hmm...the picture application seems to be a bit laggy while scrolling...is it a problem with the application or with the Multi-touch functionality of Windows?
You don't even know the difference between a trademark and a patent? Do a bit of research, then try again ;-)
You'll find that Microsoft has filed the very first patent on what we now refer to as 'multitouch'. Jeff Han from Perceptive Pixel and Microsoft did a lot of research on 'multitouch', long before Apple.
Apple only 'owns' the term 'multitouch', not the technology (they have patents on parts of the technology they use in the iPhone, but mainly the hardware, NOT the concept itself).
the only things you can do on Macintosh is web browsing, and writing documents. Its pretty much useless in everything else. The funny thing is that it is one and a half times more expensive than windows pcs. People are just trying to be "cool" by having apple logo, and that's what they pay for.
you are missing some functions, like maximizing by draggin windows to the top, or dragging the icons on the dock upwards to get the right click menu... and some more.
I never ever have to clean it from fingerprints... the screen's got a special layer on it that saves it from scratches as well as fingerprints. (it's almost impossible to scratch it without something like a knife)
I also got an iPhone and unfortunately, it is not "fingerprint resistant" like the Latitude XT.
But it is possible to make touchscreens that don't attract fingerprints.
IMO monitor multi-touch will be good for a tablet PC and a kiosk environment.
Can't see it catching on for the home or office PC though. Having to hold ones arm in the air to use it(carpal tunnel syndrome), getting greasy fingerprints all over the monitor.
As I said before, touch is not supposed to replace mouse and keyboard, but to enhance the possibilities of using computers.
I wonder why people don't get that. Nobody ever said that you shall use your computers sitting on your desk holding your arm in the air. That's stupid. I wonder why people even think about that scenario because it's so clear that this is NOT the way touch technology is meant to be used.
Instead, it's meant to give us more possibilities (e.g. mobility, inking, drawing...).
Windows 7 is in a beta state. The release candidate will be completed soon, but this still means you won't be able to buy a windows 7 laptop until around september.
Sorry I forgot to mention that. It's the 6-cell with the slice battery.
But it's 11hrs maximum, which means while doing normal tasks (writing in OneNote, a bit of surfing the web etc.) I rather get 7-8hrs (with Vista it was about 6hrs).

OS X does have native multitouch capabilities. It's had them since at least Tiger, if not earlier. What do you think is being used on the trackpad? Even in Tiger, you can place two fingers on a trackpad to scroll or click with two fingers down for a right click.
There is a HUGE market. Just look at the things shown at CES: Tablets, netbook tablets, desktop with touchscreens everywhere!
Apple missed the train...
Multitouch in Vista works better than Apple's trackpads so don't tell me OS X has native multitouch capabilities - because if it has, then they suck because they're not even better than Vista's non-native multitouch capabilities. Anyways, it doesn't have them.
And where are the shipping products? The only one I've heard of is the Touchsmart and it is an epic failure.
Let me get this straight... You're comparing OS X's native support to Vista's non-native support? How does that make any sense? There are third party multi-touch solutions for OS X, as well. How are you going to deny the existence of multi-touch in OS X? Because it's in the trackpad it's not real? It's include in every shipping notebook, which is more than you can say for PCs.
I have an Ipod Touch, and from the looks of this video the touch screen on it is worlds better. On that HP Touchsmart, It didn't look sensitive at all. It took 4 or 5 tries sometimes just to get it to work. I don't have that problem on my Ipod Touch. I think Microsoft+Copying Apple=Fail
I can think of many reasons why an iPod Touch or iPhone is comparable to a desktop machine. It's essentially a desktop operating system that's been simplified for daily finger use on a device that doesn't have (or need) a wide array of I/O.
I have an iphone and I can't tell you how many times I have to press something 2 or 3 times for it to work. Here's another example, Windows 7 has a piano application that can play chords and scroll up and down the piano and a ton of features that come with MULTItouch. The iphone however can't play up and down the piano, it can play chords but not well.
You probably downloaded the free version of the piano application, you freeloader. The free version is limited to one section of the keyboard. The only reason the chords don't "work well" is because the screen is small. If the screen were larger to accommodate your fat fucking fingers, it would work fine.
I don't understand why Mirosoft are trying to make it sound amazing about touch screen. Tablet PCs arent the biggest seller. Plus sitting all day holding your hand up to a screen just isnt gonna cut it, nor is looking down with a bent neck either before anyone makes any smart ass comments.
Apple may not have created the idea of Multi-touch, but they are the closest by far to perfecting it, even hardware wise. I look forward to dodgy 3rd party touchscreens for windows 7.....not.
