economy picking is when you do this Down up Down Down

Yeah alternate picking is up down up down up down but Economy picking is usually for scales which have 3 notes per string and it'll be down up down down up down down up down. Or Up Down Up Up Down Up etc.

Economy picking doesn't just have to be used for scales, it's basicly just finding the most efficient method, as pure alternate picking can have downsides. In a normal thrre-note-per-string scale, if you were to alternate pick every other string you would be jumping over a whole string. If you go down up down, your pick is already on the other side of the string ready to go down up down again. So you end up with doown up down down up down, and vice versa coming up the scale

Sweep picking also kinda counts although it sorta has a category all of its own. If you were to alternate pick an arpeggio it would be quite hard to play fluently, if you sweep it's all in one action
