Hey Dave I was wondering how do like the muck boots and is it a good investment as a full time hunting or hiking boots I live in Hawaii and was wondering from a person that use your a lot. Mahalo God Bless and Aloha.
When I first started tying flies for fishing, my Dad gave me a small vise like yours, and a small pair of vise grips,(to grip the little hooks) like the ones I saw in one of your kits. Clamp the grips in your vise, and you have a "fine detail" vice. Multi-purpose!!
I'll keep sending ideas your way.... My small contribution for such awesome lessons.
You talked about using different oils on your guns. Isn't it true that you want to be careful which oils you use on a black-powder gun because petroleum based oil can react with any powder residue and cause corrosion?
Hey Dave! First off thanks for the videos mate always very informative. There is a neat little tool some of us use in the Australian army called a bore snake, you might have heard of it? Its basically the same concept as what you have created with the rag and ash but a lot more compact. What would be your thoughts on that in a reliance scenario? Thanks again and peace brother.
Hey Dave, thanks for all the great info. What do you think about different pants for wilderness applications? It looks like you are usually wearing some type of Carrhart like heavy-duty cotton work pants. That is what I usually wear but I am investigating wool pant options. I love wool but I am trying to be objective in comparing wool pants with other pants. You are a wool guy but what about wool pants??
Hi Dave, I was wondering about the small brass container you have on your Yurt table. It looks like it has a screw cap on it. Is it a candle of some kind?? Thanks and keep the Yurt vidoes coming.
Hey Dave i was wondering and thought it would be cool if you could show and do a review on that really cool bow that you have there tucked back in you're yurt, back there behind you're bed?
I've used a casting sinker on the end of my paracord for throwing guy lines (for antennas) up into trees. It might make it a little more efficient for dropping your line through your barrel of your shot gun to add something like a 1/2 oz casting weight. I'm talking about the weights that are egg-shaped with a wire loop coming out the top.
Hi Dave, I think instead of using that video camera that you have to carry around everywhere you go how 'bout using a headcam so we can see how and what you do from your view.
i have used tallow ie rendered animal fat before and it is a great lube but does it not attract dirt debris in the gun or the action also would grit ect do damage to moving parts with the tallow? sorry in the UK the closeest i get to a gun is hearing one go off in the woods some times!
hey dave ive owned alot of h and r and new england single shots 25 06 12 ga 20 410 ect and have learned not to dry fire these like u were when heating it and working the hammer and triger it bends and breaks the fireing pins on them thats the only downfall i have found to these and ive been shooting them for 15 years ive replaced fireing pins in more than half and its alwayse been due to a dryfire just thought id share my experience with them when i saw u do it
Hey Dave, just got one quick question for you about shotguns. My buddy just got an over under from his father when her passed away it a .22 and some kind of shotgun shell and i was wondering what the diameter of a 410 slug and a 12 gauge and what the more likely one was.
Dave, you, like most of us here, spend a significant amount of time with a computer and camera. Both take power. How about experimenting with a couple of portable solar panels that could be used to supply minimal amounts of electricity for the yurt? I'm thinking of a setup that is really small and inexpensive--a common man's kind of rig.
@wildernessoutfitters Hey Dave, I've seen a real good Idea my uncle did. He took an old water pump out of an old car and dug a pond up the creek up a hill and ran PVC pipe down the hill to the pump, forcing water through the pump by gravity. The pump runs in revers, the water causing the pump to spin the fly wheel,he used an alternator and a deep cycle, but you could just use a gen too.. Might be worth trying!
your idea made me remember one thing i saw in some kind od documetary i saw some time ago (can't remember what the title is) where the guy had some flexible solar panels strapped to his backpack so he could charge his camera batteries as he hiked around.
@LeeUmass You can do a lot for very little money, especially if you are willing to scrounge around the solar industry. Using solar power is a kind of soft technology that could nicely integrate with the sort of life style being studied here. Running a computer and a few LED lights makes a lot of sense to me. At lease I think the idea deserves serious consideration.
@LeeUmass Many solar systems currently being promoted are high dollar systems designed to take advantage of various tax breaks. Many are only suitable selling power back to the power company. They aren't designed to get you off the grid. For our purposes, a very small bootstrap effort would be required. Something that, as you mentioned, could fit on a pack frame.
@Kayakwinds Just do a Google Search for Portable Solar, and you can find plenty of solutions, for under 200$ you can easily have enough power to recharge a laptop. A little ingenuity could reduce it further. But as you said, for anything more, like what the average person uses (for TV/Refrigeration etc) is impractical, at least for a yurt. But this kind of back to basics - with a laptop option - should be pretty affordable if you can afford a Laptop in the first place :)
Dave how often do you have to clean the fouling out with black powder? What happens if you let it go without cleaning for lets say two or three times out? Great vids.
