  • Ur playing is heavenly

  • Do you have an echo or delay on the low E string only, but none of the others? I notice when you pluck the bass E string, it sounds twice--but I don't notice that you're striking it twice. Thanks!

  • what chords is this?

  • BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHH !!!!!!!!!!

    =D

  • Great video! Thanks.

  • i love the sound of that guitar! btw are you from texas or something? hahaha :)

  • Thank ya ver much!

  • Great stuff! If you are interested more about this train stuff check out TheTwangboy´s channel, specially his train groove video!

  • Alrite!! very cool!

  • What amp/effects are you using here?

  • @ShelsleySpecial I'm using an old echo pedal and a small amount of overdrive on the small marshall practise amp. Hope that helps.

  • At 1:17 : "...The G and the buh-eeee...". Sounds like the teacher on South Park (Mr. Garrison). Hahaha

  • burton doesnt use this kind of pick does he??????????is this the same technique???u say the way i play it not the way burton plays it.i dont think purton uses his first finger like that.any way great job.i just cant do it that well

  • He uses a flat pick between the thumb and index and it looks like he's got a couple of picks on his other fingers as well. There's a good video of him playing here on youtube.

  • @RockinRoyals19 thanx man

  • Brilliant!

  • need to see hand..but sounds good

  • WATCH SCOTTY AND ERIC. THE GUITAR IS LIKE CHET ATKINS SOUND. THE BASE IS THE MOST IMPORTANT IN THE ORIGINAL!

  • E, A, &, B, M'Kay

  • Love that Kay. Nice slap back. Scotty would be proud!

  • Yes! You got it!

  • buh! good song ,nice played. awesome stuff you got there too :)

  • Nice style of playing! Really impressive stuff!

  • Reminds me of visiting Sun Record's. Thanks for that geetar playing. Made my Sunday get a little better.

  • Sweet! Thank's!!!! Keep On Rockin It!

  • verry well played

  • As someone just learning to play the guitar bit more left hand action wouldn't be bad to see. But tottaly enjoyed the video, the sound and found it informative and not too fast for a beginner to learn from. Thank you.

  • @slavetotheblues Hi, check out part two for more of the left hand stuff.

  • thumbs up!

  • Are you picking the "A" chord twice? Sounds like it? Thanks

  • Thanks so much! Looking forward to Part II!

  • This is really close to what Scotty did on the original, fuckin' brilliant!!!!!!!!!

    Keep on rockin'

  • Do you remember the model number of your Kay?

  • @jmayon Sorry, I can't remember, it was stamped on the inside of the guitar and seems like it was one letter and one number. It was a really nicely made guitar although the neck was really big, but I got used to it and it wasn't a problem at all.

  • Great lesson thanks, good boo too

  • WOW

  • If you haven't already heard it check out 'Love My Baby' by Junior Parker with Floyd Murphy on guitar-it was a big inspiration for what Scotty Moore played on 'Mystery Train'.

It's on YouTube and came out on Sun about year before Elvis started recording.

  • i have a kay del ray/this oozes cool/nice vid.

  • Thanks for posting, 88. Love that Kay; I've got a '54 Kay archtop accoustic, she gets a lot of use. And yes, the neck is a baseball bat! Post more, and go cat go!

  • TIP!!!

tune the 6th E string before post it on youtube :D

  • @TheSixtenZone thanks for the tip but if you've ever played while damping the strings, you would know that laying your hand on a string raises it's tone ever so slightly. the string is in tune otherwise.

  • @rockabilly88 hehe doin it all the time , pl just tune it

  • @rockabilly88 You tell 'em kid. That's a great sound and thanks for an excellent lesson

  • I love this video!!

Don't change anything. Let me be the first to say. Failed muscians who complain about minor points like that piss me off. I was playing at live jam with a bunch of guys who bitch about minor crap when they should be worried about having fun and making a great time for themselves other musicians there and the audience.

  • Very nice!!! I am learning this style guitar now and it's fucking cool!

    thanks!

  • Excellent work, you must have put in a lot of time to this song and it sounds great. You've inspired be to have a go at the great rockabilly guitar style, Cheers!

  • Please turn off the echo for the purposes of the demo so we can hear you better. Very nice instructional video.

