  • 8:24 God that woman is a bitch

  • I have this thing where I can't be in love with one of the protagonists or it messes up the chemistry.

    Sod that.

  • I watched that handshake & "excuse me" like 5x in a row!

  • @ireland613 saame here lol

  • I do love the background music! Great scenary too!

  • does margaret piss anyone else off at times?

  • Hi to any Goldsmiths English Lit. students watching this because we're meant to read it for Monday. Same idea, eh?

  • Ah cool! Dutch subtitles:D

  • I love the way he says "excuse me." Pure sex.

  • what the hell, the subtitles showing up now

  • Mr Thornton reminds me of Mr Rochester from Jane Eyre. I'd love to see RA playing him!

  • @jliA7 RA is too obviously good looking for Rochester. You're not supposed to fall in love with Rochester from the moment you see him!!

  • @smilingwaterdragon Perhaps you're right, but besides his looks, Thornton's character reminds me of Rochester. In the new version of Jane Eyre they made him look very handsome, they always hire too good looking actors.

  • @smilingwaterdragon ...Timothy Dalton played Rochester and you don't get any more good looking than those dimples and gypsy eyes.

  • Oh he's better looking than a bulldog alright! He's the best looking man I have ever seen!

  • I love how he sighs at 9:24-25. He definitely did not want to leave her! He is amazingly good-looking! I love this miniseries. :)

  • that was the sexiest excuse me in the whole history:P:P:P

  • was trying to give the thumbs up to the comment about RA reading a phonebook, that's a good one. i subscriibe.

  • I like how at the moment when the guy asks him "who's that fine young lady?", he doesn't even bother to answer and he goes straight to her. He's like: she's mine, hands off.

  • I love the way he looks at her....

  • Why must you speak with him???? It was in the middle of a very good scene lol.

  • I wish I was born in the 1800s :(

  • Is that Dutch? It looks like the language that I speak: Swedish. I am sure that it is not Danish or Norwegian.

  • @anitadoubleoseven Yes, it is Dutch.

  • I love reading these comments too. So many insightful women here :)

  • @ILikeOrangeTicTacs LOL! :D (female watching this voluntarily)

  • "Who is that fine young lady?"

His eyes find Margaret. OF course.

  • What up with the subtitles?

  • I love reading the comments :D

  • I love reading the comments before starting the video, it makes me all the more excited to watch....Even though I have seen the series before, its like Im watching it for the first time : D

  • Comment removed

  • It almost as if Mr.Thorton feels sorry at 9:24 that he has to be excused from talking to Margaret.

  • He's got brooding down to an art form...

  • whats up with the dutch subtitles????? soooooo annoying

  • Comment removed

  • he talks like he's having sex... OMG I think I love him :)

  • OH MY GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWD

  • funny how suddenly there are Dutch subtitles! Hehe! :-D

  • "i'm sorry your mother was unable to join us." XD the sultry look on his face would suggest otherwise

  • I swear that they have the workers clock going slow that they work even longer.

  • Aah.. ik wil deze serie op dvd...

  • i honestly think im in love with john tornton

  • 8:47-8:56 Did she not like that he was chatting up that other girl that she reached for his hand? hmmm. gotta make my move now or never. oh margaret.

  • actually I like the part in the party after the handshake when that other man wanted to speak to him and he gave a small sigh that to me meant "ah dammit now I have to tear myself away from you to talk about utter crap, when I really just want to be with you..."

  • @CerebralCreation at first I thought he was talking about fanny, but when I read the book it was Margaret. So Thornton sure enough is not going to allow that dude to take his woman. okay.

  • Gawd. Richard Armitage was made to play John Thornton.

  • Dutch subtitles! Perfect for me :) Thanks

  • He is absolutely gorgeous.

  • I LOVE the way he says "excuse me" at 9:25 and the way he looks. He is truly disappointed and sorry to be leaving her and not being able to talk!!!!

  • I actually can't stop watching that part when they shake hands... <3

  • Thornton has such a crush on Margaret. You can tell by his eyes, they way he looks on her. I bet he wished all the people gone from the room so he can have her for himself :D

  • Haha what are the reasons for the subtitles??

  • @ILikeOrangeTicTacs 90 women disagree with you. That does not bode well for your love life. ;)

  • Milton definitely needs child labor laws...

