Now, I have a question if I may, I own a '92 civic with a D16A7.
Recently My car suddenly died on me, after I parked it on the same day.
After many checks, I have come to know that my coil is faulty.
Now I have a new dizzy and I want to make this adjustment, but I don't know how these marks look like on this engine, and where they are, because the engine is different a bit.
Is the timing mark always in the same place on older Honda's? If so, what is the mark on the flywheel for? My 93 Accord has marks there and I thought those were for setting up the timing.

Hey Eric, nice video! I have a 1998 nissan frontier 4 cyl, I pulled out the oil pump and the distributor after I put it back together and test drive the truck and it feels the rpm are too high! Do I need to adjust the distributor co'z I dont have the timing light?
Hey Eric the car guy have a question my 96 integra ls special would turnoff while driving caused by the distrubiator I put another one on bt didn't mark it so now my car wont turn on please help how to fix it is it the timmining got off?
@EricTheCarGuy I tried a paper clip and 18g wire and did my best but still no connection :(... Could it be because my ICM? I kno its bad cuz i have random beeping and i know it controls the turn signals, but i dont know if it controls the service connector.
@EricTheCarGuy I've set the timing and I'll go back in to the shop tomorrow afternoon. I had 133 hydrocarbons on the lowspeed test and 100 was the limit. I also failed the timing section, but now it should pass. I'll let you know. Thanks for the help.

