the Peavey Valveking Royal 8? It's going for a hundred bucks now on MusiciansFriend/Music123, and nobody seems to have done a proper review. For a bargain basement price like that, you gotta tell us what you think :)
Bugera make some cool stuff for the cash. I got the V55HD head which I am using with a 2X12 cab I made with Jensen C12R's. Superb blues combination. I love it. If you are looking to buy any amp, check out the Bugera version, could save yourdself a heap of cash.
no it wont carry well in a rock band setting with a drummer. its mainly a recording and practice amp but even 5w in the tube world is kinda loud in some bedroom, it depends though.
Well RNRDOLL, what do you think about Roland Cube15x(I play with drums)? I am greatly in need of new amp that is not too big, not too expensive. Do you have any suggestion?
how much are you looking to spend, because tube amps are getting more affordable these days. Take a look at the blackheart handsome devil combo, the tiny terror, the lower wattage Bugera combos...there are many options.
thanks for reply. My budget is $250 at most... after all, this is 'temporary' amp while my Fender The Twin (2 x 12") is waiting for repair. But I also need a small amp for small gigs or jams, so... I want something pretty decent. I looked at Blackheart and Bugera V22, but they are out of my budget... or is it worth spending that amount?
250 bucks...easy...peavey windsor! Fuck, you need a combo though. that'll be harder because combos tend to be more expensive than heads. If you can find a used b52 at212 combo, get that--60 watts and brand NEW they are 300 something, and used they tend to be in the 200s. Very inexpensive amps and hi quality. They're another underdog brand
Hey Tone King, Thanks for the in-depth video review of this amp. As I already love my Bugera 333XL, (the matching 4-12 was a must have!) I was interested in seeing if the V5 was worth buying. Your review has convinced me to look into this amp a bit further. Thanx! Ace
I wasnt impressed with the Bugera speakers. Celestions are a far better match. I played the 333XL combo, I didnt like it much. I know the amp it self is good. The speakers DIDN'T do it for me.
I played a V55H thru a V30 Marshall quad, BIG difference! VERY nice!
Y'know, I've played 70's JMP Marshalls w/ 30w Celestions in a 4-12 for years, THe Celestions just didn't sound as good w/ the 333XL, but plugged into the Bugera 4-12 w/ 4 50w Bugera speakers, it sprang to life! That matched set is the way to go. Also, bought the V5, & it's purely a bedroom amp. On 10 it's still not very loud. Great for mic'ing up for recording, though.Reminded me of a tweed Fender Deluxe.
IF you're replying to racerfreeds comment, then your comment is quite stupid. A lot of old metal was done on amps like the plexi with a pedal infront, SS amps aren't metal amps, they're just cheaper more modern alternative amps, most metal bands (even the shitty modern ones) use tube amps.
I too would like to hear this amp with a nice crunchy overdrive infront of it
Why can't they put an effects loop in it? How hard could it be! These 5 watt tube amps are awesome for miked gigs. I bought a Crate V58 just because it has an effects loop and I love it! I would like to buy another 5 watt tube amp, but without the effects loop... it's kinda useless to me.
Hey TK, thanks for all your efforts! One suggestion: It's OK to "fiddle with the tone" in the demos. I think it's helpful to hear the responsiveness that's available in a particular amp, especially when there's only one tone knob available. On this amp, leaving the tone at 12 O'clock leaves it sounding muddy to me. \m/
That one sucks too, I also owned it. You have to crank the volume and you only get a slight amount of gain, and even that is muddy and unusable. I guess it's good if you plan on using a pedal with it. Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead using any kind of distortion pedal.
If you had to make room in the lounge by chucking the V5 or the Vox ac4tv, which would have to go...Or if you had little to no room or money, and loved Skynyrd, Bad Company & the like, which would you recommend? Thanks for all the great info.
Good question. I'll answer it with an honest answer. I just sold my 15w Vypyr modeling amp to make room for the V5. The V5 is pretty cool. The Vox is okay. Frankly speaking - I don't like the way the Vox looks. Hope that helps.
Doesn't it sound boxy?

I love the way this amp looks, I like the 3-way attenuator. The ONLY beef I have with this amp is the 8" speaker, but, since it has the speaker connected with a plug-in cable, you can add a cabinet of you choice. So, since it has a speaker output, the beef aint so big a deal. Really thinking about buying this amp.

I thinking 'bout gettin one - it is cheap and seems to be ok. if it fizzed out I would just-hopefully-get new tubes

I've heard bad stuff about these. I went to ask about it at the local music store and they just stopped carrying these because they're unreliable and actually dangerous. Apparently some guy came in cause his started shooting sparks on stage.. and they have horrible support supposedly. they wont fix their own amps.
hvrock13 2 years ago
Sorry, but did you ever get in contact with them? I bet you did not. And all this "I heard of someone that" blahblah...what about giving it a try? Do your own test, and then talk about the stuff.
WhizzlerOne 2 years ago 2
I'd say it's pretty good proof that they're not very reliable amps when a local music store has to discontinue carrying them because of complaints.
hvrock13 2 years ago
@hvrock13
Hm. It's what they say...but what I guess: The store does not make enough profit with a Bugera...they earn more money by selling other, more expensive stuff.