  • Nice, very nice ! Great sound.

  • Do more if you can. It's a challenge for someone with my experience level, or lack thereof, but it's a whole lotta fun too.

  • VERY NICE, I ENJOYED THIS RENDITION

  • im a huge elvis fan iv been one since 9 years old lol and all ways will be

  • Hey I was wondering if you could explain some of the fills you do? What chords, etc? With the angle of the video its kind of hard to see. Great lesson!!! I learned this style because of your video!! Thank You!

  • love hollow bdy electrics

  • Awesome playing !!!!!

  • This is great man.

  • Fine job but what happens with the A and B chords?

  • Fine job except you leave us hanging after the E chord. I actually got that part from the Danny Gatton video too.

  • excellent dude, and agree with what you say about james,i think that all the tracks were he's covering scotty are a little thin tone wise, and some times think even the later stuff would have been better complimented by a thicker tone'd guitar,he's one of my favorite players as well but his tone is not one of my fav's

  • Love that Kay! Very Nice picking, too.

  • Lust wanted you to know how muck I enjoyed this video! Now I'm going to have to grab my ax and play a bit! Oh, and the little "boo" at the end cracked me up. Sounds like something I would do. Keep 'em coming!!

  • beautiful guitar

  • Yeah, not a bit like any of those guys, sorry. The only thing Kay did for rockabilly music is make Bill Black's bass. But thanks for trying and get your guitar's' history right next time. Those foil Rowes' are from the sixties. Meanwhile,I'll be enjoying my 1936 Stratocaster with it's 1928 martin pickups. Duh.

  • man u are pushing down the first fret with your thumb! STOP!!!! U have to hear that man... ouch..

  • Thanks for the demo Forest...

  • did you also throw in bulldog by the shangrilas in there? cause its similar lol

  • I love Mystery Train! Most guys don't really play the Scotty Moore riff though. Scotty's main riff in is so stripped down and minimal that most guys who cover the song jazz it up considerably just to make it more fun to play. My guess is that Scotty probably would have embellished the part more himself but was under pressure from Sam Philips to always pair things down and lose any Chet Atkins flourishes. Anyway, love the Kay. Fun guitar.

  • Amazing. Inspiring. Awesome. Thank you so much for sharing your talent.

  • man! very nice video!

  • Thanks for the video. I've heard mystery train played many different ways, but your rendition is rockin. Why did you sell the Kay? Do you regret it?

  • Sounds like too much reverb but it's not in a band setting. And really that is more of a slap back then reverb.... nice.

  • no reverb used at all, only delay.

  • This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on YouTube. I really like the way you play, and the sound of your Kay Guitar is great. Thanks so much. Post some more!

  • I sold the Kay about a year ago but I've just seen last week that it's up for sale again, although the new owner has changed the pickguard and rockabilly-fied it a bit. It is a super cool, super sounding and beautifully made guitar. You just have to like baseball bat necks. Thank you for your kind comments.

  • that is a sweet axe

  • nice job, and thanks. I see people here who talk smack and have no videos to back them up.

  • Real well done thank you for the tip/how to and SWEET Guitar.

    gtrjoe

  • 4:07 "BOOB"

lol nice one, you taught me alot !!!

  • I would say that was amazing mate. Simple but effective and the rawness makes it . Not into the slick stuff me !!

  • hmm... a bit messy and percussive, good feelin though! listen to James Burton do it -really sleek smooth and cool cat style!

  • yeah, I would probably agree with you about my own playing, although to be fair, I recorded it in one go and it was a first attempt at youtube. I reckon I could do better. Personally, I find the James Burton version a bit thin a gutless in spite of James Burton being one of my heroes.

  • @rockabilly88 maybe being a bit harsh on james, gutless is not a word i would apply to such a great guitarist. saying that scotty certainly owns that song.

  • this is awesome, thanks!

  • Those Herco thumb picks are great!

  • Cool Dude

    Great axe (nice slap-back echo)

    Great playing...!!!

  • sweet ride... Nice playing too.

  • a lesson?...why can't we see the left hand????

  • If you're wanting to have a go at this, it sort of assumes that you already know how to make an E, A and B chord, as explained in the video. The chord changes are about as basic as you can get.

  • i understand but seeing the fingers makes it a lot easier.