Hey good video. I got a question for you though. I have a 95 prelude with a jdm h22a motor. I set my timing off the fly wheel with a timing light. I also jumped the check connector. It calls for 16 degrees btdc and i set it to that as when the motor was warm and everything. It still misses some when i start it back up. the car was accidently drove with retarded timing for a mile or two and I was wondering if that would damage the motor? what could i check for?
@rockyjr82 For a short period of time I don't think that would be damaging. Ignition timing really won't cause a miss however as that would be something else.
@EricTheCarGuy Alright I will check for some other problems that may cause it to miss. Thanks for for answering its kinda impressive you got the time haha.
@hgortermarof How do you plan to transfer that mark to the new distributor? If you were using the same distributor you could do that but if you are replacing it it's not possible and just easier to time the engine after you have installed the new distributor.
@nico27004 No, the keyway is offset so it's not necessary to put the engine in time before removing it. You might want to watch the video that I did on replacing the distributor in this car for more details.
@EricTheCarGuy how would you know if you dont need to time a car? would i look under the hood for the sticker? and if it didnt say anything about the timing then you dont have to set it to tdc?
@nico27004 You always need to make sure it's in time but for best results consult with the service manual for the service procedure of the vehicle you are working on.
sorry i ran out of characters, i have a 95 honda civic ex and I am always refilling the radiator becuase of the leak above the alternator. also I watched this video because I might need to adjust my ignition timing because I have trouble starting when its cold. Thanks man, I appreciate all your advice.
Hey Eric, I noticed that the color marks are invincible pretty much in the video, I wanted to know that if these lines are only visible with the timing light? also my headgasket is busted and on the left side around the alternator just slightly above it is leaking coolant because is see white deposits and green stuff bubbling around it. some of it is dripping in the left side of the alternator. Do u know any tricks as to how to mend these leaks. my coolant is disapperaing and I always refill it.
thanks Eric for another informative video. What does it mean if you need to go further in rotating the distributor to get to the desired timing, but are unable to turn the distributor any further because you reached the stop point of its hold down bracket? Does this mean you have to pull the distributor out and reinsert it in a different position, then try again?
@EricTheCarGuy Thanks, I will have to determine TDC in that case and go from there. Probes are a hassle to work with, very tight quarters around the timing covers. (94 Probe 2.0L aka MX6/626). If you ever work on a Probe or MX6/626 I will probably download the video to a flash drive to keep it for life, lol.
one more thing - if you are in fact needing to go past the distributor stop, which as you say might mean the engine is out of time, then does that imply that your timing reading you get is probably not legitimate, because the engine really isnt mechanically timed correctly? e.g. reading 9 deg BTDC on the light would mean nothing?
@7719stu Good idea for the marks but it's very important that you short the connector before you set ignition timing or it will not be correct. Idle adjustments are done AFTER timing adjustments but you must be sure the timing is correct first. Also make sure that you marked the correct location. Good luck.
Ok than so eric than since my exhaust cam is at tdc and my intake cam is of by 1 tooth that would make a lot of diffrence than right ? Ok and some times my car won't turn on on the first turn and while drivin and clutch down my car the rpms will go all the way down til the car dies and when @ a red light my car will idle around 500 and just die out wat can it b ppl said it could b my fpr ?
hey eric i have a ? i have a 91 integra b18a1 my ? is witch way is retard and witch way is advanced on the distributor and is it the same for the cam gears ? and my other ? is my intake cam gear is off by 1 tooth towards the front of the car will that cause my car to waste alot of gas and make my car run like it has no power
@ElCompaBudah Anytime you mess with cam timing you will change the way the engine runs. Probably the easiest way I can answer your question in this amount of space is that the engine rotates counterclockwise when looking at the front of the engine, anything in that direction is advance and clockwise would be retard but this is opposite for the distributor since it's on the other side of the engine.
bro Eric i have a problem, i want to set timing for my Honda Civic Hatchback but im confused about the pulley of the crankshaft i don't understand the mark, where can i set that mark, i've heard that the mark always in the UP position, the the #1 piston is in the top is it true? then also the camshaft pulley also in the UP position? pls i need your help :) thanks
@jtoplinerc I strongly recommend you watch the video again as I go through a detailed explanation of what marks to look at when performing the timing adjustment, the Civic is pretty much the same set up as this Integra BTW. Good luck.
@EricTheCarGuy thanks bro i already set the timing and it was all correct thank you bro.. :) btw there is a noisy thing in my engine near in my timing belt, i wonder if u could give me some tips if where that noisy thing comes from thanks :)
@jtoplinerc Now I realize that you are not setting ignition timing but mechanical timing. Use the white mark on the crank and make sure the cam sprocket has the mark 'up' pointing upward when you line the marks up. Good luck.
Thanks for the video, Eric. You're explanations are helpful. I did a b18c swap on my 2000 si and it is running good. But I did not check the timing and have been wondering how to do it. Now I know. Now to get a timing light.
Never connect a timing light when the car is running .....secondly the clamp on the timing light usually has an arrow... this must point at the number one spark plug...otherwise good vid!!
I would like to thank you for showing me how to replace front wheel bearing and on my 1994 accord ex 2.2L. Two days ago I changed the distributor O ring and now car seems sluggish. I want to set the ignition timing and the instruction on the hood say 15 + - 2 degree BTDC. It does not say anything disable to computer. Some people say that ignition timing on my car is controlled by computer so it does not need to be adjusted manually....is it true? ...thanks you...
@HBGAH The set up on that engine is the same as this one and I think if you look closely it will say follow the service procedure under the timing adjustment, this is the service procedure. I will say that if the car suddenly got 'sluggish' then it's probably not the timing as that normally remains fairly constant, go ahead a check the timing but in your case I would keep looking for another cause.
I have a quick question. I have a 91 300zx i did a T-belt job on. I set the new autotensioner to spec, but overnight it collapsed a little bit. Some people say they tighten back up when the motor runs and that the hydraulic arm collapses from movement of the cam gears when the motor is shut off. Could you shed some light on this for me please thank you! It needed to be 3.5-4mm, i had it at 3.5, overnight the gap setting went to 3.25. Thanks in advance.
@Dantesdoom To be honest I don't know the specifics on that engine or that tensioner but if it's a sealed tensioner then it should not compress down when sitting overnight, if it does I would replace it personally. Good luck.
@EricTheCarGuy Its sealed, but it moved VERY VERY little. After the first night, it hasnt moved. The old one had given out, and this is brand new from the nissan dealership. I just wondered how sensitive the autotensioners are to spec. It as a little off, but my belt deflection was perfect.
@EricTheCarGuy Ok this was my thinking...she is done and timing back to the factory spec. I really appreciate your channel and what you do for all of us and the fact that you take the time to answer all our questions! Thanks!
@silverlight76 It does give you more options but these days most ignition systems don't even use a distributor and can not be timed using a light as a result, I would keep in mind your usage before spending the extra money.
Hi, i have a Nissan Sunny N16/ 2009, the problem is that i don't think there is a distributor in my car. I mean all the wires that come from the injectors and the sparking plugs go somewhere behind the engine. No distributor!
@branco445 I recommend watching the video I did on the Civic timing belt replacement as setting the timing on that engine is very similar to how you set it on yours.
Thanks for the very informative video! I have to replace the distributor on my 90 Integra and I'm a little afraid of the ignition timing. Your video was helpful but I think I am going to have a friend show me exactly how to do it.
@santos2089 Yea, I loved those especially since they had actually amber fog lights. I actually did a video on their installation that I might put out someday but it was about 3 years before ETCG even started so it should be interesting reviewing that footage.
hey eric my 95 integra is backfiring and i checked the timing and its ok and the distributor is ok too because i checked where the rotor was pointing to when the number 1 piston was at tdc and it was pointing were its suposed to be pointing at plz help.
