the stuff they tried back then. I just can't imagine all these soggy broads, shivering and smoking pall malls in front of the comissary not wondering if this would ever be worth it. Hollywood has changed so little. Now it's hip hop...
wow you wouldn't expect idiots to come on here and comment but I guess even idiots can have a little culture in themselves to even fathom looking this up. Sigh they can't be avoid. But I digress excellent trumpet soloist. Wish my tone could sound like that :P
@EmpressEster On the left side is Harry James and his Orchestra. On the Right is Xavier Cugat's Orch. Most of the music you hear in the swimming scenes is probably not by either, but by a studio group.
omg for my synchro team, its been around 40 yrs so we are doing a 40 and fabulous watershow and th opening will b classic esther!!!! only harder. lol. my vid for my team routine will b up soon!
Actually, this amazing sequence was staged by John Murray Anderson, a Newfoundlander whom the New York Times dubbed "uncle broadway". Esther Williams is brilliant.
I highly recommend Esther's autobiography, very juicy, she really tells all. She describes this sequence at great length. She had to be covered from head to toe with vaseline every day so the makeup would stay on, and her wigs were incredibly painful. Plus it takes great strength in the legs to lift your head and arms out of the water like that.
A Techicolor masterpiece from 1945, and my favourite film with Esther Williams, although she made many good ones. Thank you very much for sharing with us this marvellous sequence.
She was such an amazing athlete as well as a showperson. I can't imagine the hours and hours of practice it must've taken to prepare for that performance.
And leave it to Busby Berkley to come up with such a stage setting. I wonder what sort of budget it would take today to top those old MGM musicals.
@orcgoddessspike Actually, Busby Berkeley didn't work on this film, although he did some of Esther's latest films. But clearly they were stealing ideas from him....
Time to re-create this stunningly romantic aquatic film although it can never take away the Hollywood style Esther Williams original or the sheer opulence of this 1950's classic. BEAUTIFUL!
hollywood actors/actresses don't have to put in so much effort today. Those were truly the magical days =)

I once saw a mini Esther Williams documentary in some museum in Hollywood. I cried while watching the choreography: just perfect.

That is so visually stunning, with all the vibrant colours and the great underwater shots! It reminds me somewhat of Baz Luhrmann.
