It kind of had the whole point that the motive didn't matter. Could be anything. They're bored, they're messed up, they're drug addicts. They sort of point out that it doesnt matter, what does it change? Think of the rewind scene. It's not a regular movie.. The director wants you to be conscious that it's a movie.
