We moved to Hastings 12 years ago and have joined in 11 processions. This is the best video of Jack in the Green we have seen, as it really captures the atmosphere of this gloriously eccentric and fabulously colourful event.
We thoroughly enjoyed the video of the bikers which we have never seen close up before, as we are so involved in watching 'Jack in the Green. Thanks for sharing this video with everyone. It's just like being there all over again. from Carol Ann Bolton.
Oh... I was under the impression that they were placed somewhere in poses that somehow tell a story or commemorate an event, much in the way the the Nativity scene is put up on people's lawns at Christmas...
OMFG.. dont move to hastings.. its been voted the 3rd worst place in england to raise your kids.. its one of the most run down towns ever... the only reason why any body comes to our small town of hastings is the for the history...
Great footage ! What a fantastic festival ! Saw myself briefly in your film, dancing with Bakanalia Border Morris - one of the blue, as opposed to green, people ! And yes, we were very proud of our nudey blue mascot !! Rupert the Bare !!
That was great. I can't believe how many people there were. We have cheap holiday parades that go through town and most of the time it's maybe a dozen people per block-even at the starting point you would never get enough people that you were standing shoulder to shoulder. It's sort of sad, I've seen pictures from when it was big event and the turn out was amazing-I wonder what it would take to get people interested again.
I think this goes back to that history thing. This event celebrates a part of our ancient culture & that can't happen everywhere.
It was re-invented some years ago & seems to go from strength to strength. It's great that so many people enjoy & support the event. Long may it continue :)
Not quite the same so far as I am aware though we are on the look out this year as I am sure there must be some festival of some sort given the age of the town. Of course we do have Widecombe fair which goes back a long way - I have some footage of May Day celebrations in a little village we visited at the weekend. When I lived in Clitheroe as a kid I remember the torchlight processions though I don't know if they had any particular historical significance.
I had to upload the video overnight, as it was a big file.
I always tend to keep videos as 'private' until the quality is correct. That explains the delay & also the fact that i couldn't check it until i'd woken up!
This was the first time that i'd seen the procession at the start & i really enjoyed it. it's a great event & fairly unique as well :)
I was there! & i was there also on monday :) jack on the green 2011 ! bam:D i live in hastings woohoo :) hehehe

You came all the way from Germany to see this?
Let's hope to get to come to Hastings again someday :)
andymooseman 2 years ago
Looks like a fun festival! What happens to all the effigies after the procession?
fehquig 2 years ago
Good question & one i can't really answer i'm afraid.
The 'Jack' is ceremonially 'killed' & all the leaves taken off. This is supposed to bring good luck to those who get the leaves.
As for the others? Maybe they're stored away for next year? :)

North America is such a backwater.

I'll admit, this is something that we do very well over here. I love the history & this type of event. It's one of the great things about Hastings.
Funnily enough, i think a lot of Brits would happily move to the USA, if they could! :)

One of the good things about the Jack In The Green event is that it's not commercialised at all. That spoils so many so called 'traditional' events.
I've been to Widecombe in the past & i'm not surpised that something happens there for Uncle Tom Cobley & all :)
andymooseman 2 years ago
oh fun!!!!! are those festivities for Mayday or Beltane or something? I wish there were celebrations like this where I'm from
brojoghost 2 years ago
Well, they celebrate both really.
The event lasts for 4 days over the May Day bank holiday weekend, every year. This was the final day & the culmination of the festivities.
We are lucky to have something like this here :)
andymooseman 2 years ago
How is it that this vid has been up for HOURS and has only had one view? The tubes are screwy I tell ya!
I love the history of the event and the fact that it was brought back from near loss by a group of dancers! Hooray for the hippies and drunks:-)