  • um...he showes his left hand when he plays it up to speed

  • that guitar is just gorgeous

  • great guitar!

  • THE EASY WAY TO PLAY ROCABILLY GUITAR:

    Buy a guitar.

    LESSON ONE!

    A. PLACE the screen showing THE VIDEO

     BACK of YOU.

    B. SET a MIRROR in FRONT OF YOU giving you view of both guitars

    C COMPARE!

  • REG. POINT A:

    BESIDE YOU!

If you put the screen beside you it is

    EVEN BETTER!

  • Beautiful Kay! Sounds great with the DeArmonds in it. They probably give it a bit more top end than the original pups. She's a beaut!

  • wish i could have seen your other hand tho!!!

  • outstanding.. great vid.

  • God, I think i'm in love with your guitar.

    Excellent videos btw.

  • GIORGIOUS guitar man! what a beaut! is it white on the sides?

  • thanks dude, very good vid.

  • nice mam good playing keep it up

  • Do you know if the video was called "hot licks" or "strickly rythm?

  • It's the hot licks video and it's on youtube....try a search for Danny Gatton hot licks and it's somewhere in the middle of the video. good luck

  • do you have anymore videos on the internet or youtube

  • I love those Herco combo picks, from what I have heard they are no longer being manufactured (not sure if it is true or not though). I usually pick up a few of the Light gauge ones any time I stumble across them. Good Video!

  • you can still by the Herco picks....at least from Elderly's in Michigan. That's where I order mine.

  • thanks for this(A FRENCH GUITARIST)

  • Comment removed

  • just for kicks why not show the left hand as well

  • Yes, that'd be very helpful.

  • @stevenlennon12 I know I could not see what he was doing, so I couldn't learn, I also think he went a little too fast. So it was really hard to keep up with him & follow

  • I like the pin-up girl sticker♪

  • Does the Kay have a Kelvinator-style headstock?

  • No, this Kay pre-dated the Kelvinator headstock. The kay is now sold.

  • Super Kool Kay now sold. Gone on to a Gibson ES-350 from 1951.

  • would love to see you do a video of this with that warm blues gibson sound

  • my dad and I just picked up a 1960 K100 it's pretty nice of a guitar.

  • cool

  • i'm really into learnig this kind of finger picking, and i think i really may be succeeding in this kind of style. Really, i'm into this, but i couldn't figure anything out of this, except from the idea. Thank you anyway, and great playing!

  • So That guitar is 1,116.71 in america right???

  • I'm not up on exchange rates but that could be right.

  • This guitar is for sale.....800 euros and includes a deluxe hard shell case. Can ship it anywhere but better if in western europe.

  • Thanks for the video. I can play the basic riff, is there any chance you could make another video showing the other parts?

    Thanks.

  • This guy reminds me of Dwight Yoakum. :P Which is pretty damn cool, me thinks.

  • Great lesson...and love your accent, man. To a Brit like me it sounds damn cool!

  • British people liking the way us hillbillies talk! That's hilarious!

  • where can i find such a kay guitar?

  • you can buy this one if you like. I just bought a new guitar! so it's for sale.

  • only 800 euros with a hardshell case.

  • i just realised i suck at guitar

  • I feel that way, too. There are some fantastic posts from some great players on youtube. very humbling. Just gotta keep workin' at it.

  • I didn't know the sound you made with your thumb came from a guitar.

I always thought it came from another instrument.

  • you should also post the video that you got this from

  • If you read down a few comments, you'll find out how to look at the original video on youtube.

  • low E string= FAIL.

  • hes muting it...

  • to squirrelnutcase: it (low E) may be muted but it is way too "sharp"

  • would have been a 5 star if you included all those chords you play with more than just shouting them out. A lot of people can already do the finger picking and looking for more songs to play. Try tabing at least the chords or have them posted on your video. Very good playing and fricking sweet guitar love the gold pickups

  • you can get the sound with a good guitar like him or a gretsch and a fender blues deville deluxe or fender bassman and boss RE-20 effect pedal and your drive from your amp a bit up and good settings

  • How do you get that guitar to have that 'rockabilly' sound. Is it the guitar, Amp or Pedals. Names of any kit you are using please. Jim UK

  • no secrets here, a delay pedal is useful but not necessary, otherwise I use a small amount of overdrive on the amp. I prefer a tube amp but in this video I'm using a little marshall practice amp.