Yeah I've seen it, had a go on it at a convention in Dublin at the microsoft offices, I though it was the bees knees at the time.
But its still not perfect, the laggy dragging alone puts me off tremendously (you can even see it in Microsofts Promo vids) and when something purpose built like Surface, after 5+ years of development still lets you down...that's when I gave up on them.
MS' biggest problem/strength is their massive compatibility with 3rd party hardware. In house is just better.
Hm, I never saw it lagging. But as it's based on Vista and Windows 7 is not far away, it will probably get a lot better, because the Windows 7 beta is even faster than XP already.
Hey I never said the iPhone itself was perfect lol
Video of laggy draggy surface: watch?v=rP5y7yp06n0
I have no doubt about it being better on W7, since multi-touch is built into the operating system itself. I know its still early days for Surface to become popular, but I don't think I'll actually come across something like it in a real-world situation for maybe 5+ years.
Microsoft are still the best at dissapointment. No built in HD formt disc reader in my Xbox? What?
You get what you pay for. If there was an HD disc reader, it would cost as much as a PS3.
Still, the Xbox doesn't disappoint most of its users.
Windows 7 won't disappoint either.
Also, there are lots of reasons to be disappointed by Apple, like the iPhone and the MacBooks' lacking features, issues with Leopard and MobileMe when they were released and much more.
What exactly is the MacBook lacking? I have yet to see anyone disappointed with their iPhone. Issues with Leopard? What issues? I use Leopard for hours a day and never have any "issues". It's rock solid, quick and beautiful. The only thing I'll give you is MobileMe. They didn't test it enough before release. It's kind of hard to test a web-based service like that and keep it under wraps at the same time.
Well, I used Vista every day and I NEVER had issues. That doesn't mean that there are no issues. Same for Leopard. Leopard had lots of issues when it was released and it required exactly the same amount for bugfixes as Vista.
The MacBook is lacking nothing, it's one of the best notebooks available.
Still, it's no tablet and it's multitouch capabilities are bad compared to what Microsoft has to offer.
The iPhone is a great phone but it does indeed disappoint because of Apple's restrictions
I had Leopard from day one. The only problem it gave me was when launching iMovie right after install. It wouldn't launch. However, there was a software update already available that fixed that issue right away. Safari crashed a bit at first, but I'm running Safari 4 with WebKit and it's solid. Never crashes.
No, it's not a tablet. Microsoft isn't offering anything yet, aside from an insanely expensive table.
It doesn't disappoint compared to any other phone on the market.
But having a multitouch trackpad is better than not having one.
So don't get me wrong. Apple delivers great products, especcially their notebooks.
But saying that Apple shines with multitouch is coplete nonsense. Their phone shines, but in the desktop world, Windows 7 is the only OS that shines with multitouch.
The one thing I did notice though is that the timing was not nearly flawless, and they should work on how it disappears from the screen when you flick through windows, like it should slide to the left (or right), and the speed should be proportioned to how hard or how fast you flick it. That is just some constructive Criticism for Windows in case your apart of the beta tester's, but other than that looks fine.
Your just using your mouse/keyboard with your hand up by the screen..
Anyway I do agree with your points, but who cares really. Macs are just what? 0.004% of the PCs out there. Macs can not do near as much as a PC can but they can do what most people want in a PC.
I like PCs better because of the Apps I use, people use macs for whatever reason "Im not sure why" All 3 of the OS's are good imo "XP,Vista,OSX" and there is no king OS, everyone wants to do something different and no OS does it all
I think someone forgot to bring there glasses. to make windows larger with a mouse you'd need to hold control and scroll the mousewheel. Now exactly how can he possibly do that with one hand?
It would be easy. A macro programs, so you could macro ctrl to a mouse button. You could just lift the mouse up and hold ctrl and use the wheel, the mouse does not have to be on the mouse pad for you to use the wheel. Or there could be a 2nd unseen person. Plus this is the internets so I don't know if I would just trust anyone.
How ever he has told me that is a beta of W7 with a touch screen laptop "which I looked up and yes it is one" But at first look scam is what came in to mind.
Wow that is so dumb your comparing a touch screen to a track pad, why not compare a touch screen and a touch screen, and we will see who does better. You can easily get a touch screen and use all those features that microsoft took for ever to steal from apple.
If Apple would offer a tablet like they should, I could compare touchscreen to touchscreen.
But, as you'd know if you read the description, my point is that Apple still does not offer a tablet and therefore it's not Microsoft that fails at touch computing but Apple.
@ allah4ever: I hope you didn't that isn't a direct quote from apple, since it would make it seem like people are buying Macs from developers who can't spell or at the least type proper C.ASM(ASM) for an Os.
