Diamonds and rocks have exactly the same physics. They both topple the same way, they will both kill you the same way if they hit you in the head, and they can both be caught on your head in the same way. The only difference is that you can collect a diamond when it is completely at rest.
For more information, see the comment I posted a few entries down.
The thing is, the NES version doesn't allow you to get hit on the head with diamonds, either. I've tried completing Level 3-1 the way the video shows, and he gets killed. I'm guessing that a game enhancement code was used here.
If you STAND STILL and let something drop on your head, there's a small opportunity (8 frames) where the falling thing will pause and you can move out of the way and still survive. If you don't, you will die after the 8 frames are over. But if you move, then immediately move back under the thing, it will be harmlessly resting on your head. (Note how I move down then up every time I catch something falling on my head)

Hmm, if you could get hit on the head with diamonds on the C64 version we'd all be doing pointless speedruns!

Tough to do in real time, but this was a TAS.

Yeah, I think the first video in this series (wordl 1) actually says explicitly that he used some kind of tool for these runs.
