  • Ummm there's no way that you talk in a different accent like that and are not conscious of it.

  • DUDE,are you serious with fake accent?!?!?Is that what believing in XENU the EVIL GALACTIC WARLORD for 30 years does to you..And dont say you dont believe in XENU because in another interview you said you STILL LOVE $cientology...The only problem you had was the Disconnection,Communication, and the LIES...So your STILL A WACKO!!!HAIL XENU...You NUT JOB...Tell XENU I said HELLO...Bwahahaha

  • Tory, you are a linguistic Zelig!

  • they used sound editors to make her accent change. it isnt a big deal. That's what they have to do with CNN productions because it is a wordwide company and we probably wouldnt be able to understand people who barley understand english if they talk in their normal accent

  • There is not millions of members in the cult of scientology. There is around 5 - 10.000 all in all internationally.

  • Thats not very smart, you have invited a person who only can speak english and you are just sitting there talking norwegian, thats kind of impersonal, not nice and childish.

  • LOL Tory! That accent is realistically fake.

  • @b1p0l4rt Agreed!!! The TOTALLY Weirdest part is Honestly, *I* did not know I was talking that way, until I got back to the USA---and on ARS ( a newsgroup), people were asking, "What's up with that accent?" I was in my home, going "huh"? Then I heard it and nearly died. I called Andreas to ask if I was talking like that. He said, 'uh huh". Jeesh. Others told me some people when they travel have the same problem re accents. Best :) Tory/Magoo

  • @ToryMagoo44 I have the same problem. I spend 10 minutes with my dad, and I sound like I'm a hayseed. Isn't that weird?

  • @b1p0l4rt TOTALLY!!! *I* did not even know I was speaking like that...until I got back to the USA. I went onto

the Net....onto ARS...and my friends were saying, "What is that weird accent?" I had no idea what they were talking about. It's embarrassing to me, to this day, that I'm talking like that. I had no idea. Still glad I did the interview...the information, aside from the weirdo accent, is true. Love to ALL :) AND LOVE NORWAY!!!!

  • Hilarious how Tory gave herself an accent for the interview. Hilarious.

  • lolaccent

  • "they prey on young people" Yes, that's exactly what any cult does - they've learned well from one of the most successful cults - Christianity.

  • why does she speak with that accent?

maybe she picked it up from talking with so many different people overseas?

  • Yay! Norway! WHOO!

HAIL LORD XENU! DOWN WITH SCIENTOLOGY!

  • Greetings: This is an interesting video. Thank you for posting it.

There is one point I wanted to touch on. It was when the woman said that: "Religions don't generally try to get you to disconnect from your family". I can name one that wasn't mentioned here which does. It's called The Watchtower Bible and Tract Society. Instead of "disconnect", they say: "Disfellowship". Reference: William Schnell's THIRTY YEARS A WATCHTOWER SLAVE. Thank you again. --Nik

  • You're so right. The WT is... you know :) Take care!

  • I presume that she is speaking English in a Norwegian accent to be more easily understood. When I speak with my broad Irish accent Americans find it a bit hard to understand me,so I switch to American English with a slight accent also.Thats the way to be understood if you are a foreigner

  • oh thats interesting

  • I found the accent a bit weird but, honestly after about a week myself in Norway and coming back I find myself sometimes speaking in a lilt to which i got odd looks from people. Have to say her accent is spot on.

  • right, wtf

  • I don't know why they bothered translating what Tory said. Nearly all Norwegians understand English very well.

  • Why does Tory talk broken english?

  • The Norwegian accent in english is a very prominent one, and when a native speaker hears an accent like that, they sometimes borrow it or pick it up. You do it subconsciously, and probably because you want the other part to understand you.

  • Probably to keep it simple for the audience who understand little English.

  • The accent comes naturally as you're immersed in a community that uses the sounds, because the brain adjusts to situations very quickly. Just listening to radio programs in US english often makes me pick up sounds from it.

  • I'm from up north, but when I visit the south I find I easily slip into a southern accent very quickly. It's as if I were born with a mint julep in hand. :)

  • I go to Newfoundland a lot, and I start talking like a Newfie after about 1 week, and like a 'real' newfie after 2 weeks. Its crazy.

  • If you are in a foreign country for long enough, the accent isn't difficult to pick up. You notice as she continues talking it starts to fade.

  • yes, please explain the accent she's using...

  • yeah, the accent, why the need to perform? still, agree with everything she said.

  • i wonder why youre using a norweigan accent if you have people translating for you

  • 6 months later.

Tory is a super SP. =Super person with super power.

  • BLÆH. Den Norske såkalte eksperten aner virkelig ikke hva hun snakker om.