People still navigate faster and have more control with their keyboard and mouse/trackpad today. Try to sit using your fingers on a laptop screen for two hours and notice the pain in your neck ;) Think there is a reason why apple said that "this don't make any sense to us yet...."
hmm :-? when i look at this video i realyse how much i like my mouse :))... i don't think is to practical to move your hand so much ... but maybe that's just me:P
Does it really matter if Apple or Microsoft incorporates multi-touch, in *this* form, in their desktop and notebook offerings? What dingus wants to have to reach up and muck about with their screen to get anything done?
I hate touch screens, mostly because I don't have hands.

Multitouch in Vista works better than Apple's trackpads so don't tell me OS X has native multitouch capabilities - because if it has, then they suck because they're not even better than Vista's non-native multitouch capabilities. Anyways, it doesn't have them.
drphysx 3 years ago
And where are the shipping products? The only one I've heard of is the Touchsmart and it is an epic failure.
Let me get this straight... You're comparing OS X's native support to Vista's non-native support? How does that make any sense? There are third party multi-touch solutions for OS X, as well. How are you going to deny the existence of multi-touch in OS X? Because it's in the trackpad it's not real? It's include in every shipping notebook, which is more than you can say for PCs.
UbiquitousGeek 3 years ago
the touchsmart a failure? you're funny. the touchsmart had a great impact. it's far from perfect but it's evolving.
OS X doesn't have native multitouch support. That's why the trackpads work far from perfect and even in Vista multitouch is better.
Just because it has that trackpad it doesn't mean it's native support.
If I put Vista on a Dell Latitude XT, the multitouch support is not native either.
The only desktop OS with native mt support is Windows 7.
drphysx 3 years ago
If you go to CES you will see hundreds of multitouch devices, all of them will ship with Windows 7.
And Apple has missed the train.
drphysx 3 years ago
I have an Ipod Touch, and from the looks of this video the touch screen on it is worlds better. On that HP Touchsmart, It didn't look sensitive at all. It took 4 or 5 tries sometimes just to get it to work. I don't have that problem on my Ipod Touch. I think Microsoft+Copying Apple=Fail
gaahhhhhh 3 years ago
Actually Microsoft is not copying Apple at all. They have had their own multitouch concept years before the iphone.
Also, you can't compare an ipod touch to a desktop computer. Windows 7's multitouch capabilities are by far the best you can get on a desktop.
And it works great, it's very responsive and those videos demonstrating the touchsmart failing are scam.
drphysx 3 years ago
I can think of many reasons why an iPod Touch or iPhone is comparable to a desktop machine. It's essentially a desktop operating system that's been simplified for daily finger use on a device that doesn't have (or need) a wide array of I/O.
The Touchsmart is a failure. Ask Chris Pirillo.
UbiquitousGeek 3 years ago
A desktop OS that does not even support multitasking?! come on...
drphysx 3 years ago
I have an iphone and I can't tell you how many times I have to press something 2 or 3 times for it to work. Here's another example, Windows 7 has a piano application that can play chords and scroll up and down the piano and a ton of features that come with MULTItouch. The iphone however can't play up and down the piano, it can play chords but not well.
0m3n1337 3 years ago
You probably downloaded the free version of the piano application, you freeloader. The free version is limited to one section of the keyboard. The only reason the chords don't "work well" is because the screen is small. If the screen were larger to accommodate your fat fucking fingers, it would work fine.

Snore.
I look forward to dodgy 3rd party touchscreens for windows 7.....not.
seanlad 3 years ago
Ever saw Microsoft Surface?
If that's not perfect...
drphysx 3 years ago
Yeah I've seen it, had a go on it at a convention in Dublin at the microsoft offices, I though it was the bees knees at the time.
But its still not perfect, the laggy dragging alone puts me off tremendously (you can even see it in Microsofts Promo vids) and when something purpose built like Surface, after 5+ years of development still lets you down...that's when I gave up on them.
MS' biggest problem/strength is their massive compatibility with 3rd party hardware. In house is just better.
seanlad 3 years ago
Hm, I never saw it lagging. But as it's based on Vista and Windows 7 is not far away, it will probably get a lot better, because the Windows 7 beta is even faster than XP already.
drphysx 3 years ago
Hey I never said the iPhone itself was perfect lol
Video of laggy draggy surface: watch?v=rP5y7yp06n0
I have no doubt about it being better on W7, since multi-touch is built into the operating system itself. I know its still early days for Surface to become popular, but I don't think I'll actually come across something like it in a real-world situation for maybe 5+ years.
