OMG!! I remember this commercial, like it was yesterday. The Subie commercials in New England were awesome..... especially, when they had Mr. Easy in them. I wonder whatever happened to him. :)
@lucasorcorey Exactly. Back in the day, most were sporty and RWD. That's why I own 2 RWD '80's Jap cars..... an 81 Toyota Corona(not Corolla) and an 87 Nissan/Datsun 200SX... both RWD. The new Jap cars are FWD, uglier, dull looking and heavier. The only good new Jap cars are the Nissan GTR, 370Z, Mazda RX8 and Mazdaspeed 3, Subaru WRX Sti, Mitsubishi EVO, and the new Honda CRZ. Toyotas WHOLE lineup SUCKS ASS... not ONE sporty or interesting car available.
@boofdfast mazda change their name to mazdaspeed? anyhoo was this the old 3 series car they had, i believe it was called a 323?, loved them. i had one as a rental. a fun car to drive i must admit
SO glad you posted this. I remember watching this when it came out. One of the few commercials I ever remembered when I was that young. My Dad bought this car in 1987... thing was pretty sweet.
As it was, the XT/Alcyone/Vortex (different names for different markets) was an intriguing design, particularly the selectable 4WD versions, which went into 4wd mode either by selecting a button, or by turning the windscreen wipers on!
Cool! Love this car!

I built a 1/24 scale model of this car.
As it was, the XT/Alcyone/Vortex (different names for different markets) was an intriguing design, particularly the selectable 4WD versions, which went into 4wd mode either by selecting a button, or by turning the windscreen wipers on!

Just to clear things up a bit, 4WD may have been engaged with the windshield wiper switch on YOUR car, but not by design. ;-)