  • Question: Good director, or is Armitage sweet/sensitive enough to come up with stuff like the hand caress on his own... If its the latter I think I found my future husband. I'm just gonna forget our 17 year age difference. I'm sure he can deal with a younger woman. lol

  • @vegetables88 lmao!

  • why oh why was I born in the wrong century?

  • @nastyatrianta AMEN. i totally feel ya.

  • Richard & danelia both together makes north & south work!!!

  • I love love love this miniseries, but it annoys me the way they just stuck some random girl in there to make Margaret feel jealous through the whole show. And the way they make Thornton seem like a total jerk at times. In the book he's a nice guy and Margaret is just too stuck up for him. I suppose it makes the audience like Margaret more, but poor Thornton is just instantly hated, and making him seem like he just moved on to a different girl is irritating.

  • So....He and his mom def have an accent. Well, they all do, but his sister sounds southern british. Him and his mom sound....different. like Irish maybe? I dunno, they came from poor backgrounds apparently so maybe its just a thick from the street accent.

  • Whew, my goodness his voice is DEEP. and when he says, "excuse me" at 9:25 he looks like...Dang it! lol

  • Thank you so much for putting this up! I have the DVD but I'm watching it here because I'm away at uni and this was just what I needed! I'm not complaining, just curious, are there some scenes cut out? I seem to remember quite a few of the scenes being longer on my DVD. Maybe I'm going mad? Anyway, thank you!

  • @phindall yeah there are scenes cut out. there must be 2 versions of this or something b/c when I first saw this on netflix it was this edited version, but when I got the DVD the scenes were longer. someone needs to upload the UNedited version! lol

  • Oh Mr. Thornton. He's so sweet. Why can't Margret see that.

  • The family friend calls her a goddess and the father thinks he is making a joke, Thanks dad!

  • Dear Thornton, read me a phone book!

  • His voice is so damn sexy.. He could read me a phone book for all I care.. lol

  • Yeah his hard sexy look really gets to me lol

  • Those subtitles threw me for a bit of a loop there. I am so used to reading subtitles that I immediatly read them only to find I cant! I got better.

  • @TangoMarine007 - LOL ... me too! I did exactly the same :)

  • I just adore Margaret's character.

  • I love how he didn't want to let go of her hand....and he said he was safe *scoff*

  • Watching this clip again I only just realized the look of utter and complete enchantment and confusion, as if touched her hand and couldn't quite understand why he felt so unwilling to let it go.

  • aww... the poor strikers! :( im so proud of them!!

  • OMG the wat he looks at her!!!!! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH its so intense

  • annoying subtitles

  • I just realised I've never liked a classic hero more - not even the cliched ultimate hero Darcy. Thornton is an exquisite creation, with his resonant, steadfast strength, his fierce loyalty, his unflinching pride in the face of destruction, his utter lack of pretension and snobbishness- and his gentle, compassionate side which suddenly emerges and catches everyone by surprise. He is a true MAN in every sense of the word, and for all his unrelenting fierce countenance is heart-stopping.

  • @StrangerToEarth darcy is not a cliche....you need to learn about genre before going off at a tangent

  • @Shanniquitie Do I need to learn more about the traditional structure of a Victorian romance novel and the usual values attributed to the classic Victorian hero? Do I need to do a bit more research into it to discover that Darcy set the cast for thousands of period literature figures to come, surpassing even the popularity of the Byronic hero - thereby SETTING a cliche? Do I need to go into how even Thornton takes a little after him; how whole books have been written after his figure?

    Nah.

  • @StrangerToEarth thanks for correcting yourself in that random rant :) i am appeased

  • @Shanniquitie

Mr. Darcy did not have a job. Earning 10, 000 a year from "some" source. Mr. Thornton a self-made man. He is better than anyday from Mr. Darcy

  • @Roy5631 Mr Darcy owned a large estate so he had tenants- farmers and such. Mr Thornton is a new kind of man admittedly.

  • Wow this is a pleasant surprise =D

I'm Belgian and suddenly there appear Dutch subtitles xD

  • "He's better looking surely than a bulldog." LOL

  • i found myself wanting to walk over and slap Ms. Latimer's hand out of Thornton's.

    GTFO woman he's mine!

  • @movieluvr69 lool

  • Be still my beating heart!

  • Notice the movements of his chest from about 9:19 to 9:26. Poor John

  • Mr.Thorton has an evil and sexy look! I like it!! xDD

  • thornton looks so pained to excuse himself....*swoon*

  • The fear on mother and son's face was so real & priceless bcos it felt like history is repeating itself.