Microsoft are still the best at dissapointment. No built in HD formt disc reader in my Xbox? What?
seanlad 3 years ago
You get what you pay for. If there was an HD disc reader, it would cost as much as a PS3.
Still, the Xbox doesn't disappoint most of its users.
Windows 7 won't disappoint either.
Also, there are lots of reasons to be disappointed by Apple, like the iPhone and the MacBooks' lacking features, issues with Leopard and MobileMe when they were released and much more.
drphysx 3 years ago
What exactly is the MacBook lacking? I have yet to see anyone disappointed with their iPhone. Issues with Leopard? What issues? I use Leopard for hours a day and never have any "issues". It's rock solid, quick and beautiful. The only thing I'll give you is MobileMe. They didn't test it enough before release. It's kind of hard to test a web-based service like that and keep it under wraps at the same time.
UbiquitousGeek 3 years ago
Well, I used Vista every day and I NEVER had issues. That doesn't mean that there are no issues. Same for Leopard. Leopard had lots of issues when it was released and it required exactly the same amount for bugfixes as Vista.
The MacBook is lacking nothing, it's one of the best notebooks available.
Still, it's no tablet and it's multitouch capabilities are bad compared to what Microsoft has to offer.
The iPhone is a great phone but it does indeed disappoint because of Apple's restrictions
drphysx 3 years ago
I had Leopard from day one. The only problem it gave me was when launching iMovie right after install. It wouldn't launch. However, there was a software update already available that fixed that issue right away. Safari crashed a bit at first, but I'm running Safari 4 with WebKit and it's solid. Never crashes.
No, it's not a tablet. Microsoft isn't offering anything yet, aside from an insanely expensive table.
It doesn't disappoint compared to any other phone on the market.
UbiquitousGeek 3 years ago
I had the same problem with iMovie.
Only yesterday, iTunes crashed while downloading cover art.
iChat crashed twice yesterday.
I must admit I still had 10.5.2 and updated to 10.5.6 today, but Leopard is still far from perfect.
Check out gottabemobile... so much touchscreen things and no response from Apple.
I had the iPhone but sold it and got a Windows Mobile phone (again).
Right decision.
Apple's appstore and EULA restrictions are terrible (and cause a lack of features).
drphysx 3 years ago
And I think you got something wrong.
I'm not complaining about Apple! (though I'd like to have a Mac Tablet)
But there is a video on youtube which says Windows 7 fails where OS X shines, talking about multitouch.
This is simply not true. Because OS X has no native multitouch capabilities and Apple has no device to compete with Windows 7 Tablets.
The iPhone is a shiny device but OS X on the desktop does not shine at all (at multitouch), whereas Windows 7 does.
drphysx 3 years ago
But having a multitouch trackpad is better than not having one.
So don't get me wrong. Apple delivers great products, especcially their notebooks.
But saying that Apple shines with multitouch is coplete nonsense. Their phone shines, but in the desktop world, Windows 7 is the only OS that shines with multitouch.
drphysx 3 years ago
dude it lags and fails SOOOO much that Im still suspicious this video is fake, thats how bad it looks, and you know it.
feikedoi 3 years ago
And even the iPhone lags and crashes sometimes...
drphysx 3 years ago
The one thing I did notice though is that the timing was not nearly flawless, and they should work on how it disappears from the screen when you flick through windows, like it should slide to the left (or right), and the speed should be proportioned to how hard or how fast you flick it. That is just some constructive Criticism for Windows in case your apart of the beta tester's, but other than that looks fine.
IamtheVOICE123 3 years ago
Thanks for the input. I'll let MS know about that.
drphysx 3 years ago
Your just using your mouse/keyboard with your hand up by the screen..
Anyway I do agree with your points, but who cares really. Macs are just what? 0.004% of the PCs out there. Macs can not do near as much as a PC can but they can do what most people want in a PC.
I like PCs better because of the Apps I use, people use macs for whatever reason "Im not sure why" All 3 of the OS's are good imo "XP,Vista,OSX" and there is no king OS, everyone wants to do something different and no OS does it all
JDRyder15 3 years ago
No, I'm using the screen ;-)
It's a Dell Latitude XT. If you never heard of it you should definitely check it out!
drphysx 3 years ago
I think someone forgot to bring there glasses. to make windows larger with a mouse you'd need to hold control and scroll the mousewheel. Now exactly how can he possibly do that with one hand?
tommybricksetti 3 years ago
It would be easy. A macro programs, so you could macro ctrl to a mouse button. You could just lift the mouse up and hold ctrl and use the wheel, the mouse does not have to be on the mouse pad for you to use the wheel. Or there could be a 2nd unseen person. Plus this is the internets so I don't know if I would just trust anyone.