@john1989100 Have you checked the cap and rotor for voltage leak problems or carbon tracking? You might also do a compression test to rule out a mechanical issue.
@LazySniper well these are "plug-n-play", no timing required. The only down is if the computer gets a surge, your engine will run crappy and will run really rich.
@nimsu You really don't as it is computer controlled. If there was a problem with timing it would have something to do with a mechanical issue such as a loose timing chain or a faulty sensor, in fact on those engines I don't even think they put marks on the crank pulley.
@EricTheCarGuy same problem here :) i have an 03 Fiat Doblo Malibu (idk if you know that model), when i start the engine i hear that noise like when you rub a fork on a plate, when i hit 2000-2500 rpm with the second gear on it vanishes, and the same thing happens when i park the car, and i move the steering wheel...what could it be? same problem with the steering belt?
FYI update. I did take the Jimmy to get the timing zeroed out. They got it done in less then an hour & told me they didn't need a tech 1, 2 or any kind of equipment like that. They did it manually. Learn something new again.
@wpk24rsx As long as you get it close it should be OK, in other words 'within the 2 outer lines' it will be timed. I'm really not a fan of aftermarket distributors for Hondas though as I've seen a few problems with them in the past.
@Intelpentium54321 To be honest YT messaging is not the best way as they don't allow threads of past responses in their messaging, as a result if we have a dialog it's hard for me to remember the problem being discussed as I get a LOT of questions as you might imagine and it's nice to have the past messages and responses to refer back to. Just click the 'contact' link at the bottom of any page on my website.
i have a problem i replaced my 97 civic distributor and had bad acceleration so i tried timing it and its all the way counter clockwise but tdc is lined up and still has bad accel any thoughts?
@Michiganborn1969 The important thing is that you were able to figure it out. Thanks for the updates though as I file this info so that I can use it to pass on to others as well as in my own work.
You maybe right Eric. So far the vote is 2 mechanics to 2 in favor of the ignition may have to be reprogrammed into the ECM that's if it doesn't re-learn the new position. But so far still no CEL & no codes so perhaps the computer is re learning but until it does I'm getting less MPG then before the intake gasket job.
I will check tomorrow, I will call around & scrounge up the 411 if I need the tech-1 or if I can get by with the screwdriver & a scan tool to zero in the timing & I'll let you know when the job is done what worked.
I was wondering about taking a long screwdriver & insert it down the distributor well & reset the direction of the gear on the oil pump so that way it will be easier to line up the cap w/the #1 cylinder. But for what's worth, even though I'm -7 degrees out of time, I don't have a CEL like I did at -9.
Btw this distributor is the weirdest setup. The #1 plug wire comes out of the dist at the 3 O'clock position but under the cap the contact for the point is on the opposite side in the 8 o'clock position.
@Michiganborn1969 I've heard of this before and if I remember correctly you need to take it to the dealer to have it retimed. Apparently with a GM scan tool you can correct the problem. But also make darn sure you have it in there correctly.
But according the scanner I'm still out of time by -7 degrees & the specs call for no more then +/- 2 degrees (zero is preferred). I've tried walking the dist into place little @ a time but still the best I can get is -7. Do you have any suggestions on how I can fine tune this to as close to zero as possible?
Howdy Eric. Just to let ya know my intake gasket is now complete. The process involved removing the distributor. I have it back in & got the timing as close as I can get it. I had the engine timing marks dead on & the #1 cylinder @ TDC.
Hey eric, sometimes in my del sol, after a shift, especially in 2nd and 3rd gear, when i step on the throttle, this car sometimes wants to slow down even more, instead of accelerating, but 2-3 seconds later, the rpm keeps climbing again, could this be misfire?
@davidzzz94 No, that sounds more like a slipping transmission. Make sure you use Honda fluid only and check the level with the engine off on level ground to get the proper level.
@EricTheCarGuy slipping tranmission?? well its a manual so i suppose the clutch? but the weird thing is the rpm doesnt wanna climb sometimes, instead it wants to drop harder when i step on the gas sometimes, but im planing on replacing the clutch tomorrow, and im trying to download ur video, but after i paid with my credit card, it still wont let me
@davidzzz94 You didn't specify the type of transmission sorry. Sorry to hear your having trouble with the video, click the support email link on the Fix It page and email me directly and I will get you taken care of.
@EricTheCarGuy ok thanks it sent me an email the next day giving me the download link, but the clutch is sliping in my car, and it is being replaced, but are you sure thats all the problem thats causing my delayed acceleration?
@davidzzz94 No but it's a good place to start if it's a known problem. Diagnosis is often a process of elimination and the best place to start is with the known problems.
@EricTheCarGuy yes sir, hey eric, do u have any tips take off the flywheel? lol i dont have air tools, so when i go and try to take off the bolts, the flywheel jjust spins with my breaker bar
@EricTheCarGuy i dont have the proper tools for this job, but when pluged into a scanner for electrical problems, everything is good, so do u suggest i take it to a tune up shop?
@EricTheCarGuy PART *1* hey eric! well i couldnt find what was really causing the acceleration delay problem from anything, i changed the clutch, fuel filter, clutch master cylinder even, and i cleaned the spark plug wires that goes on to the back of the spark plugs with some electrical parts cleaner, good spark plugs and connections, it still had the problem, so i just dropped the diagnostic
@EricTheCarGuy PART *2* after a while, i just random decided to upgrade my headers to some cheap ebay no brand headers, so i took the stock heat shield off and i noticed a big crack right down the middle of the stock headers, so anyways i just put the new one in, along with a test pipe. But ever since the new headers were installed, the acceleration delay never happened again, and its been almost 3 weeks, could u explain how the crack could be the reason thou? disrupted exhaust pulse??
@EricTheCarGuy ohh i see, well thanks so much for ur effort for helping! this is another success after all, the whole car runs smooth now, no more problems
I tried to do the timing on my 95 integra, don't know if it's my light that wasn't powerful enough or it's pully was too rusted, I can't see any mark on my pully... did that happen to you? what should I do?
@papercut1987 Yea the paint comes off the marks easily but the notches should still be there. You might find them on the pulley and pain them yourself with a little white paint to make them easier to see with the light.
hey Eric, my dizzy was making the same screeching noise in that video but it hasn't done it in a few weeks, but now my idle goes really low when im stopped at a light and some of my early gears are really bumpy, would that be caused by the dizzy? and it doesn't have any idle problems when i start the car, just once ive been driving for a while, and there's no check engine light. thanks in advance
@joelkarlonas If you take the cap off and see orange dust inside the distributor then replace the distributor and see if the other problems still exist, I suspect they will go away.
hi eric, i am still having problem setting my timing. it seems like as I (advance timing) turning dizzy counter clockwise, the idle would go up then goes down again. I am at least 10 deg off on idle and I have maxed out the adjustment on the dizzy. And I can feel a difference of about 10% loss of power when driving the car.
This may be a dumb question but if I were to change my distributor on my obd2 h22a honda prelude motor would the computer set the timing for me or would i still have to adjust the timing because i heard that on my obd2 motor you cant adjust the ignition timing
@jdmlov3 You will still need to set base timing, the computer can only adjust timing so much. Make sure you follow this procedure or you will not be successful however.
Thanks a ton for answering my question so fast Eric...
One more Q; So would you recommend pulling that Ls Crank Pulley off, and putting the correct gsr Pulley on? To get the correct BALANCE, or am I fine with that pulley?
@MegaMarshal I'm really not sure what the benefit of doing such a swap would be but the only way to know if a rotating assembly is properly balanced is to have a machine shop check it.
@1deedeedee1 You probably should check it as you may not notice detonation or preignition but it can damage the engine just the same. Also, how do you know that your getting full power from your new parts?
@MegaMarshal Crank pulley? If that is what you are referring to probably not as I think they are the same. You really don't want to swap those from one engine to another however as they are a balanced assembly.
I have just now realized that after 2 Honda accords that every time I set my timing that I have used the single mark instead of the 3 marks. @MattTrevett Timing is everything when it comes to emissions so it's VERY important to have correct base timing for good emissions readings.

