  • absolutely amazing footage! thanks for sharing.

  • Just when I think I've pretty much heard everything that this great band has produced, they surprise me again - this time with this amazing video.

OK, I take it back. Cancel that "I didn't ask to be born!" crack I made in 1952 ('57, '61, '65, etc.).

  • that's no chick......that's my DAD!!

  • @rambid ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha - that's funny!

  • who's that weird 3rd chick dancing around on stage?

  • so depressing ! I just don't recognize them..

  • @wdmounger You are so right ya. Any girl fronting a great band like this who looks like she is dressed in a frock her mom sewed for her has my respect and admiration. Damn she looks like Judy fkn Garland.

  • Trippy indeed

  • Man thats good! my favorite tune. thanks!

  • OMG. Just found this. What a great version of this song. It has a bit of a Jefferson Airplane touch to it that I like.

  • Kate, you're my dream lady!! <3

  • I saw the B52s in San Diego in the early 80s and I've never seen so many people dancing at a concert before or since.

  • Really fantastic! Were was this shot. Saw them last month they are still a rush to see live. Thanks for this. Look at Kate just beautiful still is. Cindy so young.

  • Really fantastic! Were was this shot. Saw them last month they are still a rush to see live. Thanks for this.

  • @PanekPL Yep, dude one of the best concerts I've ever been to =D

  • @qdos10 Im with ya. Ive been to a lot of concerts in my life, seen a lot of big acts and big names perform, but NOTHING comes close to a B52s show. The energy level is amazing. Everyone, if you see the B52s are going to be performing near you: go see them. You wont be disappointed.

  • nice version and vid, they capture the real mood and potential of the song

  • Is Fred using make-up?

  • @dinho01 . Yes. He is gay. The only one in the band who wasn't is Cindy Wilson.

  • did kate really have hari that long then? looked good in long hair, fall or not.

  • these guys are the best fuck everyone else.

  • The Good Hole Daze

  • Vince Loves the B-52's

  • I Love That Game!!!!!!!

    Hot Lava!

  • Back to watch this fantastic video. If only they stayed this way for a while...

  • i love this drugged out drowsier version, drenched in reverb; sexy.

& yeah, cindy wilson is so amazing it hurts.

  • This is so kick ass for many reasons This song is deeply sensual yet Kate and Cindy are dressed like their ready to go to church. So awesome!! The drag queen is killer!!.

  • I saw them at Madame Wong's-Chinatown(LA) about '79 or '80 just before Rock Lobster went into heavy rotation, at KROQ. They had that great Talking Heads vibe but rocked a lot harder, I was hooked and those songs still hold up all these years later.

  • I remember being a young teen when B52s came out in Georgia. There was like 5 of us in the whole state that got them. This is back when Lynyrd Skynyrd Aerosmith (Toys in the Attic) Foghat, Stillwater ruled the airways in Georgia. That they exploded out of Georgia during those times makes them all that more remarkable. The whole scene in Atlanta and Athens was incredible.

  • Why is Paulie Shore dancing in this?

  • I love this version as well, its so smooth, you really feel the song... Hard to describe but this just pulls you in. Can't help but move to it! I see a lot of people talking about Cindy, but I can't take my eyes of Kate and that long beautiful hair. Such a good video!

  • honestly this sounds pretty terrible compared to the studio version...

  • Re the "dancer" with sunglasses -- I'm sorry but it looks like some demented drag queen just wandered in from the street --- or maybe her father owned the studio? That aside ---- what a buried treasure this is! THANKS.

  • one of bestest things on the internet, for sure!

  • My goodness, we were all so young-looking back in 1978.

  • Brand new for me, this performance is subdued, slower and sultry! 30 years of Lava Love!

  • youll never replicate that climax

  • Just noticed that in the Hero Worship video they are using 2 Mosrites! Kate plays the other.

  • @mtsn I hate to sound like this but Kate was playing a SIlvertone in that video. The pickguards do look similar though.

  • @101Volts i tried to find some differences in the pickguards because they were indeed similar but not identical but couldnt spot any that was very noticeable so I assumed it was another Mosrite. I nearly thought it was a Danelectro 59 (like Page's) but the pickup didn't look much like the "lipstick" ones in the video (it looks thicker), another thing that made me think it was a Mosrite instead.

