A correction: Jackie Brown is not based on a graphic novel, but on the novel "Rum Punch" by crime master Elmore Leonard. Of course the cops are not particularly interesting; that's the point of a Leonard story: the criminals have far more color than the cops.
The "Jackie Brown" soundtrack is underrated, with some great R&B tracks from the '70s. Some of the music is even taken from "Coffy," a blaxploitation film starring Pam Grier.
Hell Yeah, Jackie Brown finally got realeased here in Germany! Thank God! The best Quentin Tarantino movie ever! WOOOOOO, Jackie Brown!!!!!!!!!! BTW-Pam Grier is one sexy woman!

@fnchrstphr you totally wrong man, jackie brown is one of the most awesome movies that i've ever watched. Quentin's my favourite director :) and trust me, you gonna fall in love with all of his works, just not only his movies' soundtracks :)

@05tonytin I can agree with you on the soundtrack, because that is the one good quality of the film. However, I feel like the film is overrated. I don't care if you like it or not, it has to to be Tarantino's least artistic film and entirely outcasts itself from Tarantino's talent. It was him basically deciding to make a regular film with his soundtrack style, which I think is sad--'cause he could have made a kickass blaxploitation flick...Well, I already have ideas for one myself. Why not?
@Transformers2themax i disagree. tarantino does not need to restrict himself to do the movies people exspect from him. This movie has written tarantino all over it
@trumblewumblehumble Yeah, it has "Tarantino trying to make a normal, mindless, non-artistic film" written all over it. If Tarantino's gonna make an exploitation film, he should stick to his style. Blaxploitation isn't just some regular "gangsta" genre. They're supposed to be cool and funky. About the only two scenes of music that fit the film are Across 110th Street and Inside My Love. The rest of the film is just Tarantino spitting some of his favorite soul songs all over the place. It's dry.
@trumblewumblehumble It didn't work very well as a follow up to Pulp Fiction. He wasted all his humor in that and From Dusk 'Till Dawn. It's no wonder the dialogue is so dry. It's not creative, the film hardly even has any humor, the characters are just dull and uninteresting, the sex is unnecessary and almost ruins the seriousness of it...and it does not feel like a blaxploitation film at all. Blaxploitation flicks are supposed to be funky and badass. Jackie Brown's just a poor crime "film".
@Transformers2themax calling jacky dull is just unreasonable now. She was one of the brightest stars in tarantino movies.
It's also no crime film, it's a movie about growing old and putting everything onto one card to escape the life you would end up with. Pam g´Grier acted this out, in an awesome way.
Tarantino is not forced to be funny in his movies. At least i had enough laughs in jacky brown, it does not always have to be comedy
@trumblewumblehumble Actually, it IS a crime film. I hate it and even I know that. Gunrunning? Drug dealing? People getting killed? The police? It's a crime film; all of Tarantino's films in the '90s were. And no, it does not have to have humor. It has to be entertaining, which it is not. I shut it off five minutes through it was so dull. It's his worst film and doesn't have the level of entertainment to actually get the "art" across. When you lose your audience, you're doing it wrong.
@trumblewumblehumble And no, Pam Grier is not dull--she's a great actress; an original blaxploitation star. Tarantino just didn't know how to make Jackie Brown blaxploitation like he did with Pulp Fiction. Just because the acting's good, doesn't make it a good film; vice-versa. It's fine if you like it, but never compare it to any of his other works. To do so would be like comparing Patton(a fun, but non-creative film) and Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now.
And really what is the art of the film(or as it should be called because of its low amount of seriousness, "movie")? It does a terrible job at paying homage to blaxploitation films and the '70s in general(it doesn't feel '70s at all), it has disgusting cinematography(a shock because of how great Pulp Fiction looked), the dialogue is uninteresting, the characters are uninteresting...The story can't just be the art. How are you supposed to get the art across if it's not entertaining?
@trumblewumblehumble You know what? I watched part of it last night. In order to not be entirely biased, I found two scenes that were actually fairly entertaining. I liked the entire scene of SLJ and Beaumont. I also liked the scene when SLJ goes to a bar to meet Pam Grier. Those scenes were well done and somewhat had the Tarantino signature. The rest of the film is unnecessary nonsense. Robert De Niro does not belong there and Peter Fonda's daughter is ugly and very uninteresting.