Hello Dave, I was just wondering if the pelts on your floor were hunted and skinned by you? Just a curiosity questiion, and Id also like to say thank you for all the videos. I really enjoy them. Thank you, And God Bless you.
Hi Dave, you have been living in this Yurt for sometime now, is there any kind of maintenance that has to be done to the Yurt or is it kind of durable? Many Thanks
Great video, and good advice. I have a regular bench vise, but another handy item I like to use is a good C-clamp. I'd like to hear you advice on the tools that I carry on my woods back pack. I carry a usmc kabar knife, and the coldsteel vietnam style tomahawk. I use the knife for pratically everything, but I find it handy to have a tomahawk/ax at hand.
As always, great video and info. I was wondering about 'what if' the shotgun goes out of commission due to lack of ammo, or breaking. Would small game hunting with your sling bow (using the fishing component so small game wounded won't get away) be a good way to save the wear and tear on the ammo/shotgun be workable?
i think what he means dave is that there are 36 videos in the playlist and the videos are labeled up to 41.. journal of the yurt 39 seems to be missing from the playlist aswell as a couple others.
I thought 2:50 was pretty funny I'm soo.. the same way Dave.. I like to think we think the same. I also like to think being left handed has a lot to do with it. I also being left handed find I think out side the box.
Hey Dave, Love these Yurt videos, love all your video's for that matter, learn a lot, I'm Canadian but I like how you try to buy things made in the USA or at least North America !
you need to be carefull using veggie oil to lube things.. some will turn into a sticky gum after a short time. (soy, cotton seed are the worst) the tallow would be better on moving parts aslong as its a really thin smear. atleast it wont turn into a stick gummy mess
the store i work for an electronic store that sells small vices made from a heavy duty plastic just like those with the screw down clamp, i understand that being plastic it wont be as long lasting but they are much lighter and will grip as firmly
Dave no offense, but I'm not a fan of tattoos. However, the one on your back is the coolest one I've ever seen. I'd get one if I could get come up with something as cool as yours.
You shouold mention that ash and hot water mixed is basicaly a lye and can be very acidic. It if mixed to strong can burn the skin off your body. So be careful people, especialy when you put it up to look through it, the whole acid in the eye thing can be bad.
@robangelakids Wow you are right I do actualy know that but for some reason brain wasn't working when I posted that. Oh well gust another thing I will chock up to getting older... What was I saying?
Hey Dave I hope things are going good, I was reading a comment about your security there at the yurt, I wonder if you could share in a video some of those nuggets of wisdom you have about setting up a secure camp site. Thanks Bro say hi to Iris
I bought a cheap vise about that size at Menards last spring that I keep in a mini tool kit, as well as an Otis cleaning kit as well as a couple punches, CLP, a small brass hammer ect.
Hey Dave I was looking into getting the .22 conversion piece for a shotgun but I read that they don't work on a pump action. I'm new to guns so may I ask why it won't work? And do you know if they make any thing like this for a pump action 12 gauge?
@Cryingwolf81r My thought I wanted to share with you is if you are going to do the 22 conversion buy one of those HR 12 gauge single shots like Dave has I have a few of them and they are very bullet proof and just plain fun for the price you cant go wrong.
@dantz34 Ok yeah I just might have to buy one because i love the versatility they have. Was hoping it would work for like a mossberg 500 or a remington 870 since i use that for home protection already. Just hoped it would add to its options as well. Thanks again :)
I have 2 vices like that a real small pocket sided one and one about 1/2 that side care them with me all the time not quit edc but anytime i thing i might need them you can clamp them to trees rock out crops just about any thing. i have use them for 1000s of differnt things over the years,
Dave you need to sweep out the Yurt, your killing me evertime i see the floor, Aslo you can warm up your bbl on the stove then season it with the tallow like a iron skillet then you'll have to clean less each time, "Bore Butter" is animal fat that does the same thing and its a name brand item. Great Videos, god bless
another good thing about alpaca wool-some people have allergic reactions to sheep's wool, in most cases these people do not have a problem withe alpaca wool products. in my experience alpaca wool is general softer to the touch than sheep's as well.
I love vices like those... I have three different ones similar to that, but my favorite one is a Stanley one that I got for $15 at a discount tool store. The Stanley unit has two ball joints that allow it to gimbal in different directions at any angle so you can mount it just about any way you want.A Google search should find it for you. Also if you have a shortage on steel wool, baking soda should work well as an abrasive for cleaning...
I don't no why I didn't realize that....I'm sure I'm the only dumbass who asked that....:) Thanks Dave. I watch and love all your videos. I learn a lot.