  • OMG. that hand shake / fingers sliding OMG ! I love it. So damn sexy . They don't even have to kiss. Its these little things that are so damn sexyyyy hahaha. geeeez

  • @samoan909 we also called it "victorian hand-porn" lol

  • Sexiest handshake ever.

  • ohhh damnnn the way he says "excuse me" with a lingering look in his eyes!!!

    soo HOT!

  • margaret hale, is very very very pretty.

  • @Hanraoi What I appreciate is how he was reluctant to leave! <3

  • LOL, I love how the guy who asked, "Thornton, who's that fione young lady?" gave Thornton a, "Wait, what the fuck...?" look when HE went up to greet Margaret instead of him.

  • I wish I was her hand.

  • @Lynn15 I'm with you on that one. ;w;

  • @Lynn15 AHAHHA. Agreed, but I still LOL'd when I read that.

  • Gah... HE is fiiiine...

  • 1st off. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU FOR UPLOADING!!!!!!!!! LOVE THIS MOVIE!!!!

    2nd Margret is BEAUTIFUL!!

3rd Mr. Thornton is THE most BEAUTIFUL MAN IN / ON THIS PLANET! I LOVE HIM!!!!!!!!

    4th i LOVE BBC!

  • the way he frowns when he says excuse me is just too cute!

  • In the book it says that she's wearing "white silk" with a "coral beads" necklace ,not that horrible green dress...

She would have looked much better that way...

  • @june251979 i've jus finished reading the book, its excellent..so much more feelin in mr thornton than this film portrays!

  • @k4ur93 I know... I've read it too,it was great...

But I liked the film too...a lot...

Have you seen The Painted Veil?it's posted on Youtube and it's just as good...

and the book too...I finished it a week ago.Deeply recommend it.

  • @june251979 cool...i'll check it out..thanks for the recommendation! :)

  • @k4ur93 I promise you won't regret...

I know a good movie when I see it.

  • I love how he says "excuse me" around minute 9:50 as if he's in pain of leaving her...(sights)

  • richard armitage is such a good actor.

it's all in the eyes <3

  • LOVE the music from when the strike begins...just beautiful...

  • I LLLLLOOOOOVVVVVVEEEEEEE Richard Armitige

  • That closeup of their fingers caressing each other is WAY hotter than any sex scene I can remember ever seeing. Ahh, if only Hollywood understood! If only we still valued the emotional impact of simple touches like that!

  • @Sarandib22 I was going to remark on that too! I noticed the way he sort of let his fingers caress hers as their hands finally parted... Much sexier than an all out sex scene...

  • @Sarandib22 my sentiment exactly!!!

  • @Sarandib22 you cant expect hollywood to understand because its filled with rich perverts.

  • @Sarandib22 I second that! They just don't have moments like these in movies any more where they just touch and the two just connect!

Margaret is wearing an awesome dress! It shows what needs to and hides others to give a more seductive look and Thornton is loving it!

  • @Sarandib22 i agree. expose your body to make more money is so played out.

  • @Sarandib22 YES YES YES!!!!!!!

  • @Sarandib22 Very well said! Hollywood has done away with "wholesome" t.v.!!!

  • For some reason I love how their fingertips brush against each other when they let go of each other's hands. It's a sure hint of what's to come! ;)

  • Oh Gosh, i love how he says 'excuse me' and the look on his face and I LOVE reading your comments!

  • Man, its so hard to watch this. We are in a recession now, and even though we arent seeing quite as much suffering I know many people who have lost their jobs and just wondering..where is the light at the end of the tunnel?

  • I love how instead of introducing the mill owner that asked him who is "that fine young lady", John just walks away from him to talk to Margaret himself now that she is standing alone.

  • haha, i know that's so awesome!

  • Honestly, do any of you care about what the author was trying to convey with this novel. Or is all you care about how handsome this RA is. "He's so charming" more like he is so evil. I swear if the devil himself was attractive you would all swoon for him.

  • @shinojosa8 No, but why not appreciate a handsome man when we see one. Of course we care about what the author was trying to convey...why else would we watch this? Just for him?? Nah, if we wanted just to see his face we would go to Google Images. So cheer up, we care! Seriously.

