@MRCroosingTootH - Two things to remember when considering the time. 1st the needle isn't showing the actual speed. So the car is going faster than its showing. 2nd the YouTube time isn't accurate. The 540i were 5s cars. Like 5.7s for the 2001 540iA Sport with the 3.15 differential

@robbie1490 - GPS is crap. Use an OBD2 reader. GPS takes time itself to display speed. Trust me, the needle is playing catch up with the actual speed of the car. Needle moves slow

Its an auto, the 6 speeds pick up a bit better. The auto is still a very quick car. My dad had one, and run against my impreza wrx he was faster after 30mph, and from say 70-150 it decimated my impreza.

Is this steptronic transmission? I'm going to get E39 540i but can't decide if I want to go with auto or manual. I have never driven manuals before, I'm sure I can learn it but the question is do I need it? May be auto will be good enough.

@xxMIK1989xx It is indeed a steptronic and a very smooth one at that. I know that there are those that say the manual is the only way to go but I beg to differ. The 540i is more of a gentleman's sports car hence the automatic transmission fits in like a glove. If you want to be a hooligan or take it to a track then by all means get the manual (or an M5) but make sure you test it first as the clutch engagement and the pedal travel distance may surprise you (I personally didn't like it at first).

I've raced my friend's M5 twice now and he has a tune, Intake, tubi exhaust, race cats, and a upgraded diff with a different lower gearset. I have an intake and maybe a flash? I dunno.

This looks like an auto steptronic 5 speed - Assuming a level road in any event, acceleration could have been faster if the driver had engaged sport mode or changed up manually on steptronic - Motor Trend records 5.6 seconds 0-100 for 6-sp manual and most sources state 6.0-6.4 seconds 0-100 for auto.

I read BMW almost didn't release the M5 because this machine was fast enough, the fastest production 4-door in the world, when released in 1997.

I'm a vtec fanatic and i own a 523i e39 now, had many crx eg6,... an e39 is a family car with a sporty feeling .Comparing with honda civics is just wrong . E39 is fast and comfort combined and most of all very reliable.

Both honda's and bmw's are fun to drive end of the endless discussions.

Butt i'm 25 year old now and i choice bmw its more mature.
