Do you have an echo or delay on the low E string only, but none of the others? I notice when you pluck the bass E string, it sounds twice--but I don't notice that you're striking it twice. Thanks!
burton doesnt use this kind of pick does he??????????is this the same technique???u say the way i play it not the way burton plays it.i dont think purton uses his first finger like that.any way great job.i just cant do it that well
He uses a flat pick between the thumb and index and it looks like he's got a couple of picks on his other fingers as well. There's a good video of him playing here on youtube.
As someone just learning to play the guitar bit more left hand action wouldn't be bad to see. But tottaly enjoyed the video, the sound and found it informative and not too fast for a beginner to learn from. Thank you.
@jmayon Sorry, I can't remember, it was stamped on the inside of the guitar and seems like it was one letter and one number. It was a really nicely made guitar although the neck was really big, but I got used to it and it wasn't a problem at all.
If you haven't already heard it check out 'Love My Baby' by Junior Parker with Floyd Murphy on guitar-it was a big inspiration for what Scotty Moore played on 'Mystery Train'.
It's on YouTube and came out on Sun about year before Elvis started recording.
Thanks for posting, 88. Love that Kay; I've got a '54 Kay archtop accoustic, she gets a lot of use. And yes, the neck is a baseball bat! Post more, and go cat go!
@TheSixtenZone thanks for the tip but if you've ever played while damping the strings, you would know that laying your hand on a string raises it's tone ever so slightly. the string is in tune otherwise.
Don't change anything. Let me be the first to say. Failed muscians who complain about minor points like that piss me off. I was playing at live jam with a bunch of guys who bitch about minor crap when they should be worried about having fun and making a great time for themselves other musicians there and the audience.
Excellent work, you must have put in a lot of time to this song and it sounds great. You've inspired be to have a go at the great rockabilly guitar style, Cheers!
Hey I was wondering if you could explain some of the fills you do? What chords, etc? With the angle of the video its kind of hard to see. Great lesson!!! I learned this style because of your video!! Thank You!
excellent dude, and agree with what you say about james,i think that all the tracks were he's covering scotty are a little thin tone wise, and some times think even the later stuff would have been better complimented by a thicker tone'd guitar,he's one of my favorite players as well but his tone is not one of my fav's
Lust wanted you to know how muck I enjoyed this video! Now I'm going to have to grab my ax and play a bit! Oh, and the little "boo" at the end cracked me up. Sounds like something I would do. Keep 'em coming!!
Yeah, not a bit like any of those guys, sorry. The only thing Kay did for rockabilly music is make Bill Black's bass. But thanks for trying and get your guitar's' history right next time. Those foil Rowes' are from the sixties. Meanwhile,I'll be enjoying my 1936 Stratocaster with it's 1928 martin pickups. Duh.
I love Mystery Train! Most guys don't really play the Scotty Moore riff though. Scotty's main riff in is so stripped down and minimal that most guys who cover the song jazz it up considerably just to make it more fun to play. My guess is that Scotty probably would have embellished the part more himself but was under pressure from Sam Philips to always pair things down and lose any Chet Atkins flourishes. Anyway, love the Kay. Fun guitar.
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen on YouTube. I really like the way you play, and the sound of your Kay Guitar is great. Thanks so much. Post some more!
I sold the Kay about a year ago but I've just seen last week that it's up for sale again, although the new owner has changed the pickguard and rockabilly-fied it a bit. It is a super cool, super sounding and beautifully made guitar. You just have to like baseball bat necks. Thank you for your kind comments.
yeah, I would probably agree with you about my own playing, although to be fair, I recorded it in one go and it was a first attempt at youtube. I reckon I could do better. Personally, I find the James Burton version a bit thin a gutless in spite of James Burton being one of my heroes.
@rockabilly88 maybe being a bit harsh on james, gutless is not a word i would apply to such a great guitarist. saying that scotty certainly owns that song.
If you're wanting to have a go at this, it sort of assumes that you already know how to make an E, A and B chord, as explained in the video. The chord changes are about as basic as you can get.
I love those Herco combo picks, from what I have heard they are no longer being manufactured (not sure if it is true or not though). I usually pick up a few of the Light gauge ones any time I stumble across them. Good Video!
@stevenlennon12 I know I could not see what he was doing, so I couldn't learn, I also think he went a little too fast. So it was really hard to keep up with him & follow
i'm really into learnig this kind of finger picking, and i think i really may be succeeding in this kind of style. Really, i'm into this, but i couldn't figure anything out of this, except from the idea. Thank you anyway, and great playing!
would have been a 5 star if you included all those chords you play with more than just shouting them out. A lot of people can already do the finger picking and looking for more songs to play. Try tabing at least the chords or have them posted on your video. Very good playing and fricking sweet guitar love the gold pickups
you can get the sound with a good guitar like him or a gretsch and a fender blues deville deluxe or fender bassman and boss RE-20 effect pedal and your drive from your amp a bit up and good settings
no secrets here, a delay pedal is useful but not necessary, otherwise I use a small amount of overdrive on the amp. I prefer a tube amp but in this video I'm using a little marshall practice amp.
Awesome job man! I would love to see you do this on an acoustic! See I really suck on guitar but I would love to learn the basic progression as in rythym. Just so I can sing and play this! I sure as hell ain't good enough to do the solo! Again thanks!
To see the original Danny Gatton tape with this lesson on it, do a youtube search for Danny Gatton Licks Tricks 2. It's in the second half of the video.
Hey this has to be the best lesson on the rhythm of this song! Great job! Would it be possible for you to do a follow-up video on the little licks you throw in there? I got the main rhythm down thank to you!
The Legendary Danny O'Doul uses the Dan Electro Slap Back Echo, the Dan Electro Reverb and an ultra-cheap Roadkill distortion (linked: distortion-echo-reverb) and a discount Epiphone LP Jr. with the P-90.
This cat, and late great, Danny Gatton, both use real guitars (although the Kay is a great bargain!) and the Dearmonds are primo condido!
Thanks for putting this up! This style of picking has always been mysterious to me for some reason. I was able to get the sound with a 100ms delay on a very modest rack mounted reverb unit. The heavier gauge strings do seem to make a difference in tone. I'm using lights, and it's not quite as good.
I use a delay unit and also a small amount of overdrive. The flat wrap strings also offer up a lot more bottom end which you may not hear if using lighter gauge strings. I'm using a small Marshall amp with built in effects. Not a bad amp for a cheap practice amp.
Ur playing is heavenly

Thanks for putting this up! This style of picking has always been mysterious to me for some reason. I was able to get the sound with a 100ms delay on a very modest rack mounted reverb unit. The heavier gauge strings do seem to make a difference in tone. I'm using lights, and it's not quite as good.

You have probably already mentioned, but how do you get that great sound, whats the trick behind it, pedals?
Great video aswell mate!

I use a delay unit and also a small amount of overdrive. The flat wrap strings also offer up a lot more bottom end which you may not hear if using lighter gauge strings. I'm using a small Marshall amp with built in effects. Not a bad amp for a cheap practice amp.
