with regards to formula: did you know that nestle actually operate within the WHO 'best practices' guidelines? every time someone accuses them of not (with evidence), they launch an independant inquest (there have been several high profile court cases too). with the system they have its also hard to beleive that nestle force mothers to use formula. i would welcome citations for your claim however though, its hard to find reliable info for pro boycott (i find its mostly rants).
@riotuesday You are correct, Kit Kats are made and owned by Nestle, with the exception of the US, where they are made and distributed by Hershey. I'm not sure what the arrangement is between the companies are, I just remebered that the Kit Kat label had the Hershey logo on it.
2. Nestle does not own or control L'Oreal, Nestle only holds 30% of L'Oreal shares. Ms. Bettencourt and her family are still the majority owners of L'Oreal.
3. The organization that started the boycott officially ended it in 1984 (The International Nestle Boycott Committee) they found that Nestles new marketing rules for their company were satisfactory, so I assume there is a new/different boycott? The WHO had no marketing rules before this.
@riotuesday I am very aware, but what does North America have to do with a European Companies dealings in a third world country? Nestle helped pen the WHO marketing rules in the early 80's. So I am also sure that Nestle is aware.
I am basically in a neutral stance on all this boycotting, but what I was thinking is, instead of complaining about Nestlé's infant powder milk being the cause of many deaths in developing countries, wouldn't it be more wise to deal with the real problem which is the lack of clean water available? Instead of boycotting, collaborating and dealing with this issue is much greater importance. Honestly, right now developing countries get punished by both sides of the argument.
Jesssica I have talked with farmers and communities that work with nestle and others in the developing world and yes none of these companies are perfect but they dont share your views at all. They value the investment and help. Its Ok for you in your LA pad to spout rubbish you have picked up from friends or google. GO OUT and learn what you talk about. Ignorance is one of biggest issues we face in this world and sadly you are less than informed about the realiy.......
@jrdpwales There are ways Nestle can invest without endangering the lives of babies.
Nestle's practice of giving formula to hospitals means that new mothers turn to this free source of food for their babies. Unfortunately this causes many problems after they leave the hospital, at which point the baby is less able to suck, and the mother less able to produce milk making them dependent on formula (which they must pay for after leaving the hospital).
The formula is often made with unsanitary water which is dangerous for a baby's health, and is expensive to purchase (sometimes 50% or more of the household's income) which both takes money away from other needed purchases and means that the baby is often underfed.
This is, unfortunately, not the only problem that people are boycotting Nestle over. Some people boycott to save orangutans, others for workers rights (union leaders have been assassinated), and others for poor patenting practices.
Do you actually think Nestle is particularly evil? Do you honestly think that most/lots of your daily practices don't result in deforestation and poor health outcomes for people that don't vlog from bed?
@thevinery There are lots of evil things in the world yes, but you can;t just say for example "I wont help those with cancer because there are more evil things in the world". It is about tackling one issue at a time, this is obviously a big deal to these people, so they should change it.
Jessica is one voice but Google has about 695,000 entries for "Nestle Boycott" with reports, stats and deeper background. Hearing from a mother talk about what she is seeing, feeling and reacting to as a concern and one of the reasons she has chosen to join the boycott should be enough for you to pause and do your own research. You're already on the internet - let your Google do your walking.
Nestle is not telling people not to breastfeed your baby.welcome to america where everyone is wiling to tell you how to live your life.

This is all about the misuse of the formula. Where is it written on the label of Nestle infant formula to mix it with dirty water?
If the adult wouldn't drink the dirty water, why would they feed it to their children?
Are these people so desperate that they would eat where they shit?
Next you will be complaining about the label on a can of tomatoes not stating that you are to eat the tomatoes and not the can.
What a bunch of crap!
