Yum! My aunt has been making that same cake but with Amaretto for as long as I can remember. The Captain is a nice alternative, I'll have to give that a try.
Cool video YP! I just had an idea for your family cookbook. Maybe during the dark of winter you and your daughters could transcribe those old recipes onto a printable page and then insert both the new page and the original hand written recipe cards in an acetate sheet like your wife's book. One side is an easy to read version, the other side is the original treasure. Sort of an organization/preservation effort. Happy New Year!
Yankee, this was hilarious! Thanks for sharing. Rum cake is my absolute favorite from my Mother as well and I taught my daughters to cook it. Love the vid. Being Cajun and living in Louisiana from a big Catholic family, I have been cooking since I was a child and consider it a must skill, whether cooking game, canning, etc. I enjoyed the Christmas vid where you fried up a batch of Cafe D' benets. Awesome! Keep up the good work.
Made 11 of them as gifts for Christmas instead of Made in China crap. Next year, instead of buying gifts my family is going to exchange homemade things(wine, beer, bread, etc. I'll be doing the cakes again) and it will be the first MADE IN THE USA Christmas in a long time. Well if it all doesn't come falling down right before hand. Everyone loved the recipe, I topped mine with a caramel glaze and Heath English toffee. Thank you for the wonderful recipe Yankeeprepper.
@03SSMontecarlo HOLY BUCKETS!! 11!! That is what my wife and I have been doing the last few years too. All homemade stuff. Preserves, jellies, garden goods, roasted coffee. I bring these cakes and wine to every party I get invited too and it's always a hit. Thanks for the comment man, that was cool.
Maked the rum cake for family for Christmas, turned out wonderful. very light and fluffy cake. Thank you for sharing this recipe. Family loved it. This will be on the list of things to bake for Christmas. Thank you, and Happy New Year. Preppers rule!!
Hey Yankee, I made the or more version of rum and used a banana instant pudding mix and it was awesome. I had to put my cake on the floor when I poked it with the bayonet cause my gun butt kept hitting the ceiling. Bersides that it was truly a great cake. p.s. can you do a vid on plastering sometine.
Hey Yankee. You're the best when it comes to my favorite youtube channel guys. Thanks my friend and have a very Merry Christmas. All the best to you and your family in this upcoming New Year.
Good to see a man in the kitchen showing how easy it is to take care of the family! And what a great P.E.T. cake cover you got there. Is that the 10GS? Thanks for sharing and thanks for the recipe!
@SultanOfShinola no, a 10gs is 10 inches in diameter and the S stands for "short" or 3 1/2 inches tall. The one in the vid comes off our AF line. And is 5 1/2 inches tall (no s)
The original owner named it all, I just bought it. We can make things as large as basement window covers as well, down to those small clam shells that you curse trying to open on Christmas.
@Yankeeprepper Oh, I hate those clam shell packages that all my favorite electronic gadgets come in! If I don't cut my finger off with my knife cutting the plastic open, I usually poke my eye out trying to sniff the circuitry. Maybe I should wait until I get it all the way out of the clam shell!
Take care, Merry Christmas, and death to the Flip-floppers!
I did have question for you , do I put my Mosin Bayonet on the top rack or bottom rack in my dishwasher . ( I just couldn't help myself ) , nice vid !
the greatest chefs in the world are all men. the jury is still out on Julia??? Merry Christmas to you and yours Yankee. thank you for the recipes, tried the marmalade that you put out last yr and loved it.
Your description says 1/2 cup of rum in both the rum mix and the cake mix, but I didnt see you add any rum in the cake mix. I bought everything and I dont wanna mess it up. Let me know! Thanks man... glad to see you back!
Looks good i will be tryin this for Christmas eve this year it looks way better then my aunts fruit cake lol may you and your family have a very merry Christmas God Bless
OMG......Brother. There is only a quarter of that thing left. I am making one to bring to my family feast on Christmas eve. Thanks again for the recipe. Be Safe
@TheHossUSMC oh no, no, no, noooooo. The specified ingrediants are INFO or SPECS. Definitely NOT instructions. Instructions are how to operate or put something together. Info and Instructions are totally different. For example: Being a man, I naturally would never read the vehicle manual on how to operate it. BUT, I would check the info or specs on how much oil it takes or how much fuel it holds. Even if it's a rocket, a real man would just push buttons until something happens.
weve got a good dessert in wales bread pudding its delicious and very cheap and uses up all the stale bread you and the kids will love it give it a try .
@red88ization My mothers side is WELSH!! ( and yes I can sing!) The True Brits!! My mum served bread pudding every Christmas and my family continues to do so as well...with the roast beast of course. Merry Christmas!!

