I visited the islands in October '08 and found an overwhelming little place on earth. Maybe it's the mix from above and underwater beauty and the touchable dark history. I think you captured that really well.
The corral gardens, caves and steep wall at the south west point of pulau Hatta (Rosengain) were back then in perfect shape, personally my best diving ever.
Noooo!!! not the Ciremai!!!! It looks all clean in this video but when I went on it there were about 4000 people and 40,000 cockroaches. Nice video, wonderful islands.
Exactly my experience unfortunately. I took a "first class" cabin where I spent most of the time squishing cockroaches. Too bad because it is relatively new and otherwise a nice little ship.
True, cockroaches paradise on these ships. I have been on the KM Bukit Siguntang to beautiful Banda and it was the same. But to be honest, I didn't care to much. ;)
Thank you evanelpus. You must have sensed the deep sadness that fell upon me while observing the tragedies resulting from the human pursuit of despicable intents (the saddest part: it still happens today and not only in remote lands).
Nice video, dude. Too bad about the condition of the coral around the islands these days eh, the Hatta-dropoff etc. are but a shadow of their former shelf.
Fascinating place nevertheless and one worth preserving fo the future generations. Sebetulnya Maluku seluruhnya merupakan daerah yang paling indah paling istimewa di se-Indonesia.
Btw, and the "last perkenier", Wim van der Broeke that was murdered in 1999, was Indonesian, not Dutch, despite his obvious colonial heritage. Anyone know if the new church in Bandaneira has been opened to the public yet? It'd be about time for the christian population to be able to come back as well, they've been into exile for long enough now.
I am not a coral expert, however it seems to me that while the corals have lost their vivid coulors (bleaching) generally they appear to still be alive.
During my stay there I heard that the Bandaneira christian population left out of fear even if no one was actually hurt. There is therefore a chance for them to go back. If they did they could perhaps restore the Dutch cemetery that is in terrible conditions.
In addition to the bleaching, there's also a considerable amount of anchor-damage and even signs of dynamite-fishing even though this is supposed to be a huge no-no among the fishermen there (as they basically understand that the coral is something worth taking care of).
Yea the christian population left voluntarily as the atmosphere turned sour and they aren't coming back, at least not before Bandaneira's church is in a working condition again...
You are too kind; thank you very much, Vittorio

Brunvit has a nack for combining in his video's, both the exotic scenery and profound social and political comment.