  • Yes, I agree Richard Armitage is exceptionally handsome. I did enjoy this novel and this adaptation a great deal. It is just disconcerting to see all discussion of this incredible tale center around the looks of RA. I still do not think that this movie at all convinces one of how she could fall for such a man.

From what I understand Gaskell felt that she was rushed by the publishers. So she was not even satisfied with how it ended. Never fear I am always cheerful.

  • I totally agree. Their relationship until the end (last 5 minutes) is very harsh. It goes from bad to worse, to extremeley depressing, to love. I can see how it was rushed. And I am glad you are cheerful! : ). I do believe though that how we see Thorton change from "master" to human being is one of the ways the movie shows how they could be in a relationship. They become the same person. He becomes more civil with his workers and she learns that money controls everything.

  • @shinojosa8

Well Iwe most asume that most people doesn´t care about the authors intentions. Me myself started to watch this cause RA was on the story though I`d like to read the book afterwards to understand better. Although Mr. Thorton doesn´t seem to me an evil man. Harsh and stiff. A man of character and violent at times but he does what to him seems to be right thing. He protects what he´s raised and he is true to his word.

  • @vabegaca

I agree, i dont find Mr. Thornton an evil man at all. Even in the book, he wasn't at all evil, like you said, harsh and stiff, maybe a bit mistaken, but not by any means evil.

  • Oh my God,so much sexual tension in that handshake scene...my ovaries almost exploded!!!

It's amazing how such a simple gesture can convey so many emotions!

  • Is not the simple gesture, is the build-up to it :)

  • LOL!

  • @itsjustanickname hahaha your poor ovaries!

  • I love how RA's face looks when RA says "Excuse me" to Margret. He looked almost tortured that he had to leave her! And that handshake!! PERFECT!

  • Totally agree with you. The handshake clearly shows her feelings too with the stroke of the fingers. Love it!!

  • I can imagine he looks almost tortured to leave her. She looks great in that dress and is very pretty.

  • Strike....God/humanity does not like greed!!!!

  • Margaret is so beautiful and it seems her heart is full of warmth. I really like her. And Thornton... oh my ;) He's so charming.

  • RA has a look his face when Margaret shakes his hand that's like ' this is the best damn handshake i've ever had' who knew the handshake could be so intimate and sexy

  • Thorton is so hot!

  • LOL @ the random appearance of Dutch subtitles.

  • @urbanr0cker hey, i'm not protesting. xD

  • @urbanr0cker It pleased me, actually, as it is a language I read. :)

  • @urbanr0cker It shows how ridiculous that language can be ;). Part of what they say isn't even translated. Subtitels always draw my attention away from what's happening, one of the reasons why I prefer to watch movies in their original language.. (but Dutch also can be beautiful sometimes)

  • Comment removed

  • LOL! so bloody true! a teenaged friend of mine is obsessed with RP´s aristocratic, proud look and me with RA because of the same reason...lol.

  • I just want 2 lick him! Hahahaha as weird as that sounds i just want 2 ;)

He is sooooo expressive in his revelation of emotion it makes my heart melt! N i no all the tricks as im a actress- but damnnnnn i wanna b her!

  • Yes, that look he gives her at his friend's inquiry about the "fine young lady" speaks volumes. RA is good with showing his character's feelings through his eyes. When she takes his hand, it appears that Thornton's guard is let down a bit. The chemistry between RA and DDA is extrodinary.

  • i can't think to Thornton without remembering him as Guy from Robin Hood, but i adore him all the same. haha

  • If he touched my hand like that, I would've humiliated myself by fainting! hahaha

  • i think gaskell's writing is up there with the greats like jane austen and charles dickens ..thanks for the upload this is my second time whatching the first time i was distracted so now im paying close attention:)

  • very charming bbc production :) I love Thornton he'so gorgeous with a commanding presence

  • I didnt think it was possible, but he's even more devastating when he smiles.

  • @MandyBlair21: Maybe it's because when he smiles you suddenly sees that behind this rather stern exterior there is a person you can actually like and relate to ;)

  • I never even noticed the subtitles:)

    To enthralled.

  • the subtitles are dutch, not german

  • aahh...I love the way he looks at her, even after they're don't shaking hands. :)

  • done*

  • ooooh that handshake made me shiver! the way their hands lingered... it just tugs at my heart!

  • And German subtitles...!

  • Comment removed

  • Yea, I actually figured that out later. Possibly when I realized that it was prettier than German.