@trumblewumblehumble The first scene with the Girls With Guns is another reason why I don't care for the film. It very might as well have been Tarantino getting on a stage and schooling the ignorant general public on firearms. That's what that scene was. I absolutely cannot stand it when films practically reference the firearms being used(the way it happened in JB at least). It's like Clint Eastwood referring to his poncho or Jules talking about his Jerry curl afro; it's just a characteristic.
@trumblewumblehumble And the scene with The Supremes? Really? Just a useless way of using a Motown song that Tarantino likes. It wasn't funny, it wasn't entertaining in any way. It didn't benefit the story or enlighten the screen in any way. Street Life, Inside My Love, and Strawberry Letter 23 were used perfectly--that's it.
@JordanDinstrumentals Eh, it's okay. Scenes of it reek of Tarantino and his talents, but it's not very complete. The entire first 20 minutes of it(aside from the intro) are completely dull and uninteresting. The dialogue is cheap and unprofessional compared to his other works, and it's just not entertaining. It had some great moments and a great story(it's based off a graphic novel--duh), but it could've been so much better. Most of the black characters were great--that's it.
@Transformers2themax ok fair assessment if you look at it like that. but with me i just love illegal crime films with guns, outlaws drugs, funny lines, so no matter how slow it was and what it could do better ill always love it, with the addition of an out of this world soundtrack of 70s disco and soul gems combined with actors like S.L Jackson n de niro in it on top of the fact i love this genre, there's no way i cant value it an ace, looking at it from a stance though all your points are valid
@JordanDinstrumentals Still, the fact that it's during the '90s ruins the idea of it being an homage to '70s blaxploitation flicks. In Pulp Fiction, there was nothing modern. They had cellphones, but those kinds don't exist. Robert De Niro's character was the only likable white(Yes, I'm half white--so no, I am not racist). It had too many flaws to be a complete film. And overall, it was not nearly as artistic or as classic as Pulp Fiction in general.
@Transformers2themax yh course i have mate i love it its amazing, and your probably right that pulp fictions a littlle bit better and the storys glued together better, but still despite the fact jackie brown could have been glued together a lil better i still think the fact that its movie with samuel l jackson driving around with bodys in his car, selling illegal firearms, and shooting hilarious one liners, in addition to de niro in on the fun and soundtrack, i cant hold it as anything but an ace
@JordanDinstrumentals Yeah, crime films are good. But that's not really the idea of blaxploitation. Scenes in Jackie Brown are great; my favorite being when SLJ goes to meet Beaumont leadin up to and when he kills him. It's a great set piece and has "Tarantino" written all over it. However, the rest of the film and characters like the blonde chick, Robert Forester's character, and the cops are just disgusting and uninteresting. It was basically Quentin deciding to make something too normal.
Besides, it's during the '90s. The entire magic and charm of Tarantino's other films is that they're not set during any era. Well, they are, but not that particular time period itself. They take place in their own era. See, basically, what he does is takes a specific genre of classic cinema, makes a film of that genre, gives it the feel of the era in which that genre aired, and gives it an appropriate soundtrack. Jackie Brown should be during the '70s--not the '90s.
This version was recorded for the soundtrack to the film 'Sharky's Machine' with Burt Reynolds and Rachel Ward. Even though this version was not actually used in the film, it's still a standout example to me of film music of the early 80s, and a big favorite.
love this song, learned so much in life, and still learning, I have no regret, met the best people and especially knowing some celebrity's along the way.
Great song, touches me deep makes my neck hair stick up lol.. Growing up Brooklyn. U learn from the streets, Good and Bad lessons for life. Had 2 choices be a badguy or be a goodguy.I think i chose right?,I retired last year after 20 yrs of Law Enforcement. What i learned from the streets, helped me tremendously. So this song hits a nerve .
@LuckyLeBone Yeah, this song rocks and I grew up listening to it too. I am 42, a New Yorker too, and this song NEVER gets old! :) Thanks for serving NYC. Cops get a bad rep these days, so I had to mention that. Randy Crawford is the bomb! I feel like I am 10 years old again! LOL

Anyone know who's playing guitar? Very Nile Rodgers-y, though I know it's not him.

This version was recorded for the soundtrack to the film 'Sharky's Machine' with Burt Reynolds and Rachel Ward. Even though this version was not actually used in the film, it's still a standout example to me of film music of the early 80s, and a big favorite.

LOL

@mannnn725 im very much aware of the film and the influence behind the film directed by QT....
my comment posted a year ago was the focal point of the classic song that was prominently featured in the film.
