  • I saw this enchanting musical when it tried out in Boston prior to opening on Broadway.I was 15 at the time. I couldn't wait for the cast album to come out. I wore out the album years ago-thank goodness it was re-issued on cd some years back. I still play the songs on the piano after all these years.By the way.the composer of this delightful score,Lee Pockriss, died recently.

  • I had no knowledge of this show, just a curiosity. Thanks for introducing me to its musical charms!

  • A note for those who say hard-headed women aren't attractive:it's your misfortune to not know how to appreciate a strongwoman.Weak men always fail to discover the soft side of a strong woman and how interesting she is

  • Thankyou a million times for posting this. I'm a huge fan of Miss Leigh, but kinda several decades to late to have been able to appreciate her stage work! She so deserved a Tony award for this!!

  • I saw Vivian Leigh and Jean Pierre Aumont in Tovarich. Even got her autograph on my Playbill after the play.

  • I didn't know Vivien really sang that much. I mean obviously she did in GWTW but that was like 2 lines. She sounds good for 63' and holding that accent!

  • I saw this on Broadway in 1963, Vivien Leigh and Jeanpierre Aumont were wonderful.

  • OH man I wished this was filmed!! I read that Miss Vivien won the Tony for this show.

  • This is delightful! Where did you track these songs down?

  • Is there any video at all of "Tovarich?"

  • It's really Vivien who sing?

  • Poor Vivian. She had a lot of issues in her life. This was a great show for her. Just terrible that life caught up with her at this time :(

  • Is there anyplace that I can find the lyrics for "All for You"?

  • I saw Tovarish at its glittering opening night. Vivien Leigh was ravishing.

  • I thank you for this wonderful video. I saw an old movie--not musical--of this story. But this one sounds better, and something great to see. The British actors seem to be able to do it all--sing, dance, drama, comedy. Such a treat to hear and see them.

  • I saw this show when I was 13 years old. Vivian Leigh played a Russian royal exiled in Paris, forced to work as a maid for an American family. I remember her doing a few charleston dance steps as her partner danced around her. Margery Grey, featured prominantly in Tovarich, had such nice things to say about her. Vivian Leigh was not a notable singer nor dancer in the show, but she certainly exhibited great star power, and I can remember her glamour and sophistication in the show to this day !

  • Now that I think about it her accent sounds more Russian than French....is it so?

  • As been noted here about Harrison--and about Burton elsewhere and Stritch, etc. -- musical theatre is not just about voice. Unfortuneately Leigh appeared in this show before video so we'll never really know. BUT, she did win the Tony for TOVARICH as best actress in a musical. I like to think of her bookending the Tony with her two Oscars. I could've and should've tried to see the show I was a younger man and thought I'd see her some other time. There was no other time.

  • I love it! Lovely post---my favorite is "You love Me"

Vivien Leigh is the best actress.

    Thanks for sharing.

  • She has a really good french accent. Her voice is better than I thought it would be. It's a lot better than mine.

  • "Oh she wept with delight when he gave her a smile.......

And trembled in fear at his frown....."

  • its my name woot

  • except my vivian is spet vivian

  • i did not know she could sing!!! it does not sound like her.

  • Vivien Leigh almost turned the show down before reading the script ("Ridiculous! I can't sing.") Fortunately, her lover, actor John Merivale, pointed out Rex Harrsion's performance in "My Fair Lady" and how she also would scold Robert Helpmann for giving up his dancing. How wrong she was about her musical theater talents! She suffered from manic drepression for most of her life and tuberculosis took her from us way too soon. Couldn't you imagine her going to town in a Sondheim musical?

  • Vivien Leigh, the Queen.

  • Years ago, I saw a production of Tovarich with Eva Gabor.

  • Really? How was it? Was it a good play?

  • Great. You know she had the same sort of voice that had Glynis Johns in A Little Night Music. Maybe there's something special about that British classical training that produces that quality. Wonderful! Wish I'd seen this. Must have been suberb. Aumont and she complemented each other beautifully. Thank you for posting this.

  • Thank You. I am glad that you like it!

  • If you're in NYC this week you should really get tickets to see the production. It's really quite marvelous! And all the songs have been restored.

  • Just saw a revival of the "original" Tovarich revived with a full compliment of all the songs - 8 or 9 were cut when Vivian did it. Was wonderful! Done by "Musicals Tonight" and it runs for another week. Run and get tickets if at all possible. It's only $20 and just delightful!

  • Wow that sounds really cool...I would love to see the entire play....The songs that I posted in this video are songs that Vivien was in...There are more songs than these which are performed by the rest of the cast.....

  • This was the first Broadway show I ever saw. Thanks for the memories!

  • WOW!! You saw Tovarich!!!!! Can you please tell me of the experience! I would have loved to see Vivien on stage!!

  • Wow! She was good! Where did you get these?

  • I recorded them onto my MP3 a couple of years ago...There is also a CD of all of the Tovarich songs...

  • Yes, she was very good wasn't she? She also sings in the movie "Fire over England" and she sings for just a couple of seconds in Gone with the Wind...I am glad that you like it, I loved making it!

    :)

  • Another lovely video!!! I just have to agree with kdaryling!! Thank you for this and all your videos!!! WELL DONE!