  • I commented months ago... and now Ive learnt it through this exact video. Cheers man!

  • thanks a million~!!! I want MORE!!!! lol

  • awesome when you let rip, really good tutorial :)

  • Awesome job man! I would love to see you do this on an acoustic! See I really suck on guitar but I would love to learn the basic progression as in rythym. Just so I can sing and play this! I sure as hell ain't good enough to do the solo! Again thanks!

  • Wonderful! Thanks.

  • I really appreciate the pin up sticker (?) on your guitar

  • great lesson 5*.

im just learning rockabilly guitar and your playing is awsome!

what scales do i need to play "rockabilly"?

  • very good sound and guitar playes. God bless ya! Keep those fingers healthy!

From the singer of The Lucky Duckies band

  • Cool Guitar man.....nice job....

  • mkay, mr mackey...

    just kidding, sorry.

awesome guitar, guitarplaying, lesson, and all.

    keep it up, brother

  • Sounds like Scotty Moore!

  • Thanks

    Howie UK Wales

  • Is your low E a bit out?

    You have a fantastic accent!

  • almost certainly.

  • If I learn how to do that I might not be able to stop to go to work!

  • Nice Job the original Danny Gatton Licks and Tricks is here on youtube part 2 has this lesson.

  • Yes, this is exactly the lesson I got the lick from. Excellent tape but man, alot of the stuff is difficult.

  • To see the original Danny Gatton tape with this lesson on it, do a youtube search for Danny Gatton Licks Tricks 2. It's in the second half of the video.

  • inspired me.check out 'gypwin' on you tube

  • Wow! That is a beautiful guitar. I am jealous.

  • Hey this has to be the best lesson on the rhythm of this song! Great job! Would it be possible for you to do a follow-up video on the little licks you throw in there? I got the main rhythm down thank to you!

  • Dwight Yoakum?

  • thanks man i always wanted to play this song.

  • That was absolutely Breath Taking!!!

    Superb!

  • You are one rockin hillbilly! That guitar is a gem! I have a de armond myself! :)... rock on bro!

  • it would beee nice if you wanna show with you fingers where you put em when you play, because om a beginner, but good sound !

  • amazing sound

  • you got some kind of tabs on this one. Still need to know the chords ;)

  • is the 88 in your name for what I think it means? (SHARP is watching you)

  • uhm... I'm gonna guess the car. But way to throw out the worst possible accusation from the start. Really helps your cause, ace!

  • haha thx for noticing, your input is welcomed.

  • By the way, are you located in Remulac, that's in France?

    Sincerely,

    The LDO

  • The Legendary Danny O'Doul uses the Dan Electro Slap Back Echo, the Dan Electro Reverb and an ultra-cheap Roadkill distortion (linked: distortion-echo-reverb) and a discount Epiphone LP Jr. with the P-90.

This cat, and late great, Danny Gatton, both use real guitars (although the Kay is a great bargain!) and the Dearmonds are primo condido!

    Rock on,

    Sincerely,

    The Legendary Danny O'Doul

  • who the fuck is danny o'doul?

  • Haha, I have no idea. Not legendary around here anyway.

  • WOW Thats WAS AWSOME MAN !!! 10/10 - 5/5 - 100/100 - EXCELLENT !

  • Hey, nice lesson! Sounds great. Like the guitar and the girl on it too!

  • Thanks for putting this up! This style of picking has always been mysterious to me for some reason. I was able to get the sound with a 100ms delay on a very modest rack mounted reverb unit. The heavier gauge strings do seem to make a difference in tone. I'm using lights, and it's not quite as good.

  • You have probably already mentioned, but how do you get that great sound, whats the trick behind it, pedals?

    Great video aswell mate!

    10/10

  • I use a delay unit and also a small amount of overdrive. The flat wrap strings also offer up a lot more bottom end which you may not hear if using lighter gauge strings. I'm using a small Marshall amp with built in effects. Not a bad amp for a cheap practice amp.

  • The return of the echo machine is lecherous.

  • 申し訳ありませんが、あなたのコメントを私には意味がない。
