i heard this song on the radio when i was having a shitty day at work and it brought a smile to my face i hadn't heard this song in a long while and it really brightened my day thank you 54/40 ... oh yea on a side note my friend is friends with the second guitarist's son haha
@dfbhcf I think they're more their own sound then a mashup of stuff like most stuff comin out of the recording industry these days. I really find that they have a truly West Coast Vancouver song. Like seriously get in your car and drive around Vancouver listening to them and you can just feel it's from this area, and unlike Tragically Hip, they're amazing live. Big Sugar i find is way too bluesy to even be mentioned in the same breath. 54/40 is really Vancouver unlike Nickelback.
@vanhalendlrband What are you talking about? The Hip are great live too. And Big Sugar and 54-40 do sound slightly similar. Listen to "Turn the Lights on" after this. You'll hear a similar sound.
@dfbhcf I can hear maybe a slightly similar sound on Turn The Lights on. But i find 54-40's vocals make it too different though. I found Big Sugar to be very bluesy, "If I had my way" babababa babababa. Either way we both agree they're awesome. I always hear the hip sucked live up until 2 years ago, so maybe they've finally improved that part. I've seen them live before and i was like what the hell?
@vanhalendlrband Goes for a lot of Canadian bands. Kim Mitchell really suits Southern Ontario. Rock and Hyde suits Vancouver Island. Grapes of Wrath suits the Okanagan. Tragically Hip (while ultimately Canadian) strongly suits Eastern Ontario. Even the English band Arcade Fire has a strong Montreal feeling to their songs. Nickelback, not my taste of music, should have stayed in Calgary!
NEVER EVER get sick of this song and I've never seen a bad 54-40 show. I'm so lucky to live close to the Canadian border and have seen them many many times
shit it took me forever to find this one song... i have loved this since i was a litle girl, and it always bit me in the ass cause i never knew the title
some of the catchiest piano chords eva, and incredible rythm to it. and yeah big sugar is unreal as well! maybe the most underrated canadian band out there
54-40 is amazing i saw them live at a free concert they were unbelieveable, they have never recieved the commerical success and recoginition they deserve, especially in the states, alot like the hip in that respect
OMG! I've been trying to remember this song for a such a long time! I remember seeing this vid when I was 6. I had no idea they were Canadian. I'm Canadian. I always mistaken these guys for some british band like The Who. Once I stumbled across this song, I looked up the rest, this song has such a different tone from the rest. ROCK 101 always plays these guys on the air, just not this song. That's whats been stopping me from remembering.
@Maxmulham i'm totally in the same boat as you! i read your comment, and was like "this song sounds familiar, but i dont know why you've been looking for it...". That was until I heard the chorus and was like FUCK YA!
@bootht99 LOL. When I posted this comment 3 years ago, I remember doing as much investigating as I can to find this song. It took me awhile. A couple local references and 200 yahoo answer questions later, I finally figured it out. Kinda sad really. Just goes to show how underrated these guys really are!
@Maxmulham no kidding eh. people need to be more aware of the music they produce. They are playing next week in Brandon, Mb which is only an hr from me. I think I'm going to try and get tickets! With the Hip being my first concert i've ever been to, I'd love for 5440 to be my 2nd.

Great song, great video! It reminds me of something I'd see on, say, CBC-TV's "Music Hop" shows back in the '60's!
Happy July 1st to one & all!

Probably Canada's second greatest band, after Rush. Really underrated and underappreciated even in Canada.

This song really should be more popular than just 4,600 views. If an american band did a cover of this song. It would go big.