  • @mtsn I think its the same guitar as seen in a video uploaded by giantsno1. (watch?v=5B3SUpzw4cw)

  • @101Volts There's a good closeup of it around 2:35 in the video I linked to.

  • @101Volts the one in the private idaho is indeed a silvertone. The headstock solves the equation, the silvertone has some kind of a "crescent moon" shape, while the mosrite is almost plain.

  • holy crap this is amazing.

  • they are the coolest band ever... freakin Cindy is so cool.

  • It's odd, Cindy looks so much better than Kate when they were young.

  • Kate Pierson looks like she was at a church bake sale, and someone slipped some LSD into her Diet Coke. Don't get me wrong -- I love this video!! I watch it over and over.

  • Man, I totally dig this version of the song. It has a '60s/psychedelic/California feel that works really well.

  • whos that dancing in the back?

  • for David :D

  • I heard that Ricky put bass guitar strings on his Mosrite guitar. Now look at a frame at 2:22, Guess I heard right, The top four strings are huge.

  • @101Volts well, he certainly used thicker strings , but the reason why the top 4 strings look huge is because they are the only strings on the guitar :)

  • @tecdessus There's six strings but its hard to see the bottom two. Look towards the headstock, its easier to see them there (Or pause it at a frame and you'll see them in front of the frets) And yeah, I'm aware Ricky was known to play with only four strings but he must have still been experimenting here.

  • @101Volts yeah, you`re right :) have you seen any clips of him playing his Mosrite doubleneck ?

  • @101Volts And, being chronically strapped for cash and being left handed I learned some guitar basics modifying pawn shop examples, I still can`t play the damn things but modifying is fun! I just bought a Dano 59 12 string and the thing was a mess but I think I`m getting there. And of course there is `the monster`, a 12 string with a 30 inch scale!

  • @tecdessus I haven't seen any clips of Ricky playing his double neck, Only one picture. Its not easy finding lots of early B-52's videos. And yes modifying guitars can be very rewarding. I don't think I've heard of a 30" 12 string before, Was it meant to be used like a Fender Bass VI with a set of guitar strings as well?

  • @101Volts Yeah, find the original recordings of all these old B-52s videos and films, remaster it and put it out on dvd, I would pay good money for something like that. My 30" 12 string is home made from various parts, with regular 12 string strings and regular guitar tuning at the 4th fret. I`ve just bought an allparts p90 to throw at it to see what it sounds like through an amp!

  • @tecdessus did he use a baritone guitar at some point (hence the thicker strings)? Rock lobster seems to be tuned down to C or at least this is how I play it. I think in some videos it also looks like he is not using the middle 2 strings.

  • @mtsn well I don`t know if he ever used a baritone, I think he just tuned down, he used a short scale bass for Planet Claire on a clip here somewhere, in germany in 1983. He did just use 2 top and 2 bottom strings on at least Rock Lobster, but no one really seems to know the tuning, but I did read somewhere C F F F. according to Keith Strickland ( in an interview) Ricky used various open tunings and string combinations.

  • @tecdessus there are some baritones that are clones or based on the Mosrites, so he might have tried that, Mosrite has a baritone model as well but it's too weird to go unnoticed due to its design. I read about him using some long scale guitars, that's what a baritone has as well. Google "Ricky Wilson guitar tunings" and go to the mosrite forum link, there they talk about the tunings. My tuning for lobster was close but the F's of the higher strings.

  • @mtsn I suspect that Ricky had an arsenal of guitars so anything is possible, just going through some clips here shows him with various fenders and gibsons, and on the Dirty Back Road clip it looks like a rickenbacker. see the black/white clip 52 girls by kmills74, wonder if the sg is Kates or Rickys ! yes, regular guitar scale is 25" or just under, baritone is 28". thanx for the google and forum tip:)

  • @tecdessus I think that in the Rock in Rio he is using mostly a Tele, and it seems that it's Keith's main guitar as well besides a strat. I was actually expecting to see a couple of Gretsches, I thought that some of the twangy could come from a rockabilly guitar. In a link a few pages ahead at google there's another thread of another forum that has some more songs... they say it's info from a book (which one? a b52s songbook would be great)

  • @mtsn seem to remember something Epiphone- ish in the Rock in Rio show too. funny thing, Keith said (in interview) that he (Keith) was into the open tuning thing and introduced Ricky to it who had up to then stuck with standard tuning. yeah,Keith likes the tele , sounds a bit thin these days though, needs p90s !! I suppose if you put fat strings on and tune down, most guitars will get twangy! there is a book about the B`s, have`nt seen it though :)

  • @tecdessus Mosrite guitars don't have P90 pickups, They just look like P90s. They're wound with different wire and are "Hotter".