Hun må være BETALT, eller truet av scientology kirken.

  • why is she speaking with a norwegian english accent? wierd!! but I am happy she is speaking out!

  • Just goes to show how easily she can be brain-washed :)

  • She has that accent down to a tee thanks to her ex-husband. Guess this was the only place she could bust it out.

  • yeah that is kinda weird but maybe it is because the norweigians wouldnt be able to pick up her american accent. but i think the lady is translating for her so now im not sure

  • American accent is very smooth, and is easily understood by everyone fluent in English. Most if not all schools in Scandinavia teach English English, which some Americans have thought to be rather hard to understand.

  • they were using an advanced digital vocoder

norwegian language sounds like combination of every language in the world

  • She was on that show? Way cool.

tom cruise, john travolta....they are "completly brainwashed". Brave woman.

  • Tory is doing something great, just like all the escapees who are talking(able to talk still) and just the people concerned for humanity.

and these planted responses tha Sceinos use to all their critical information that has been posted is verry funny.

evil people will go down whether they realize it or not.

  • Tory, you're an inspiration to individuals.

  • Spacemen, Vulcanoes and H-bombs??? WTF This actually makes religion of the flying spaghetti monster look sane.

    @Tory keep on fighting.

  • I could imagine being in Tory's shoes and having no idea what they're saying for a solid five minutes. It's great to know that she got to spread her story on the show, though.

  • Scientology is a religion because it addresses man as a spiritual being. The parts of man are mind, body and spirit. If you address man as a spirit, you are in the religious field.

  • Addressign ones self as a 'spirit' actually places you in the 'spirituality' field - but not by default within the religion field. I'm not debating whether or not Scientology is a religion or a cult or whatever. I'm happy for people to believe in whatever they want to believe in. Who am I to say that Scientology is wrong.

  • They could have forced tithe like other religions but they don't. People give because they want to support Scientology. Dianetics can be found in the library, with the simple 10 step procedure people can give and recieve as much Dianetics as they want for free.

  • Here you are saying Scientology doesn't work and blame Scientologists for not wanting to speak to you. That is like a Christian deciding to worship Satan then wondering why Christians don't want to talk to them.

  • I think part of the point that Tory was trying to make, and a I apologise if this is incorrect, is that Scientologists appear to refuse any kind of debate. Scientologists simply shut the door on any discussions and take the 'I'm right, and your wrong' approach.

This is why Sweeney, in the recent BBC Panorama documentary on Scientology exploded with anger when trying to conduct an interview with them. They simply ignored all his questions, and rational arguments.

  • I'm a Scientologist in that I apply it to improve conditions in life. I'm not a "member" or "joined" I don't have to go every sunday. Although I study in the Scientology Academy. What would you like to debate?

Sweeney lost it because he accused the church of brainwashing which is a slanderous crime and Tommy didn't ignore that!

  • The point about Sweeney losign it - was that he put accusations to them about brainwashing and cult comparisons - based on factual or historical data. The Scientologist response was not to argue a case against these accusations - but to simply start personal attacks on Sweeney.

  • These comments should be under the clip "John Sweeney losing his temper" where Tommy said "You are accusing members of my religion of engaging in brainwashing" then Sweeney started screaming.

  • Your comments comparing former Scientologists - with Satanists is very flawed. You are essentially making the comparison on a group of people who simply do not - or no longer believe in something - with a group of people who have an irational hatred of something... and of which is a core enemey to their own beliefs!

  • My analogy was an example of why Scientologists don't want to speak with anti-Scientologists as Christians don't want to speak with anti-Christians. Tory is wondering why they don't want to speak to her when all she is doing is refuting their core beliefs.

  • I understand your point there. Sure... they don't want to speak to people who are 'anti' Scientology.

The problem is when one person decides they no longer believe - the church don't allow there friends or family that are still believers to maintain contact with them! That cannot be justified. I can't think of many other relegions that would treat people this way. These people are not anti Scientology - they just don't believe in it.

  • I don't see Tory refuting the core beliefs. She only appears to be judging the way the church leaders go about conducting operations.

  • 26 seconds into the clip she said "I got to the top and it didn't work". IT is a broad generality.

  • Really just another way of saying - It did not have the answers 'for me'. Her LA talk gives a much clearer insight into why she speaks out againt Scientology... which is more about the way things are conducted. Her husband and friends broke of contact before she became anti Scientology - simply because she left.

  • In her LA talk she is speaking against Hubbards policy and writings. It sounds like she's against Management and teachings. Let her make a clip endorsing "Dianetics" or "the way to happiness".