74bluewolf 5 months ago
thanks Eric for another informative video. What does it mean if you need to go further in rotating the distributor to get to the desired timing, but are unable to turn the distributor any further because you reached the stop point of its hold down bracket? Does this mean you have to pull the distributor out and reinsert it in a different position, then try again?
Amopower 6 months ago
@Amopower I would say the ENGINE is mechanically out of time and you should check the timing marks on the crank and cam to see if they are lined up.
EricTheCarGuy 6 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy Thanks, I will have to determine TDC in that case and go from there. Probes are a hassle to work with, very tight quarters around the timing covers. (94 Probe 2.0L aka MX6/626). If you ever work on a Probe or MX6/626 I will probably download the video to a flash drive to keep it for life, lol.
Amopower 6 months ago
one more thing - if you are in fact needing to go past the distributor stop, which as you say might mean the engine is out of time, then does that imply that your timing reading you get is probably not legitimate, because the engine really isnt mechanically timed correctly? e.g. reading 9 deg BTDC on the light would mean nothing?
Amopower 6 months ago
@7719stu Perfect, thanks for the update.
EricTheCarGuy 6 months ago
@7719stu Good idea for the marks but it's very important that you short the connector before you set ignition timing or it will not be correct. Idle adjustments are done AFTER timing adjustments but you must be sure the timing is correct first. Also make sure that you marked the correct location. Good luck.
EricTheCarGuy 6 months ago
Ok than so eric than since my exhaust cam is at tdc and my intake cam is of by 1 tooth that would make a lot of diffrence than right ? Ok and some times my car won't turn on on the first turn and while drivin and clutch down my car the rpms will go all the way down til the car dies and when @ a red light my car will idle around 500 and just die out wat can it b ppl said it could b my fpr ?
ElCompaBudah 6 months ago
@ElCompaBudah If you know your engine is out of time mechanically I recommend you correct that and then recheck for the issue that you are having.
EricTheCarGuy 6 months ago
hey eric i have a ? i have a 91 integra b18a1 my ? is witch way is retard and witch way is advanced on the distributor and is it the same for the cam gears ? and my other ? is my intake cam gear is off by 1 tooth towards the front of the car will that cause my car to waste alot of gas and make my car run like it has no power
ElCompaBudah 6 months ago
@ElCompaBudah Anytime you mess with cam timing you will change the way the engine runs. Probably the easiest way I can answer your question in this amount of space is that the engine rotates counterclockwise when looking at the front of the engine, anything in that direction is advance and clockwise would be retard but this is opposite for the distributor since it's on the other side of the engine.