  • @101Volts Yeah I know, 43 gauge wire and wound upwards of 11K ohms. just ordered some pups from M3 califonia cause I`m considering trying to build a lefty MOS myself. (LOL) er, don`t actually remember commenting on Mosrites having p90s ?

  • @tecdessus I saw you say "Keith's Tele sounds a bit thin, Needs P90s". But anyway, Good choice with the M3 pickups. They're supposed to be really good. Are you a member of the Mosrite Forum? They have a section of the forum dedicated to building guitars and you could probably find some useful information there if you want to build your Mo' style guitar.

  • @101Volts No, not a member of the Mosrite Forum but I have been a "guest" a few times. Just got a roller nut and a Wilkinson "Wigsby" trem, so,maybe a Bob Shade roller bridge, some pots and er, a neck and body ! I`ll probably get the templates from Guitarsupplies. A body is relatively easy but I`m having some doubts about building a neck .lol:-)

  • @tecdessus Sounds real good. I know what you mean about building necks, Carving them might be easy enough but its fretting the fretboard that gets one worried! I've thought of building my own Mo' style guitar too, Like Ricky's Mark V if I can get some templates for that model through the Mo forum. It would have a few design changes (Most notably bass tuners and interchangeable hardware) But other than that would be pretty similar to the original design

  • @101Volts Why bass tuners ? and the mk v is the same shape as earlier models is`nt it ? or is the carve different ? Anyway, I`m not decided on whether to try making a neck or chickening out and buying one ;-/ Recently I`ve had some silly ideas about alternatives to wood, and i would really like to try building a guitar out of fibreglass filler ( feel free to laugh !) It`s dense, hard as hell and very stable, Whaddya think ? lol

  • @tecdessus Because Ricky used bass strings on occasion, Even though that's pretty crazy. (He didn't replace the tuners but I think its better to go the extra step) Mark V bodies are different from the Mark I, the design makes the guitar smaller. Have you ever tried making a neck before? You might want to practice on some wood scraps or cheap wood if you decide to make one. I don't think its ridiculous to experiment with wood alternatives... (Continued)

  • @101Volts (Continued from last comment...) I don't think its ridiculous to experiment with alternatives to wood for a guitar body, I've thought of using plywood since I have a Global E70S (Cheap 60s-70s LP copy) And its surprising because when I strum the strings the guitar body vibrates a lot. So anyway, This sounds ridiculous but how resonant do you think fiberglass fiber would be? I'd imagine it would sustain for a long time but it might sound rather lifeless if its too dense.

  • @101Volts There you go ! a guitar does`nt have to be made of Honduras Mahogany to sound good, there`s a lot of plywood guitars around, many bad but some good, look at Danelectro, Masonite and Plywood ! There is also MDF ( Ibanez Talman) and Carbon Fibre has been used for necks and bodies for at least 20 years. A solid glassfibre body would be HEAVY, so it would have to be seriously chambered and I would think that that would give it a warmer tone. cont

  • @101Volts > cont. But like you I think it would sustain well, hell, even aluminium guitars sound good ! and Lucite ! Anyway, I`ve never built a neck even though I have some nice lengths of unknown hardwood lying around ,but i have refretted a neck which went well. Maybe I`ll just get a few large tubs of glassfibre filler and go to work ! :-)

  • @tecdessus Speaking of MDF, Fran from the Jag-stang forums made a Mosrite Mk II style body out of MDF. It turned out pretty good and it sounds pretty good from what I can hear in his demo video. (watch?v=tCCGnATY760&feature=player_embedded) Anyway, Good luck on the neck if you decide to build it! I haven't carved any myself, Only refretted them. Practice on some cheap wood first though.

  • @101Volts I`ll do some preliminary tests with the fibreglass first, I`ll let you know of any developments :-)

  • @tecdessus and also he's using a Tele in RIR because they have a bass player... in live settings without a bass player he probably used more the alt tunings and did the job himself.