@Clamburger100 LMAO!! Ok, that was pretty funny. You might be salvagable after all. (Still belly laughing writing this) The funny thing is, I don't know if you are kidding, I have seen some asshats on here with at least a dozen channels.....
Mosin bayonette free with purchase of 99$ rifle. Piercing rum cake with bayonette as my wife sneers priceless. Thanks for the recipe and time, merry Christmas Yankee.
This is one of my all time favorites, I just don't want to look for a recipe, because that would be sorta like reading directions LOL and we know how we read directions(sorry still laughing). Thanks so much for the video, awesome stuff and I'll memorize the ingredients hopefully.
Bro! Save me a piece...lol Looks good brother gonna try that soon. More rum the better.. Thanks for sharing bro and a Merry Christmas to you and yours..
@yankeeprepper MMMmmmm. Rum Cake!!! It's really not all that surprising that you would bake a cake. It turned out pretty well. Watching you struggle with the mold I was reminded of my grandmother complaining when Crisco changed their product and all her old recipes didn't quite work right after that. She used to use lard before crisco though. I have to admit that you are one multi talented guy. You have yourself a Merry Christmas!
Couldn't wait had to make it tonight. I will do a short video tomorrow when we cut it after it sets overnight. It looks and smells Awesome!....Thanks for the recipe. Be safe
As the host of a cooking show here on You Tube you did a great great job with the rum cake with a prepper twist. Cooking is not just for women and my husband Mike is also a good cook in his own right and is my video guy and editor for my channel as well as making videos for his gun channel and enjoys prepping too.

cant believe you gave your kids rum cake i didnt have my first bite of rum cake tell i was 23. but it not a big deal besides rum cake is good so who cares. keep the stomachs full and the fingers on the triggers.

You did the right thing regarding that mold. Real men don't read instructions. In fact, some might question your manhood, in that you used a recipe at all. The manly thing to do is wing it, going just by whatever you remember or can guess. For those ingredients you can't recall, substitute a real man's ingredients: blood, sweat, and tears. Not your own tears, because real men don't cry, but the tears of those you made to suffer so that the cake may become possible.

GOOD ONE YANKEE. I HAVE MY LATE MOMS AND GRANDMAS COOK BOOKS. SOME RECIPIES ARE IN THEIR ON HAND WRITING STILL. I'LL HAVE TO TRY THE RUM CAKE, BUT ALSO COME ON MAN, DON'T YOU START READING THEM INSTRUCTIONS NOW !MAN UP....THE BEST..
@SuperJcollins LOL! I didn't read 'em bro! When I told my wife how it stuck, she told me: "the instructions said to butter the pan..." I had to remind her, I don't read instructions., I don't have too....I am a MAN. And it turned out just fine. LOL!
I come from a family full of bakers. My Uncle was a baker by trade for 40 years. My Dad and Grandfather were the ones who did the holiday baking, not the wives. Baking was, and still should be, considered a skilled trade that mostly men held positions in not too long ago. I am proud that I can bake, and do other things that a lot of men in todays society won't do. Good on ya for baking a cake. Keep it up.
@boomd1791 My first introduction to bakers, was when I purchased my first business. I bought two coffee shops here in Minnesota about 10 years ago. I had 2 different vendors provide baked goods for the stores, ( bagel, donuts, cakes, pies etc.) These people get up at 3am and start their day 6 days week and deliver my good by 5-5:30am everyday. Most, like your story, have been baking for generations and are some of the hardest working small business owners I have ever met.
@boomd1791 I was wearing my zip side desert combat boots during this activity. However, while the cake was baking I went outside to take off and soak a carburator from a CRR2000, split a pile of wood, and get the eggs from the hen house. Regular work boots would have sufficed in this case, but I wanted to be ready head stomp and asshat if I had too.
@TheGrayman1234 If you can't cook, you can not take care of yourself. Some can take care of themselves better than others. And the best Men, can take care of others too. I can help you eat the Red Velvet cake! (don't forget to grease the pan!!)
Thanks for sharing, I'm definitely making one this weekend. I don't have a fancy cake cover like that one, though. I guess I'll have to eat it quick so it doesn't get stale. If you haven't already seen it you should watch the youtube video of Jim Gaffigan's standup comedy about cakes.
YUMMY!!! Glad to see you back at making some cool videos!!! I've been teaching my hubby on how to cook on his big truck in his lunchbox stove. He is doing pretty good. Merry Christmas from our family to yours!!!
Asking your kids "Who wants cake" expected answer received!! One important question though, will the bayonet from an M44 work, or is it better to use the 91/30? Thanks!
Looks great thanks for sharing a piece of your families heritage with us, oh and by the way my Aunts Rottencrothche's Fruit cake is pretty ok too. lol Have a Blessed Christmas.
good video yankee my wife doesnt let me cook much now aparently i make a mess lol.happy christmas to you and youre family from me & mine hae a guid yin
@bereansteward It seems as though all the Captain Morgan Rum bottles have some kind of manufacturer defect. They leak or there is an evaporation issue. I have not been able to do a test on longevity on Rum because of this defect.
I laughed so hard when I saw you use the bayonnette! I will have to stick with a bamboo skewer. Thank you for clearing that up. I am going to make this cake. It looks fab! Thanks for sharing your family recipe. At Christmas it is important to have special things like this to share. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Noreen : )
that looks fantastic. I've got to try to make this for a Christmas party this weekend. My mother had made up a cookbook years ago also - it's some of the best meals & memories I still have today.

Asking your kids "Who wants cake" expected answer received!! One important question though, will the bayonet from an M44 work, or is it better to use the 91/30? Thanks!

How long is the shelf life of the spiced rum after you open it?
bereansteward 2 months ago
@bereansteward It seems as though all the Captain Morgan Rum bottles have some kind of manufacturer defect. They leak or there is an evaporation issue. I have not been able to do a test on longevity on Rum because of this defect.

that looks fantastic. I've got to try to make this for a Christmas party this weekend. My mother had made up a cookbook years ago also - it's some of the best meals & memories I still have today.
