@ch3rrysunbur5t I think you'll find this was a pretty accurate projection to the mood of the British public in 2008; Britain did go to the polls in 2008 for the local elections - Labour lost 9 councils and the Tories gained 12.
@ch3rrysunbur5t The last time I checked, they show the headlines from The Mirror and Guardian, too. If there is any bias going on the british media it is plainly at the BBC. They recently hired a Labour candidate to monitor their political coverage and make sure it was "balanced" - can anyone conceive of anyone more inappropriate for such an important task? There are so many examples of their tendency to toe the Labour party line.
The Lib Dems are the most opportunist party in British politics. They have no principles - other than sitting on the fence at all times to avoid upsetting any moderates.
They saw the Iraq war (the tragedy that it was) as a way of mopping up protest votes from Labour and the Tories. How principled is that?
hmmm my feeling is it will be a hung parliament with the Conservatives short bu 15. Which means we may have to go through it all again later in the year as we had to do in 1974
I agree with you on that. I think it's becoming quite clear that '10 will not be a landslide victory for the Tories like '97 was for Labour. There are several reasons; Cameron has to win as big a swing away from a governing party as Attlee secured for Labour in '45. He has a mountain to climb, to be sure!
Add in the erosion of support away from all 3 main parties, much of it a result of Labour's decade of spin (sexed up dossiers, anyone?), exacerbated still further by the expenses scandal and you begin to see what a huge task the Tories have of convincing anyone they deserve to be in Govt. But their message on cutting the deficit IS getting through. To a lesser extent, his narrative on localism and ending big government is starting to gain traction - but it will take time.
If I were a betting man, I'd put a wager on Cameron winning the 2010 election with a modest, but workable majority - of somewhere between 30 and 50; he's unlikely to win more than that.
Hopefully he'll be able to beef up the Tory vote in subsequent elections - we know from experience that sound Conservative government will be rewarded by the people at the ballot box. Let's hope (for all our sakes) he gets it right in the first term.
I thought Nick Robinson (BBC) made a very astute point the other day. The strength of the Labour vote will really depend on whether or not the British people can complete the following sentance;
"I want another five years of Gordon Brown because..."
Can anyone really finish that statement with a straight face? Even Labour MPs don't believe the party lie anymore!
ahah. Well, i want another five years of gordon brown (not him specifically really...) because the conservatives ruined my hometown, and im not going to forgive them for it for a long time. Though, to be honest, i might vote liberal democrat. that way i don't have to support brown, im voting for someone, effectively giving the tories the seat, but not voting tory...so i can have a clear conscience =p
we need a consertive govermeant it will be touth in the beging but one briten gets beteer so will the rest lower takes thanks to cuting on spending no wast and money spent proberly. lower income take lower rates and i hope they lower full taxs
In trouble? How quickly politics changes. Since the time you wrote this he lost some seven ministers, and those polls you gave were pretty much confirmed.
This guy has no option left but to resign and dissolve parliament.
Remember that god awful first Summer after he took office, and everyone was tripping over themselves to congratulate him for a Statesman like handling of the floods and foot and mouth? He didn't do anything - just read a couple press statements (not very well I might add).
Then the election that never was and he was humiliated, poll ratings in the ditch ever since. It's the nature of the beast.
But his wreckless economic policy will catch up with him...
Its funny how in an economic slump all merit seems to disappear! Brown has been the best chancellor the exchequer of recent times! If Thatcher hadnt taken such measures of deregulation of the economy this slump would not b half as bad in the UK!
Also im sick of people complaining about brown. This economic crisis is GLOBAL. Browns not responsible for the world's economy. Wat we need is less bonus' 4the bankers, more social equality. Labour has not done this, and the tories will do even worse.
This is hysterical. You blame Thatcher's deregulation as part of the economic crisis, but Brown, who followed almost exactly Thatcher's own economic policies, is not at fault because the crisis is "global."
Both the Conservatives (under Cameron, anyway) and Labour are piss poor countries. Although I don't know how the UK could get worse than under 11 years of Labour mismanagement.
But if you are so confident on Brown, why not just have that election called? It should be an easy victory!
So you agree with me its the polices originally started by thatcher caused major crisis in our economy, and that Labour should have done more to move away from Thatcherism.
'Both the Conservatives (under Cameron, anyway) and Labour r piss poor countries' I dont quite understand this line but what im saying is neither r amazing.
And indeed even I am nt voting Labour June 4, but what i am sayin is the public expect magical fixes, when even obama cant bring this, simply because it is global
Don't remind me. Up until the Tory conference that year I was tearing my hear out at the polls and all the vomit-inducing praise he was getting. I won't forget Tebbitt and Ancram's digs at Cameron in those dark days either.

No, I apologize.