  • @mtsn Keith has mentioned using that Variaxe stuff too, and my complaint about his thin sounding tele is probably due to most of the recent concert clips being recorded on crappy mobile (cell) phones! anyway, while we are not on the subject, I think Cindy is a babe!

  • @tecdessus he's probably using the Variax because it has a neat software that does all these crazy tunings easily (this is how I managed to get it!), its emulation of Teles and Ricks and Gretsches is quite nice, not to mention the Strat itself... Cindy is a babe and Kate looks a bit like Linda Blair doesn't she? Try fractalland (dot) com /variax/lobster.mp3, this is my first attempt (of course it's just a tone sample, not a cover). Maybe it's Gretsch + reverb only, Vox amp, Variax + POD XT

  • @mtsn He may have been trying to do that, Cover the low end by using bass strings. This is possible to do but he wasn't doing it right, He got different tone instead. Its possible to do, It just requires some custom pickups and two different amps.

  • @mtsn You're right about him not using two middle strings for Rock Lobster. The guitar was tuned like this: CFxxFF. (x means no string) I'm guessing he used the guitar seen in this video for the crazy album Rock Lobster tone. The guitar seen in this video isn't a baritone, Its within the regular scale lengths of a guitar and he modified it to accept a hybrid set of strings. He used bass strings for the lower two strings.

  • @101Volts Ricky never used the middle strings ever as far as I remember.

  • @woowoo1967 I don't think he used any G strings on their first two albums, I think he occasionally used a D string (Like for Give Me Back My Man) There are pictures of him playing guitars strung with six strings but I'm not sure if he used all of the strings. I don't know what he played on their songs made after Wild Planet.

  • Both the album version and this live version are great but I think I like this one more, Its more laid back and the guitar is tuned lower.

  • hahaha

  • Holy Flashback!!!

  • why does Cindys face go black at 1:32 ?

  • she got burned by LAVA!!

  • Reminds me of Grace Slick. Love this song.

  • Wow- what a cool, trippy, live version!

  • Wow! You know, several of us actually remember the B-52's exactly this way. Great video, and long live the Athens, Georgia music scene!

  • @kudzusalad AMEN! LOL

  • oh my god, thank you so much for this video, wish i had seen them live that time.. they were so fuckin great!

  • Amazing!

    xoxo

    The Clarences

  • I love this performance of Lava it's so psychedelic

  • Never heard this before . This is such a freak out ...love it

  • who's that person in the sunglasses?, lol

  • is that James St. James in the background with the headband and glasses hahahaa

  • Happy Birthday Ricky Wilson (March 18)

  • GREAT Video!!!

  • why I love that dancer :( I miss the dancer!

  • I am glad to see they dropped the creepy dancing beaker later in their careers.

  • gutes ding!

  • fantastic footage. the girls are so subdued here, as opposed to later :D

  • i comented before but this is so sexy i gotta say it again lava lava lava!!

  • Saw them in 1979 Australia, words escape me:=>

  • @qdos10 You lucky fuck

  • Wow, 1978???

  • Absolutely amazing!! Cindy Wilson rocks!!!!

  • Too fantastic, Fred is so cute.

  • Man I would have loved to have seen them back then. I was 5 years old but I would have loved it anyway.

  • this video seems to be outer from psychedelic 60's, the atmosphere looks so strange but cool

  • LOVE Kate's dress!!!!

  • OMG look at ricky ..a baby!!!!!!

  • Lava lava lava lava.

  • Check that chick in the back. Her part in the band is to shake and twist

  • Wow! This has a great 60's beatnick vibe.

  • this isn't such a very good audiovideo but

a very good impression about the smooth

    and kinda strange atmosphere's which

are typical for this great B-52's.....yes,great when you're high and have good company with nice people, drinks, dance, and a whole album of this music...or 2...I like it!

  • thanx 4 posting

  • What yankeerose1986 said ...yeah baby!!

  • This makes me feel stoned and sexy.

    AZ X

  • That's what this band intended people to feel like.

Looks like they were a success.

  • This is great! Thanks for sharing. The B-52's are certainly my all time favorite group.

  • Ciekawa wersja, taka surowa, oszczędna ale nie "brudna".

