Has the exhaust manifolds been changer? If I remember correctly, all the Y-blocks had the cross-over on the top front of the engine, except for 56 Mercury.
spot on, you know your engines, Im 58 now and my first car was a 55 with a 272 manual trans It started me on a love of Yblocks, Ive tried them all but none compare, a y block has low down power and a sound that is awsome they are the only motor that I get a buzz out of driving.
i love the sound of the old y blocks i have a 57 fairlane but the 292 was bad and i went with a 460 but i don't suggest that it does not fit very well

I'm 57, my Dad had a great old Fairlane with a 292 in it. An engine with a great loping sound.
