It took me a long time to appreciate Kumarji. His mehfils were sometimes not as dazzling as expected. As I listened more and more of him, I started appreciating his creative genius and altogether different style of presentation. What a variety of ragas he presented and made popular. His shorter versions of bada khayal ragas were like a pouch of jewels. Soon after I understood I was in love with his gayaki, he bid his farewell. Anything sung by Kumarji, uploaded by anyone is welcome.
An absolutely delightful variation of raag nand. This, alongwith Kumarji's Shankara, I think are the two signature songs that are brilliant, incisive and soulful. Note the plaintive phrasing, "Saa, ga ma ga pa" at the end of the refrain, "Ab to aa jaa". As usual, the original lyrics, written by the maestro, is very unusual for this raaga.
Dazzling. True perfection from the master. Goes to show that nothing is impossible if one just believes. Who would have thought that a man with 1 lung could sing the most demanding of singing disciplines- Hindustani Classical Music!!?
Divine voice. Kumar had a way with musical phrasing. Note the sudden "pakad" --(ga pa saa' re' ni pa) in the ascent. Very unconventional for Nand, but he not only gets away with it, but does it with a flair!
Nand in his voice is so impassioned, it loses its indolent strains and almost becomes as vibrant as Adana or Shankara.
Ah, Kumar Gandharva is a musical genius... His work following his recovery from lung illness is truly moving, marvellous and magnificient... His 'Ud jayega Hans Akela' soars you into the sublime:)
Marvelous to my ears no matter what the critics say about the adverse effects of his damaged lungs on his vocal style. His alleged weakness with the vilambit notes is beyond my comprehension , for I have heard only about four recordings of this gifted singer, but his fast-tempo modulations are simply not possible for any ordinary mortal to duplicate. Thanks for another fine upload and also for retrieving and posting a very informative essay about KG's life and career.
the genius of Kumarji was that even though he was restricted to short phrases due to his lack of breath and therefore shorter taans, he made it a unique style and was pitch perfect and unwavering in his sur taal and innovative in ways to pace his singing, to not run out of breath without sacrificing either the purity of swar or laya! he was the real master and one can not do it unless one is so completely in control of the art!
vilambit notes need prolonged capacity to hold one's breath and be unwavering in swar! After he lost a lung it was a physical impossibility for him and he never accepted defeat! The doctors said to him trhat he might never be able to perform on stage ever again! He did riaz with lot of pain for 2 or 4 years before he would attempt a 'baithak' again and when he did!!!! Boy He won everyone over both friends and /doubters /critics/enemies alike!

What a beautiful rendition of Nand by Kumarji! A true example of his genius.
Pt. Kumar Gandhrva gave a new insight to look into music and it was meditative as well as thought provoking.