bro Eric i have a problem, i want to set timing for my Honda Civic Hatchback but im confused about the pulley of the crankshaft i don't understand the mark, where can i set that mark, i've heard that the mark always in the UP position, the the #1 piston is in the top is it true? then also the camshaft pulley also in the UP position? pls i need your help :) thanks
jtoplinerc 6 months ago
@jtoplinerc I strongly recommend you watch the video again as I go through a detailed explanation of what marks to look at when performing the timing adjustment, the Civic is pretty much the same set up as this Integra BTW. Good luck.
EricTheCarGuy 6 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy thanks bro i already set the timing and it was all correct thank you bro.. :) btw there is a noisy thing in my engine near in my timing belt, i wonder if u could give me some tips if where that noisy thing comes from thanks :)
jtoplinerc 6 months ago
@jtoplinerc Now I realize that you are not setting ignition timing but mechanical timing. Use the white mark on the crank and make sure the cam sprocket has the mark 'up' pointing upward when you line the marks up. Good luck.

right on man nice video!
BigDanMan1212 7 months ago
Thanks for the video, Eric. You're explanations are helpful. I did a b18c swap on my 2000 si and it is running good. But I did not check the timing and have been wondering how to do it. Now I know. Now to get a timing light.

@sixwhip14 Good luck and thanks for the comment.

Never connect a timing light when the car is running .....secondly the clamp on the timing light usually has an arrow... this must point at the number one spark plug...otherwise good vid!!

