This statement implies that correlation implies causality. Take this analogy and I believe the basis of Mr Burgess' comment: let's say you take 10,000 people and administer a cognitive exam. You could run a Pearson correlation on those that wore red shirts with test scores. If the results showed that those that scored significantly higher were wearing red shirts, you could say that wearing red causes higher test scores; or that CO2, a by product of human expiration, causes global warming.
