Great programme. Brings back amazing memories. Spending some time in Venice (six days in 1998) became almost a mystical experience for me. Adding one's own footfalls on the same old paving stones around the many canal streets, St Marks Square and the other islands, to all those countless millions that came before throughout the centuries, it's like you're not only immersed in living European history, you're forever connected to it. It's a place of indescribable and unique magic.
I loved his video around Italy. He went to a place down south where people were dressing up Christ, wearing clothes and thorncrown and ,,celebrating,, crucifiction...that was a blody event...anybody remember the namee of the event and town?

The "Laziness" comes on the reasons to build these ships. Not to trade them or sell them, as you wrongly thought, but to go somewhere on the "third" world and pay cheaply for goods that other people worked, so they can sell them for exhorbitant amounts, thus using and exploiting real "artisans and craftmen/women" of the world. The first "Wall Street" style marketing/mass production of the planet. Glass-making & lace-making never fed Venice as a society, their "morally wrong" trading did.
The Venetians. The ones that made slavery, trading (wall street style markets) and laziness (being that they didn't produce anything at all but glass) a part of civilization. That's the biggest reason no one ever trust a venetian, as already written by many important authors thru' history like Shakespeare...
oh, They also created credit and credit cards, and big bank conglomerates...among other evils!!!
They produced "nothing but glass"? Is their city made of glass? Were the ships produced by the Arsenal (famous around the world for its incredible output in a process of mass production that long pre-dated Ford) made of glass? I could go on and on but why waste my time? As well as being completely in the dark about the Republic of Venice you also know nothing about the history of slavery or banking.
@fuwanna Creating the first mass producing line-work is NOTHING to be proud of. You haven't said anything new, so what are you questioning? They didn't produce/sell ships. they just build them for themselves. They would RENT their ships to the highest bidder or to a Kingdom in need, of course, for a price. What else did they produce? educate me...Typical ignorant fool: "I could go on, but (I don't know shit)".
@GrifterUno Let's see, you accuse the Venetians of "inventing laziness," I counter that creating the most efficient shipbuilding system in the world hardly qualifies as "lazy" & you say "that's nothing to be proud of". Should they be proud of Titian or G. Bellini? How about Palladio? Their "lazy" glass making expertise was the envy of the world for some time, as was their lace-making; oddly you hate "mass production", but I have a feeling you'd also scoff at such art & craft. Why go on?
@fuwanna Also, Yes Venetians can be proud of Titian and whoever they want. That only makes them an artistic society, and a great one at that, but not a GOOD society. Ultimately, Titian and others ended up killed by their own people for being INDIVIDUALS. Like I said, many societies in Europe, still to these days, do not trust the Venetians, as European history, and some research, demonstrate.
@GrifterUno I find it truly odd that multicultural education of the last 30 yrs has rightly insisted how problematic it is to apply, say, Western society A's values as a measure of the values of Eastern society B, yet has failed to teach how equally problematic--& indulgent & narcissistic--it is to apply contemporary ideals to past epochs. You want the evil of Venice? Talk about their behavior in the 4th Crusade. But to damn a past culture for not embodying modern economic ideals? Silly.
@GrifterUno Titian died in old age of the plague. As for GOOD & trustworthy societies, depends on whom you're talking to. If group A, according to some sources, does not trust group B does that mean group B is actually untrustworthy? Insert different races (eg White/Black) & nationalities (British/Indian) to see the danger in that. You dislike Venice & capitalism; knowing the history of the former I still like it & I'm interested in alternatives to the latter. Va bene, happy new year.
@fuwanna The Dutch/English created slavery. Venetians made it a business. First slaves were white, eastern europeans, sans SLAVES (from "slavic" as in slavic people). I know that...Did you know that?...and banking, did they or didn't they created the system of credit which is NOW destroying the world as we know it. Next time you answer, do it right. No bullshit: " I could but I won't". Only cowards do that. Don't be a pussy and offer explanations. Who knows? I may even learn from you. Peace.
Actually, slavery existed long before the Dutch or English nations came into being as such--it existed in antiquity, as I'm sure you know You must also know then that the start of European slave trading in Africa is usually dated at 1441 with Portuguese 2 ship captains who captured 12 Africans and brought them back to their home country as slaves. 3 years later another Portuguese kidnapped 235 more Africans--and the slave trade was off & running its awful course...