I've heard the same said about Mesa Boogies.

if I am going to plug into a 4x12, is the v22 worth the extra $200 over the v5?

i suggest that you setup a separate audio input and mix it rather using the camera's mic. so that we all may get benefitted wit more clarity. cheers!

How does it sounds with an Overdrive/Dist Pedal?

i use either a bad monkey and or a fulltone fulldrive 2 through the clean channel. its very good. not great mind you, but very good.

Do you really expect a camcorder mic to give you crystal-clear sound?
tombolo191 2 years ago 14
Terrible sound, like it's buried under several blankets, I was hoping for a nice clean sound from this amp, even the drive was rough, after hearing the Vox AC4TV I doubt it can match the Vox.

I bought a Bugera V5 I had to return 2 before I got one that actually worked correctly. I put a Weber 8" alnico blue in it and put Mullard VOS reissue tubes in it and wow what a little tone machine. Do these mods and turn it into an extrodinary little amp for 150 bones.
j12elliott 2 years ago
how about it "Imshr" im a proud owner of the v22.

Just Curious how is it, Anyone opinions on that Amp?
aryasridhar 2 years ago
Hey, I'd just like to say thanks for all your shootouts and reviews.
Quite a few people have commented asking about the metal tones on this, and if there even are any without a pedal(blech) and I know you doon't have time to make a whole other video, and it doesn't seem like your style..but it would be nice to know if these will satisfy my needs before I drop $350 on the v22. Thanks. Oh..and one more thing - how is the tone different between the v5 and the v22?
Thanks.

I just ordered my V5 today from Musicians Friend, I can not wait to get it. Bugera has been putting out great stuff at reasonable prices.

Wow this could be my next buy. Would love to hear this amp with a TS or SD9 as well.

Nice, I was thinking about getting a small tube amp into my appartment, so thanks for the little amptest. Sure, you can't hear all the nuances of the play, but it sounds good. How loud is it overall? Much less then a 12w trand you'd say?
MultiParasite 2 years ago
Could you do a Bugera V5 vs epi Valve Junior combo please. Im looking for a small 5watt combo to mess about with similar to the epi but with the added features like reverb and attenation switch and would like to see if they are similar or if the bugera is better. Whats your opinion? I already own a Tiny Terror and a Marshall TSL212Cab so would hook up to that at home and play through the internal when out.
Cheers

Hey TTK, I love your reviews. Can you compare this thing to the Peavey Valveking Royal 8? It's going for a hundred bucks now on MusiciansFriend/Music123, and nobody seems to have done a proper review. For a bargain basement price like that, you gotta tell us what you think :)

Bugera make some cool stuff for the cash. I got the V55HD head which I am using with a 2X12 cab I made with Jensen C12R's. Superb blues combination. I love it. If you are looking to buy any amp, check out the Bugera version, could save yourdself a heap of cash.