  • from ireland tory-been watching this subject for the last few weeks-i have never seen such a nonsensical 'religion' in all my life-it looks like a cult and the more money you pay the more enlightened you become.thank god for countries like germany etc who try to ban tom cruie movies and all that..fair play to you girl keep it up!!!

  • Is it really you? I have seen so much footage of you and I admire your courage and determination. Escaping is one thing, but to turn it into something great like you have done is just amazing. You are a hero Tory, no doubt about that. And my comment (in Danish) just refers to your correction of the numbers of active members in Co$.

Lots of love and respect from Denmark.

  • Herligt at Tory nåede at korrigere antallet af aktive kultmedlemmer. 50.000 kontra 10 millioner...

  • i have a problem with mimic of dialects when i hear them, and i even remember them sometimes. i spoke with my friend from the philipines and then suddenly i got this weird russian accent...i once visited sweden and after 1 week i spoke swedish automatically when i came home to norway.

  • well, i'd say most of the time i speak fairly neutral english but when i get surrounded by some of the locals i find myself breaking into abit of a southern drawl as well hehe. i heard there are only about 500k scientologists anyways so, phew. freaky.

  • think your self lucky i'm English, when i am in the USA they think in Australian!!

  • right will prevail

  • Was thinking the same thing on the accent. I have a fairly typical NW English accent normally... I work with people from all over the world and travel a lot, and seem to have homogonised all those accents into one for work/talk with colleagues... yet people think I have a Scandanavian accent for some reason... yet I have only been to Norway for 5 days... odd...

  • The Norwegian commentary (What you all think is them talking backwards) is actually quite interesting. They discussed the critiques of Scientology and also why people like Tory, whom I respect greatly, are usually critics and usually the most vocal of them.

  • Tory you are a hero!!!!!

  • To all of you who are asking what's up with her accent. A persons speech style is subject to speech convergence, meaning accent or speech style shift towards that of the other person. Perhaps that may be the answer to your question.

  • i was wondering about that....it's funny; i work with people (over the phone) all over the world on a daily basis and i catch myself doing that sometimes (not mockingly) to communicate better i suppose.

  • "THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN CONTROL PEOPLE IS TO LIE TO THEM. You can write that down in your book in great big letters. The only way you can control anybody is to lie to them."

    - L. Ron Hubbard, "Off the Time Track," lecture of June 1952, excerpted in JOURNAL OF SCIENTOLOGY issue 18-G, reprinted in TECHNICAL VOLUMES OF DIANETICS & SCIENTOLOGY, vol. 1, p. 418

  • Why are the two young women speaking backwards?

  • Now the guys doing it!!!

  • I really don't understand this new accent??? Although it is many years later from the other video......hmmmm.

  • Jeanette Sky has done a doctorate on elfs and tolkien and holds a doctorate in religious history but what comes out of her mouth is so much hogwash that you would think she was hired by the Church of Scientology to do damage control. Not even worth transcribing IMHO.

Quickly summed up she falls for every trick the scientologists play out as the persecuted religion card and seems to have no real knowledge of the cult at all.

  • gurimalla

  • "I know six young people who are dead"-If they are dead, how does she still know them?

  • What are you serious ? Are you handy capped? or just mind warped cultist? Lemme spell it out if you missed the odvious implication... it's real simple... try putting this word called "of" in between the words "know" and "six". Make sense now? No ? Here I will do all the work for you.

/me Clears throat. Cracks fingers. Spits in hands. Rubs hands together.

Tory was trying to say "-I know OF six young people who are dead."

  • What the fuck is with the phony-baloney accent?

God, maybe this woman was smart enough to flee Scientology, but she's still batty as a fruitcake.

  • I have heard her speak elsewhere; why is she using the accent?

  • Yeah i was wondering the same. maybe she got influenced by the norwegian dude :D

  • That does happen to people who are around others with accents for a period of time. I knew someone who went to England for a week and they came back with a slight English accent. My Aunt went to SE United States for 6 months and came back to Seattle with an Southern accent.

  • Im sorry, but your friend that went to England and came back with a British accent was totally faking it. The part of the human brains that controls language and accents would NOT fall into a new accent in one week.

Now, your aunt who spent 6 months, could have developed a SMALL accent but not much.

  • Not always true, when I am around english people, I tend to accidentally match their accent. Its not a common thing but some people can mimic accents upon hearing them.

  • No, thank you!

  • Is there a transcript with a translation of the Norwegian?

  • Its too bad I never got my grandpa to teach me to speak it, then I would be able to translate for you. XD

  • They said it's just translation.

  • Duh, I know they said it's translation! I meant a translation of what the other lady was saying...

  • I see. I missed that. Didn't mean to sound confrontational.

  • I can translate, but it'll cost ya'

  • shes hot

  • lol, funny Norwegian accent