Hi Mr. Eric
HBGAH 7 months ago
@HBGAH The set up on that engine is the same as this one and I think if you look closely it will say follow the service procedure under the timing adjustment, this is the service procedure. I will say that if the car suddenly got 'sluggish' then it's probably not the timing as that normally remains fairly constant, go ahead a check the timing but in your case I would keep looking for another cause.
EricTheCarGuy 7 months ago
I have a quick question. I have a 91 300zx i did a T-belt job on. I set the new autotensioner to spec, but overnight it collapsed a little bit. Some people say they tighten back up when the motor runs and that the hydraulic arm collapses from movement of the cam gears when the motor is shut off. Could you shed some light on this for me please thank you! It needed to be 3.5-4mm, i had it at 3.5, overnight the gap setting went to 3.25. Thanks in advance.
Dantesdoom 7 months ago
@Dantesdoom To be honest I don't know the specifics on that engine or that tensioner but if it's a sealed tensioner then it should not compress down when sitting overnight, if it does I would replace it personally. Good luck.
EricTheCarGuy 7 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy Its sealed, but it moved VERY VERY little. After the first night, it hasnt moved. The old one had given out, and this is brand new from the nissan dealership. I just wondered how sensitive the autotensioners are to spec. It as a little off, but my belt deflection was perfect.
Dantesdoom 7 months ago
@Dantesdoom If it's new and your belt deflection is good I would say that you are done and it's time to put it back together.
EricTheCarGuy 7 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy Ok this was my thinking...she is done and timing back to the factory spec. I really appreciate your channel and what you do for all of us and the fact that you take the time to answer all our questions! Thanks!

do you recommend buying a timing light with adjustable dagrees?
silverlight76 8 months ago
@silverlight76 It does give you more options but these days most ignition systems don't even use a distributor and can not be timed using a light as a result, I would keep in mind your usage before spending the extra money.
EricTheCarGuy 8 months ago
Hi, i have a Nissan Sunny N16/ 2009, the problem is that i don't think there is a distributor in my car. I mean all the wires that come from the injectors and the sparking plugs go somewhere behind the engine. No distributor!
jhndick1 8 months ago
@jhndick1 Nope, lots of manufacturers have gone to that set up, if that is the case you can not 'time' the engine in the way I show in this video.
EricTheCarGuy 8 months ago
@branco445 I recommend watching the video I did on the Civic timing belt replacement as setting the timing on that engine is very similar to how you set it on yours.
EricTheCarGuy 8 months ago
Thanks for the very informative video! I have to replace the distributor on my 90 Integra and I'm a little afraid of the ignition timing. Your video was helpful but I think I am going to have a friend show me exactly how to do it.

john1989100 9 months ago
@john1989100 Have you checked the cap and rotor for voltage leak problems or carbon tracking? You might also do a compression test to rule out a mechanical issue.

If there is on thing that i love about D17 engines, no disbutor. Just coil packs.
LazySniper 10 months ago
@LazySniper That is a nice upgrade for sure.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy You'll see it on the D17 series, the R series, and most K motors. I found that a lot easier to fix than a distibutor.
LazySniper 10 months ago
@LazySniper Depends on what your used to I guess.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
@LazySniper well these are "plug-n-play", no timing required. The only down is if the computer gets a surge, your engine will run crappy and will run really rich.
LazySniper 10 months ago
im still lost lol
kpath74 10 months ago
@kpath74 Unless you are changing out a distributor you really shouldn't have to do this.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
Eric, what if you have a coil pack ignition system, how would you go about checking the ignition timing then?
nimsu 10 months ago
@nimsu You really don't as it is computer controlled. If there was a problem with timing it would have something to do with a mechanical issue such as a loose timing chain or a faulty sensor, in fact on those engines I don't even think they put marks on the crank pulley.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
@3233656364 Sounds like a loose power steering belt to me, you might want to snug it up a bit more and see if the noise goes away.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy same problem here :) i have an 03 Fiat Doblo Malibu (idk if you know that model), when i start the engine i hear that noise like when you rub a fork on a plate, when i hit 2000-2500 rpm with the second gear on it vanishes, and the same thing happens when i park the car, and i move the steering wheel...what could it be? same problem with the steering belt?
r3ddevill 10 months ago
@r3ddevill Could be a number of things really, I suggest watching the video I did on Finding a Noise to help you nail it down. Good luck.
EricTheCarGuy 10 months ago
FYI update. I did take the Jimmy to get the timing zeroed out. They got it done in less then an hour & told me they didn't need a tech 1, 2 or any kind of equipment like that. They did it manually. Learn something new again.