I used veggie oil on my gun one time. It looked very nice when I was all done. I rubbed down the stock and the barrel and all my moving parts. If anyone has ever hunted in the the southern part of West Virginia you know how those hills. When you go up you don't want to come down because they are so steep. A pig came by and the gun didn't fire cause the veggie oil set up like glue. So down the hill found some petroleum oil worked it in and a hour later. My gun finally worked.
Hey Dave, great video. Got A off topic question. What's the IRIS Tattoo stand for. Another question is I know you don't prefer coated blades, but what do you of the KaBar Becker Companion? -THANKS- PHIL, JK
@nbandpa check his channel if you have not yet...back in the 'ol days he made mention of some of their knives...my .02, fwiw, is that you could her more knife for the money with other manufactures.
I have two of those vises, also have hand hand vises. Great idea to put on video. I would guess your age about fifty. I really enjoy your video's Dave. Take care.
@wildernessoutfitters Hey Dave, I am a kid who wants to be self reliant. I have and am reading all I can about it, but you can't talk to a book. I was wondering if you have any tips for a beginner...Thanks
Ok when are you going to show the portability of the yurt or your security around the yurt. Next you have power there, what would you do with out power? Great videos with lots of good info but so far your set up is like staying in a koa campground sorta. Just asking.
@dl52163 There is no power in there bro, I charge computers and cell phone in a house about 600 yards away, if you had to you would use small roll out solar chargers but then I would be posting 1 video a week and not two a day and be out of buisness due to not returning phone calls for 2 days at a time.
@dl52163 Portability of the Yurt was shown on the first day when it was unloaded from a small SUV and set up. Security, everyone is paranoid, I have 2 dogs 300 Yards away and a 3 12GA's in the Yurt I feel pretty secure.
Love the video Dave as you say lets learn together and i always seem to learn something every video no matter how small or how big. Thanks for the knowledge again Dave keep them comming always a pleasure.
Loved the weapon maintenance but I'm sticking with my CLP until I run out before I resort to tallow. Nice alternative and I understand your objective using non modern products. Thanks for the videos. Awsome series brother.
dont ashes increase the chances of rust? i know thats true with charcoal, hence why your charcoal girl rusts out reasonably fast if you leave ashes in it.
Never thought about using an ash/lye solution to clean a barrel. I never had to, but it's good knowledge to have. Mobil1 works great on firearms, especially semi auto stuff.
@AccuracyMarked My cousin's wife dry fired my Winchester Model 12 (center fire 12GA) and the firing pin popped out the end of the barrel. It's an old gun, made in 1924 so there may have already been some kind of internal damage. I make it a rule not to dry fire any weapons. But you can buy dud rounds for demonstration/instruction purposes.
Dave I want you to know how much I enjoy your journal from the yurt.I have watched you all the way back to when you showed how to make a Swiss Arrow.I live in Poplar Bluff Missouri. And have started learning alot of survival crafts. You videos help alot thanks and keep them coming.
Hey Dave, we must be kindred spirits. I have long used the folding glasses and also had a little clamp on vice for a few years now. By the way the latest folding glasses I have come in a hard case and opens at one end like a zippo lighter. Found them at Wally Mart. Been using folders in the field and at work for 4 to 5 years now, still have my first pair don't use them because of scratched len's but the frames are still solid.
Hey Dave also I use synthetic motor oil to lube all my moving parts on my hunting and tactical weapons...It doesnt break down with heat like other oils do.
@wildernessoutfitters most of the time that is blow out of proportion even on a rimfire. i used to teach at a shooting clinic with .22s and mine has been dry fired 5-6k times and works great. on the other hand a i have a .22 revolver that has been dry fired a half dozen times and gets sticky shells some times.
could you do a yurt video about dental hygene like making a natural toothbrush and maybe some herbal remedies for toothache? Survival dentistry has been an interest of mine.
Is there any naturally occurring salt in the deer tallow? If so wouldn't it be corrosive to the metal of your shotgun? Just wondering. Thanks for all the hard work on these vids Dave!
Great series Dave. Just wondering if you tried making Chaga Tea yet with that big chunk you had. From what I've read about it Chaga tastes like vanilla and is extermely healhty as well as great tinder.
As usual Dave great video! Like tysy73 asked would you be willing to share a story or two about your ink? I noticed the browning logo. I have quite afew myself
Great videp Dave. can you give us some more info on what your wearing like the boots who made them and were did they come from I'm making some plans for an over niter and those little details could really help. Thanks for all your work.
I was thinking the other day, how about a over and under shot gun 20 ga and 22, what your opinion on somethung like that, have not found it in 12 ga and 22, not sure if they make one.