  • Bizarre! Fred reminds me of Joel Grey in "Cabaret," here...just saw the B's last nite(at DTE Music Thea., MI), & 40+ yrs. later, they still TOTALLY rock! & while they didn't do this song (actually my fave from the 1st album), they did tear up "52 Girls," & (of course) "Planet Claire" & "R.L." got done up for the encore. B52s Forever!

  • oooh so raunchy and dirty. love it!

  • I loooove this version so bad, so hot

  • I think it's the reverb on the vocals especially Cindy's voice making me think that. The music is the same I guess.

  • This has less of the straight-ahead dirge rock feel of the album version and feels more rockabilly-ish.

  • wow look at how long Kate's hair is

  • This is a total FACTORY feel to it. Yes; as in "Andy"...

  • Do you remember "Silent Video"? This was the shit!

  • whoa!!! fred sounds like he's from Munchkinland!

But this is one of my favorite B songs

  • woo, fred has more makeup on than kate <3

  • Glad to see they are still together 30 years later with another cool album.

  • so badass

  • isn't this wonderful? what the F#&& did we do in the 80s without youtube? Oh yeah.. stare at posters.. 26 years of lava love.. for the Bs..

  • I guess I'm glad some corporate copryright tyrant removed all the album recordings, so I had to listen to this version. It's better than the recording. But what is that thing dancing behind Her Serene Highness Cindy Wilson?

  • It's David Bowie.

He infiltrated onstage to see if he could steal the drummer.

  • Hey! I'll get in my time travel machine and take that b***h out; I've had dibs on the drummer since I was 15. Lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-ve the drummer--the sweetest face in Hollyrock.

  • Angela! We've talked about this before.

  • No, not Angela--just someone who thinks like her. Actually, if I ever did drag, I might have to be "Angela" after my favorite astronaut Angela Cartwright (Lost in Space)...

  • Hm.

  • do drag ! i like fred and kate voices just like that !°

  • I just don't make a good woman. And it costs too much to dress like the Queen Mother...

  • Doesn't that Cindy look sooo pretty here?

  • You ruined it with your unimpressive intro you made with your mac.

  • I too have always wondered who the " dancer " was?.Whom every it is was VERY ,VERY luck!

  • Very unique version. Highlights Cindy's voice. Is that Ricky on guitar? Who is the third woman?

  • Yes that is Ricky.

  • Great vintage stuff!

  • This a very old video !!!!

  • Totally Kool B-52's rule,,Cheers

  • yep im 47 and i have the first 2 albums on my memory stick in the and still crank em up who cares what anyone else thinks one of the very best EVER from the USA :)

  • fred's soooo YOUNG!

  • laid back version

  • This takes me back to wild parties and good times. This band was cool back in the day before the hits came along.

  • The B-52's arer ALWAYS great!!!!

  • I agree, They were cool even before their first album was released. They still are cool and their first album is my favorite album, You can't beat it! Everything about it ROCKS!

  • Really you're absolutely right on it man!!! The B-52 sound is coll and will always be cool. They ROCK!!!

  • They really do have flawless songs, That is what I want to achieve in songs I write. I don't think I have ever gotten tired of any B-52's song either!

  • I agree, Ive never gotten tired of The B-52's & I believe, my opinion of course, that they are the ONLY band where I LIKE EVERY SONG they've put together, every ONE!!!

  • rare video but i like the music only

  • So Caldera!

  • Fred looks like Scott Weiland here or the other way around.

  • This is so fricken cool!!! Thanks for posting!!

  • in cre di ble loved the most these days

  • this half-looks and -sounds like the residents!

  • Fred has a sort of Buster Keaton / Rudy Valentino silent film look to him don't you think? I remember that was popular then. Remember Souxie's Theda Bara look? Fezboi you rock.

  • ricky underrated guitar legend! great version

  • Like the guitar work!!!!

  • This is an awesome find- thanks!

  • Wow! this is RARE! really early stuff.Thx 4 posting!

  • What's with the person in the sunglasses?

  • OMG.......Cindy Wilson is consistently divine, I knew that then...I know that now. Fred's lipstick and eyeliner are absolutely DA BOMB! Kudos for putting this up for the rest of us to enjoy!!!!!!

  • This series of video are priceless!!!! Like entering atime machine.

  • I think I'm gonna jump a crater!

  • see ya later!

    awesome.
