I think Stern's gotten a lot of success on ICC playing an obscure defense that he's studied a great deal. I guess some GMs do that too, but with a larger set of attacks and defenses.
Howard is a fucking liar. I'll never believe anything that comes out of his mouth again. Just yesterday he said he loses every single game. Maybe that was an exaggeration, but still... he's playing at a 1900 level.
Hey Jerry. Nice video -- introduced me to the Budapest defence!
Just wondering, however: @ 1:44 what is the great upshot to moving the knight to e4? I would also consider g4 as better maybe, but I'm not sure. Overall, what would we do if either move was simply met with a pawn that challenges it (ie. h3 or f3)? Would the upshot be that we would have then weakened the Kingside?
Jerry, I really likd this annotation of this game very well done! I was 1865 fide when I was 15 years old and have not played much chess last 20 years since discovering the fairer sex. However, this video really reminded me of how much fun chess could be I would also argue that the castle was not the best play as you suggest but you are a GM and I am an old guy who has not played in years.
This makes me want to learn the Budapest opening well because it looks like it owns against those are haven't studied how to play against it, which would probably be most people until you start playing against masters. Nice analysis!
I also didn't realize Howard Stern was such an astute chess player. I'm happy to realize this being such a big fan of his for over 20+ years. He has to be playing and studying on a regular basis to be playing at such a highly respected level. I mean I'm not shocked, let's face it, Howard has ALWAYS been a geek! All his fans know that much about him! lol Great game Howard! Brilliantly played!
From what I can see you made a tiny mistake in this video. @ 08:12 you said something about not taking the rook directly when instead it is a mate in one, queen to f4, from what I can see. Tiny mistake though, great videos.
There was an article in Chess Life magazine by the guy who coached Howard Stern. It was all interesting stuff but basically the general sense of it is that with perseverance and a good work ethic anyone can become a strong chess player.
The actual game only lasted 11 moves, with Peperle winning playing precisely your variation after Biegler took the knight! The training problem was to replicate this feat. After 5...Ne4+ white played 6.Kg3, and after 6...Qh4 white replied 7.g3, thinking he had flanked the Queen. Black of course took on g3 with his queen and white took the knight with his king, leading to your variation. Amazing how it played out with only a one move difference.
I just played that variation you showed us in this video as training! Apparently it was from Biegler - Peperle, 1952. I immediately remembered this video.
i knew howard was a chess player but i didn't know he was this good, to play and win at the 1900 level is above average skill level, i'm 27 yrs old and i'm only playing at a meager 1400 level although i have had 1800+ level guys tell me when i'm hot i can play at the 1600 level but that's as high as i go at the moment, i've heard that after the age of 21 if you are not a GM already you can NEVER reach that level, is this true? How discouraging.
You should question lines including this "never" word. I know of at least 1 instance of a player being a grandmaster after 30. Many beyond 21+ do the same.
@KBoogs719 that never is ridiculous! besides one should care only about improvement. Improvement in chess is a great reward. Howard can tell you - he is not playing to become GM but for adrenaline & fun...
I've increased my level of play significantly after i employed a training method to increase my level. What i do is play people that are around -60< X <+20 score range. What this achieves is consistency. I usually lose due to my consistency. I started out 1200 level and now im 1610. I play very aggressive style so I'm always the guy attacking in most games so I usually lose to my mistakes.
by playing 3.d5 black equalizes 3...Bc5 4. Nc3 d6 = according to MCO 15th edition. I enjoy playing this opening its full of traps and has a good surprise value. Thanks for the video!
That has to be a setup. No 1900 would have played h3. h3 weakens the kingside too much when there are many threats to f2 (the knight the queen and the bishop.)any class A player would have had worries about Bxf2 once black plays c5. I think either this guy wasn't a 1900 or the game was predetermined.
This was great ! I know absafuckinglootly nothing about chess and I'm stoned out of my mind on bubble hash and I watched the entire vid and learned nuttin ! ;(,,,,,,,,
I have one quibble with your video. You don't look at 3...Ng4 at all (which gives Black an almost equal game), but instead cover 3...Ne4. After 4 a3!, Black's game is crap. He cannot exchange pieces on d2 or c3 with ...Bb4+, and his knight has only the square c5 to run to, which will be easily covered by a b4 advance. 3...Ng4, on the other hand, gives black an almost equal game. 4 Bf4 Nc6 5 Nf3 Bb4+ 6 Nbd2 Qe7 7 a3 Ngxe5 8 axb4?? (Nxe5 Nxe5 9 e3 += )...Nd3# is a fun variation.
All of this analysis is after 3 dxe5, rather than the terrible 3 d5. If this was in a blitz game, then Stern has some incredible talent. Even if it wasn't in a blitz game, it's still impressive.
I had no idea that Howard Stern played chess, although I'm not too surprised that he does.
@PandaAbomination Unfortunately I'm not able to cover the variations that everyone would like to see. Youtube allows me to upload an 11 minute video max. I appreciate the feedback/analysis/compliment. =)
Nice analysis Jerry. I never knew Howard played chess or that he is this good. I think that the 1900 player played h3 (just a guess) because Howard was rated higher and most people play passively when paired up. At 1:15, the best (just slightly) move is Nf3, preventing Black's future plan of ...e5.
Howard was really into chess, then he said he got sick of it and it made him so angry because he wasn't getting any better, now he says he's back into it. I'm into blitz chess but I don't have Howard's patience to spend hours and hours on one game.
Wow this was very interesting, I never new Howard Stern was a chess player. the commentary was excellent as well with all of the possible moves explained. Great vid!
You might point out that d5 is a much inferior line to dxe5. Although, arguably d5 is safer, white is better off dxe5 as long as he/she is aware of traps involving things like b6
at 2:22 why would you but the bishop there? If it advanced on to b4 that would check the king and then if white responded with bishop to d2 you back your bishop up with a pawn to a5. If he responds with pawn to a3 then you could defend with either knight to a4 or pawn to a5.
@webvid91 Thanks for the comment/rating. I guess Bb4 is okay too. Bc5 looks best though seeing how it's placed on a diagonal straight to where the king will be after castling. I don't understand what you mean by the line "If he responds with pawn to a3 then you could defend with either knight to a4 or pawn to a5."
@webvid91 Oh okay. I think a3 is a move white will be wanting to play in this variation anyway to expand on the queenside, so maybe not allowing a3 to come with tempo it better. I don't know for certain though. Just thoughts...Thanks again for your comment. =)
Great! Even if the the watcher is a chess moron (I'm speaking of myself :)) and not very likely to remember or to put to use those tactics, the lesson to be drawn out from the video for everyone is to look hard for those ways of compromising the opponent's king safety and that chess doesn't have to be all about positional play and building intricate networks of tension :))
? Howard Stern plays chess? wow i didnt know that. not that i ever really watched his show or listened to it anyways, but wow i never knew that he played chess.
Thanks for the comment/rating. I'm really not sure. Every move played was pretty strong and there were several BEST moves made. Namely, Bxf2,Ne4,Qh4,f5,Rf8(0-0 likely slightly better though it hardly matters as mentioned in the video).
And to top it off, I'm sure he's far better a player today opposed to when this game took place. It's too short a game to really get a feeling for his strength. I'd need more examples of his play to answer such a question more accurately.

Short comment on the Marshall Defence mentioned at the beginning of the video (but maybe you omitted this detail for the intended audience):
After 1.d4 d5 2.c4 Nf6 3.cxd5 Nxd5, White should play 4.Nf3! first, as I believe 4.e4 Nf6 4.Nc3 e5! offers Black good counterplay.