Hey Dave, I have 2 questions for you... #1: Say you had a modern decently nice pump 12 gauge 5 shot, but you couldnt afford a single shot break open 12 gauge... would you sell the 5 shot 12 gauge to insure you had a single shot 12? #2: Say you had to bug out and you had this yurt set up that you have now, but you DIDNT have the land you have now... where would you go to set up camp?
@Kellett781 save up. every week put aside even 10-15 bucks. after a few weeks ull be able to buy that single barrel. they are really cheap. less then $150.
Hey Dave, love your videos and I was just thinking to myself, behind every good man is a good woman. Your girl must be very supportive of you and what you do. It's obvious after the Christmas yurt vid that she loves this stuff as much as we do and I just want you tell her that some of your viewers realize and appreciate all that she must do to afford you the ability to make all these videos. Thank her for me would ya?
Dave I am in a wheelchair. I was wondering have you ever did anything with someone in a chair? See I can't/don't have control over my temp of my body, like I don't sweet so I can't be in the high temp like here in Texas, can't shiver. A little more big keys I can't do. Let me know.....THANK YA
I can imagine those socks are great. Have me a Peruvian alpaca poncho I use under my army poncho in fowl weather. It's a great and real toasty piece if kit. Have used it as a blanket a few times too.
In hunting small game and birds I learned to boil down animal fat for different things , for cooking or lubricants , or even small oil lamps ! Give it a try Dave and always good luck .
@cavemanNCC1701 you havent been watched this series have you. he uses Tallow made from deer fat, he mentions it nearly every video.. hell even this video he did !
BTW, That's a small anvil on the back of your vice, which is a handy flat surface for hammering on, and it has a small 'horn' sticking off of it, which is useful for bending smooth curves (such as wires into fishhooks). Also, the mass of the steel makes a nice heatsink. Don't know how well it stand up to a lot of pounding, with that little clamp on your table, but nice find!
Thanks for the video bro ...I'm diggin the Yurt series!
By the way, will Discovery be releasing the 2nd season of Dual Survivor on DVD?

On the vise, it can be used to crack nuts, help make flint tools(i.e.arrowheads), hold arrows for fletching and points. ??

Dave no offense, but I'm not a fan of tattoos. However, the one on your back is the coolest one I've ever seen. I'd get one if I could get come up with something as cool as yours.

You shouold mention that ash and hot water mixed is basicaly a lye and can be very acidic. It if mixed to strong can burn the skin off your body. So be careful people, especialy when you put it up to look through it, the whole acid in the eye thing can be bad.
jeeperoo84 2 months ago
@jeeperoo84 Actually, Lye is the opposite of acid. It is alkyline. But your point still stands, it can do just as much damage.

Hey Dave I was looking into getting the .22 conversion piece for a shotgun but I read that they don't work on a pump action. I'm new to guns so may I ask why it won't work? And do you know if they make any thing like this for a pump action 12 gauge?
Cryingwolf81r 2 months ago
@Cryingwolf81r in a break action 12 ga the .22 con.goes were a shell would go in a pump there would be no way to get the 22 con. into the chamber
dexterlexter123 2 months ago
@dexterlexter123 Ok thanks man I appreciate the info!
Cryingwolf81r 2 months ago
@Cryingwolf81r My thought I wanted to share with you is if you are going to do the 22 conversion buy one of those HR 12 gauge single shots like Dave has I have a few of them and they are very bullet proof and just plain fun for the price you cant go wrong.
dantz34 2 months ago
@dantz34 Ok yeah I just might have to buy one because i love the versatility they have. Was hoping it would work for like a mossberg 500 or a remington 870 since i use that for home protection already. Just hoped it would add to its options as well. Thanks again :)

another good thing about alpaca wool-some people have allergic reactions to sheep's wool, in most cases these people do not have a problem withe alpaca wool products. in my experience alpaca wool is general softer to the touch than sheep's as well.

Ok when are you going to show the portability of the yurt or your security around the yurt. Next you have power there, what would you do with out power? Great videos with lots of good info but so far your set up is like staying in a koa campground sorta. Just asking.
dl52163 2 months ago
@dl52163 There is no power in there bro, I charge computers and cell phone in a house about 600 yards away, if you had to you would use small roll out solar chargers but then I would be posting 1 video a week and not two a day and be out of buisness due to not returning phone calls for 2 days at a time.
wildernessoutfitters 2 months ago
@dl52163 Portability of the Yurt was shown on the first day when it was unloaded from a small SUV and set up. Security, everyone is paranoid, I have 2 dogs 300 Yards away and a 3 12GA's in the Yurt I feel pretty secure.