@Michiganborn1969 I'll have to look into that, thanks for the update.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
i did i shorted the ecu but will not let me get it lined up with the middle of the three points, its an ebay distributor
wpk24rsx 11 months ago
@wpk24rsx As long as you get it close it should be OK, in other words 'within the 2 outer lines' it will be timed. I'm really not a fan of aftermarket distributors for Hondas though as I've seen a few problems with them in the past.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
This is pretty good. I am gonna send you a pm to see if you can help me out. I hope you can.
Intelpentium54321 11 months ago
@Intelpentium54321 To be honest YT messaging is not the best way as they don't allow threads of past responses in their messaging, as a result if we have a dialog it's hard for me to remember the problem being discussed as I get a LOT of questions as you might imagine and it's nice to have the past messages and responses to refer back to. Just click the 'contact' link at the bottom of any page on my website.

@wpk24rsx Did you perform the timing procedure as shown in this video? If not you will not be able to set the timing correctly.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
The votes are in. Its 5 to 2 in favor or reprogramming. Again you are right :D
Michiganborn1969 1 year ago
@Michiganborn1969 The important thing is that you were able to figure it out. Thanks for the updates though as I file this info so that I can use it to pass on to others as well as in my own work.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
You maybe right Eric. So far the vote is 2 mechanics to 2 in favor of the ignition may have to be reprogrammed into the ECM that's if it doesn't re-learn the new position. But so far still no CEL & no codes so perhaps the computer is re learning but until it does I'm getting less MPG then before the intake gasket job.
Michiganborn1969 1 year ago
I will check tomorrow, I will call around & scrounge up the 411 if I need the tech-1 or if I can get by with the screwdriver & a scan tool to zero in the timing & I'll let you know when the job is done what worked.
Michiganborn1969 1 year ago
I was wondering about taking a long screwdriver & insert it down the distributor well & reset the direction of the gear on the oil pump so that way it will be easier to line up the cap w/the #1 cylinder. But for what's worth, even though I'm -7 degrees out of time, I don't have a CEL like I did at -9.
Michiganborn1969 1 year ago
@Michiganborn1969 I'm not sure if your plan will work if I'm honest, I think you have to find someone with a Tech-1.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
Btw this distributor is the weirdest setup. The #1 plug wire comes out of the dist at the 3 O'clock position but under the cap the contact for the point is on the opposite side in the 8 o'clock position.
Michiganborn1969 1 year ago
@Michiganborn1969 I've heard of this before and if I remember correctly you need to take it to the dealer to have it retimed. Apparently with a GM scan tool you can correct the problem. But also make darn sure you have it in there correctly.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
But according the scanner I'm still out of time by -7 degrees & the specs call for no more then +/- 2 degrees (zero is preferred). I've tried walking the dist into place little @ a time but still the best I can get is -7. Do you have any suggestions on how I can fine tune this to as close to zero as possible?
Michiganborn1969 1 year ago
Howdy Eric. Just to let ya know my intake gasket is now complete. The process involved removing the distributor. I have it back in & got the timing as close as I can get it. I had the engine timing marks dead on & the #1 cylinder @ TDC.

Hey eric, sometimes in my del sol, after a shift, especially in 2nd and 3rd gear, when i step on the throttle, this car sometimes wants to slow down even more, instead of accelerating, but 2-3 seconds later, the rpm keeps climbing again, could this be misfire?
davidzzz94 1 year ago
@davidzzz94 No, that sounds more like a slipping transmission. Make sure you use Honda fluid only and check the level with the engine off on level ground to get the proper level.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy slipping tranmission?? well its a manual so i suppose the clutch? but the weird thing is the rpm doesnt wanna climb sometimes, instead it wants to drop harder when i step on the gas sometimes, but im planing on replacing the clutch tomorrow, and im trying to download ur video, but after i paid with my credit card, it still wont let me
davidzzz94 1 year ago
@davidzzz94 You didn't specify the type of transmission sorry. Sorry to hear your having trouble with the video, click the support email link on the Fix It page and email me directly and I will get you taken care of.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy ok thanks it sent me an email the next day giving me the download link, but the clutch is sliping in my car, and it is being replaced, but are you sure thats all the problem thats causing my delayed acceleration?
davidzzz94 1 year ago
@davidzzz94 No but it's a good place to start if it's a known problem. Diagnosis is often a process of elimination and the best place to start is with the known problems.