Is this amp loud enough to play with drums and bass(in basement of house)? or just for bed-room practice?
bluebearbank247 2 years ago
no it wont carry well in a rock band setting with a drummer. its mainly a recording and practice amp but even 5w in the tube world is kinda loud in some bedroom, it depends though.
RNRDOLL 2 years ago
Well RNRDOLL, what do you think about Roland Cube15x(I play with drums)? I am greatly in need of new amp that is not too big, not too expensive. Do you have any suggestion?
bluebearbank247 2 years ago
how much are you looking to spend, because tube amps are getting more affordable these days. Take a look at the blackheart handsome devil combo, the tiny terror, the lower wattage Bugera combos...there are many options.
RNRDOLL 2 years ago
thanks for reply. My budget is $250 at most... after all, this is 'temporary' amp while my Fender The Twin (2 x 12") is waiting for repair. But I also need a small amp for small gigs or jams, so... I want something pretty decent. I looked at Blackheart and Bugera V22, but they are out of my budget... or is it worth spending that amount?
bluebearbank247 2 years ago
250 bucks...easy...peavey windsor! Fuck, you need a combo though. that'll be harder because combos tend to be more expensive than heads. If you can find a used b52 at212 combo, get that--60 watts and brand NEW they are 300 something, and used they tend to be in the 200s. Very inexpensive amps and hi quality. They're another underdog brand
RNRDOLL 2 years ago
they're supposed to have alot of problems....
ruffles272 2 years ago
i got the bugera v22... definitely worth it. Great amp.
ruffles272 2 years ago
I used this amp with two other guitarists and a drummer, and made myself heard easily with the gain maxed and the volume at 7 or 8.
tombolo191 2 years ago
Hey Tone King, Thanks for the in-depth video review of this amp. As I already love my Bugera 333XL, (the matching 4-12 was a must have!) I was interested in seeing if the V5 was worth buying. Your review has convinced me to look into this amp a bit further. Thanx! Ace
acesteele 2 years ago
I wasnt impressed with the Bugera speakers. Celestions are a far better match. I played the 333XL combo, I didnt like it much. I know the amp it self is good. The speakers DIDN'T do it for me.
I played a V55H thru a V30 Marshall quad, BIG difference! VERY nice!
ace69er 2 years ago
Y'know, I've played 70's JMP Marshalls w/ 30w Celestions in a 4-12 for years, THe Celestions just didn't sound as good w/ the 333XL, but plugged into the Bugera 4-12 w/ 4 50w Bugera speakers, it sprang to life! That matched set is the way to go. Also, bought the V5, & it's purely a bedroom amp. On 10 it's still not very loud. Great for mic'ing up for recording, though.Reminded me of a tweed Fender Deluxe.
acesteele 2 years ago
Yeah its possible i guess. I owned the Marhsall 73 JMP quad for nearly 20 years too,
Sounded great. Sold it to a metal play who cant stop jerking over it.
But yeah the V5 is prob modeled on a Delux or a Little Champ type thing.
ace69er 2 years ago
can you show what this amp will do with a distortion / metal pedal in front of it?
racerfreed 2 years ago
Oh please! Go back to kindergarten!
This is NOT that type of amp!
Stick to SS!
ace69er 2 years ago
IF you're replying to racerfreeds comment, then your comment is quite stupid. A lot of old metal was done on amps like the plexi with a pedal infront, SS amps aren't metal amps, they're just cheaper more modern alternative amps, most metal bands (even the shitty modern ones) use tube amps.
I too would like to hear this amp with a nice crunchy overdrive infront of it
J3sst44 2 years ago
NO its not. This is NOT a bout Plexi amps!
This is about 5w Class A, vintage style sound of a bugera.
I meant its NOT that TYPE of amp that you would WANT to defile with transistor clipping in a class A amp~!
I know about Plexis and yeah youre right, most old metal and hard rock bands all used plexi amps back in the 60s & 70s!
ace69er 2 years ago
Fine, put a valve preamp infront of it.
I was mainly referring to the bit which said "Go back to SS"
Solid state amps belong in the garbage.
J3sst44 2 years ago
I agree totally. I am NOT arguing with you! SS amps HAVE their place:(the BIN) An extra valve pre pedal would be fine with this amp.
MY comment for him to go BACK to a SS amp, was a bit of sarcasm! like 'If THATS the ype of sound you WANT, stick to your transistor amps'!
That is what I meant!
ace69er 2 years ago
If i want a metal sound, would the v5 and a pedal be better then a SS amp?
racerfreed 2 years ago
Yes of course it would! BUT, if you decide to do this, GET a valve pedal not a transistor 1. Blackstar make a set of 12AX7 powered OD pedals.
I tried a V55H today and it was very tasty indeed. NOT metal not but had a very respectable drive stage.
I got some very nice sounds with it plugged into a Marshall quad loaded with V30 speakers!
ace69er 2 years ago
Yes.
xHnKx 2 years ago
Why can't they put an effects loop in it? How hard could it be! These 5 watt tube amps are awesome for miked gigs. I bought a Crate V58 just because it has an effects loop and I love it! I would like to buy another 5 watt tube amp, but without the effects loop... it's kinda useless to me.
Firebird3509576 2 years ago
Hey TK, thanks for all your efforts! One suggestion: It's OK to "fiddle with the tone" in the demos. I think it's helpful to hear the responsiveness that's available in a particular amp, especially when there's only one tone knob available. On this amp, leaving the tone at 12 O'clock leaves it sounding muddy to me. \m/
RockCityWear 2 years ago
you ever played the 5w valve king junior combo amp? if so do you like this or that better?
AcousticTransmission 2 years ago
The 5w valveking SUCKS! Don't wast your money. I had one but I hated it so much I sold it.
IrishAmericanPride 2 years ago
sorry i dint mean valve king, i meant just valve junior by epi.
AcousticTransmission 2 years ago
That one sucks too, I also owned it. You have to crank the volume and you only get a slight amount of gain, and even that is muddy and unusable. I guess it's good if you plan on using a pedal with it. Personally, I wouldn't be caught dead using any kind of distortion pedal.
IrishAmericanPride 2 years ago
so ive heard, but i use a ds-1
AcousticTransmission 2 years ago
im lookin for my first valve amp and this one seems like the est one for the price i have seen. its £129. would you reccomend it?
sonydragonmaker 2 years ago
If you had to make room in the lounge by chucking the V5 or the Vox ac4tv, which would have to go...Or if you had little to no room or money, and loved Skynyrd, Bad Company & the like, which would you recommend? Thanks for all the great info.
xkxlxkx 2 years ago
Good question. I'll answer it with an honest answer. I just sold my 15w Vypyr modeling amp to make room for the V5. The V5 is pretty cool. The Vox is okay. Frankly speaking - I don't like the way the Vox looks. Hope that helps.