How ever he has told me that is a beta of W7 with a touch screen laptop "which I looked up and yes it is one" But at first look scam is what came in to mind.
JDRyder15 3 years ago
Wow that is so dumb your comparing a touch screen to a track pad, why not compare a touch screen and a touch screen, and we will see who does better. You can easily get a touch screen and use all those features that microsoft took for ever to steal from apple.
dauiske79 3 years ago
apple is just a OEM
so deal with it
Windows7Videos 3 years ago
If Apple would offer a tablet like they should, I could compare touchscreen to touchscreen.
But, as you'd know if you read the description, my point is that Apple still does not offer a tablet and therefore it's not Microsoft that fails at touch computing but Apple.
drphysx 3 years ago
look up for ModBook
Carloz800 3 years ago
The Modbook doesn't have Multitouch or touch input at all.
And it's not from Apple.
drphysx 3 years ago
hmm those gestures look some what familiar.....o wait I DO THOSE ON MY MAC!!! yet again windows trys to copy OS X
codygreaver92 3 years ago
Wrong. Microsoft has already been working on Multitouch when Apple still not even thought about it.
drphysx 3 years ago
@ allah4ever: I hope you didn't that isn't a direct quote from apple, since it would make it seem like people are buying Macs from developers who can't spell or at the least type proper C.ASM(ASM) for an Os.
Crusnik02Donut 3 years ago
my effort put to waste as I need to remove "you" and "didn't" from my reply, google ASM, C.ASM if you don't know what it is.
Crusnik02Donut 3 years ago
...and the use of all this.....?
People still navigate faster and have more control with their keyboard and mouse/trackpad today. Try to sit using your fingers on a laptop screen for two hours and notice the pain in your neck ;) Think there is a reason why apple said that "this don't make any sense to us yet...."
allah4ever 3 years ago
Then try to navigate with your mouse while standing around or walking....
I bet I'll be faster than you with my tablet.
Why can't you people understand that no everyone is sitting in front of his desk all day?!
Nobody wants to replace mouse and keyboard, it's just about creating new/even more possibilities (and Apple still fails there).
drphysx 3 years ago
ok...some guys here should read something bout multitouch panels and its development...especially WHO invented it..
so far u guys can go on and google who really invented the revolutionary ipod-menu...without apple would be no more..
why do so many guys think that anybody would steal from apple...
flensplop 3 years ago
those losers they stole the osx dock and half of the new features in windows 7 have been in mac for years except multi-touch
muk546 3 years ago
sure... except that the taskbar doesn't work like a dock at all...
drphysx 3 years ago
hmm :-? when i look at this video i realyse how much i like my mouse :))... i don't think is to practical to move your hand so much ... but maybe that's just me:P
bboymiau 3 years ago
You should perhaps notice that there are areas where you can use a PC other than on your desk.
There's nothing better than a Tablet PC in terms of mobility.
Of course a touchscreen is not useful everywhere.
drphysx 3 years ago
Cool :D
patrickjambzlilpj 3 years ago
Does it really matter if Apple or Microsoft incorporates multi-touch, in *this* form, in their desktop and notebook offerings? What dingus wants to have to reach up and muck about with their screen to get anything done?
joecassara 3 years ago
thats a rip-off. first of all apple invented the multitouch concept and it looks like Microsoft stole it.
duit14 3 years ago
No. Actually Microsoft had Multitouch before Apple.
Apple did not invent Multitouch. They just bought a company that was working on Multitouch.
Microsoft had their own Multitouch concept.
drphysx 3 years ago
Uhh, lemme think, No. Actually it was Bell Labs and Fingerworks. Apple later acquired Fingerworks to use on there iPhone.
ztigerpaw250 3 years ago
STFU about microsoft stealing everthing omg u apple fag boys try to find ever excuse to blame microsoft
spungii117 3 years ago 2
response to info in description-
apple has been working with multi-touch since 2002
it never really seen the light of day until the iphone was introduced .
"It's easy to imitate, but it's a lot harder to innovate."
micsowsow 3 years ago
Na, that's only half of the truth.
Apple bought a company called Fingerworks in 2005. That was the company that had been working on Multitouch and the gestures like pinching.
Microsoft started their own Multitouch project, Surface, in 2001.
Oh, and I've also got a quote for you ;-)
"Good artists copy, great artists steal. We've never been shy about stealing great ideas." - Steve Jobs, his Steveness
drphysx 3 years ago
Wow. That last part was very low. Not on Steve's side, but on yours. He didn't say that;