@EricTheCarGuy yes sir, hey eric, do u have any tips take off the flywheel? lol i dont have air tools, so when i go and try to take off the bolts, the flywheel jjust spins with my breaker bar
davidzzz94 1 year ago
@davidzzz94 Take a pry bar and jam it between the teeth of the flywheel and the block to help hold it in place.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy yep finished clutch job now, but the delayed acceleration problem is still present
davidzzz94 1 year ago
@davidzzz94 Have you checked timing both mechanical and ignition?
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy i dont have the proper tools for this job, but when pluged into a scanner for electrical problems, everything is good, so do u suggest i take it to a tune up shop?
davidzzz94 1 year ago
@davidzzz94 Do what you feel will help I just feel like I've reached the limits of what I can do for you sorry.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy PART *1* hey eric! well i couldnt find what was really causing the acceleration delay problem from anything, i changed the clutch, fuel filter, clutch master cylinder even, and i cleaned the spark plug wires that goes on to the back of the spark plugs with some electrical parts cleaner, good spark plugs and connections, it still had the problem, so i just dropped the diagnostic
davidzzz94 11 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy PART *2* after a while, i just random decided to upgrade my headers to some cheap ebay no brand headers, so i took the stock heat shield off and i noticed a big crack right down the middle of the stock headers, so anyways i just put the new one in, along with a test pipe. But ever since the new headers were installed, the acceleration delay never happened again, and its been almost 3 weeks, could u explain how the crack could be the reason thou? disrupted exhaust pulse??
davidzzz94 11 months ago
@davidzzz94 Any exhaust leaks before the O2 sensor will cause the mix to be off, thus the hesitation.
EricTheCarGuy 11 months ago
@EricTheCarGuy ohh i see, well thanks so much for ur effort for helping! this is another success after all, the whole car runs smooth now, no more problems
davidzzz94 11 months ago
I tried to do the timing on my 95 integra, don't know if it's my light that wasn't powerful enough or it's pully was too rusted, I can't see any mark on my pully... did that happen to you? what should I do?
papercut1987 1 year ago
@papercut1987 Yea the paint comes off the marks easily but the notches should still be there. You might find them on the pulley and pain them yourself with a little white paint to make them easier to see with the light.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
hey Eric, my dizzy was making the same screeching noise in that video but it hasn't done it in a few weeks, but now my idle goes really low when im stopped at a light and some of my early gears are really bumpy, would that be caused by the dizzy? and it doesn't have any idle problems when i start the car, just once ive been driving for a while, and there's no check engine light. thanks in advance
joelkarlonas 1 year ago
@joelkarlonas If you take the cap off and see orange dust inside the distributor then replace the distributor and see if the other problems still exist, I suspect they will go away.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
hi eric, i am still having problem setting my timing. it seems like as I (advance timing) turning dizzy counter clockwise, the idle would go up then goes down again. I am at least 10 deg off on idle and I have maxed out the adjustment on the dizzy. And I can feel a difference of about 10% loss of power when driving the car.
ZaneAngelo 1 year ago
what happends if u have the distributor to the max and the timing mark wont align
westcoastlife4show 1 year ago
@westcoastlife4show Your probably mechanically out of time at the cam or your not setting it correctly.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
This may be a dumb question but if I were to change my distributor on my obd2 h22a honda prelude motor would the computer set the timing for me or would i still have to adjust the timing because i heard that on my obd2 motor you cant adjust the ignition timing
jdmlov3 1 year ago
@jdmlov3 You will still need to set base timing, the computer can only adjust timing so much. Make sure you follow this procedure or you will not be successful however.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
Thanks a ton for answering my question so fast Eric...
One more Q; So would you recommend pulling that Ls Crank Pulley off, and putting the correct gsr Pulley on? To get the correct BALANCE, or am I fine with that pulley?
MegaMarshal 1 year ago
@MegaMarshal I'm really not sure what the benefit of doing such a swap would be but the only way to know if a rotating assembly is properly balanced is to have a machine shop check it.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
i changed my distributer and didt set the timming and havent had any problems is this a bad thing
1deedeedee1 1 year ago
@1deedeedee1 You probably should check it as you may not notice detonation or preignition but it can damage the engine just the same. Also, how do you know that your getting full power from your new parts?

@ZaneAngelo I would say turn the engine off first.
EricTheCarGuy 1 year ago
@EricTheCarGuy
Would it make any differance if I used a Integra LS pulley, on an Integra GSR???

MegaMarshal 1 year ago
@MegaMarshal Crank pulley? If that is what you are referring to probably not as I think they are the same. You really don't want to swap those from one engine to another however as they are a balanced assembly.
