Got an emulator to try the sequel, S.L.A.I., it was terrible compared to the original. Definitely missing some fluidity in the combat. When I played Phantom Crash I felt like I was in the mech, dodging bullets. In S.L.A.I it just felt like i was playing an arcade game.
I found this in a bargain bin in Wal-Mart in maybe grade 7 and I LOVED this game. I had so many mechs and I'm pretty sure I logged over 150 hours on it. The only thing that pissed me off was how you couldn't customize those 'legendary' mechs.
This video brings back great memories of playing the game, by far one of the best Mech games ever. come to think of it i might go and buy it from Play N Trade and try to play it on my 360.

@Blckspawn0 theyre mostly the same, theres not a war in either game. but in Phantom Crash you had 3 main companies producing SVs, and in S.L.A.I. you have 5 companies, and more arenas. And in Phantom Crash I think people generally haven't realized that chips can die yet.
If you want to try a different combo to beat Roy by the way - get a Holy with two lasers. It will cost to upgrade the mech to be able to carry the weight, but will be worth it. That way you don't need to reload at all, but you'll need to get closer to him.
I'm still angry at this game. one of the area rankers were really easy, the other one was completely and utterly impossible!!! (for me :P) and I never had the chance to unlock the other one
@1993DJC - I found the best way to beat all three of those is to customise an Aeron with hover legs, 30mm armour, the most upgraded chip you have (it's an expensive business but worth it), and then load out with a Big Shot and at least one 12.7mm machine-gun - if your SV goes over-weight, customise the legs so that they'll hold the weight. It will slow you down but the extra-weight will give you more durability, which is vital....I'll continue with strategy in the next post.
@1993DJC - so, strategy. Hide. You can do it in all three areas, none are completely safe, but it works. If you're trying to knock Roy out in Shinjuku, get up to the top of the Paoasonic building by jumping up on the building to the right. When on top of that, try picking him off with your big shot whenever you see him, making sure you knock out any reload ships with your machine gun when they look like they're going to one of the other reload areas bar the one next to you...TBC
@1993DJC - you'll need to reload a few times, and make sure he does not see you because that Gatling gun HURTS LIKE A BITCH. It will take some time and probably a few restarts but you will succeed if you stick with the plan. As for Siba in Shibuya, he's much easier. Again though, hide. I'd be tempted to stay up top until he's appeared and dropped down one of the holes, and then blow up the buses, cars barrells etc for some cash (a tactic to be employed in all areas by the way)....TBC
@1993DJC - I'd then drop down the main hole and jump on to the ramp where the light hits it. From there you can watch out for him and also any reload items that drop down. Same plan - whenever you see him, blast away with your big shot as well as the machine gun, you'll soon beat him. Remember, by the way, if he's directly under you on one of the ramps, fire your big shot on to the ramp - he'll incur damage due to the blast radius of the weapon. Very sneaky, but use it. TBC.....
@1993DJC as for Tienxia in Aqua-line, stalk him using the big shot to hit him from distance whilst shooting down any reload ships if it looks like he's going to replenish his energy. Very easy. There is a fourth one to beat by the way - the "First Ranker" Yuki. And she's rock hard, but beatable.
This game was played fast, fast fast! I moved like a Funnelweb spider and only struck out from a single hiding place when the Optical Camouflage was available. The rapier armament was the only thing I needed. Then, on the brink of its depletion, I'd abscond, hiding, watching my radar for nearby signals.

I liked them both A LOT and without a doubt they both are the funnest games to come out before the rise of the 360 and PS3.

@KoutetsuTenshin Not really on the normal Xbox is fine from 60... and lowest I can think of around 25-30 fps if things get REALLY chaotic... on the 360 it's a different story. Its 60 FPS fine when you are alone like out on the testing field but its horribly laggy in actual competition... like 5-10 fps Laggy! Makes no sense why a 360 plays more poorly that it's downgraded cousin the Xbox when it comes to this game, but this I do know of as I have tried myself.
Luckly I still own it. It's a fun game and there is no stoping that. It has a great soundtrack, good gameplay, good controls which were not too coplex but not too simple. It also has a good mech customization scheme as well. The storyline was okay but it added that flavor to how you get to know which character goes on which map and all. Overall it gets a 100 thumbs up and 20 out of 20 on rating. That is just my opinion.
Phantom Crash, Potentially one of the best contenders for Arena based fast paced action on the X-Box, it was fun, the sound track was legendary and the interface was great, the sequel lacked the same style and removed several of the features which made phantom crash iconic.
If I was a corporation remaking phantom crash, I would make the original, with more Guns, custom chip options, Options for flying parts and external weapon options like ion cannon link up.
Easily one of the greast mech games for the original xbox i just recently found my copy of it in the basement.... and rebeat it and god that game was designed for one purpose and one purpose alone... Xbox Live
Huge story mode which takes forever to complete fully, immense customisation of your individual Scoobee's, stunning graphics and soundtrack, and playability which will keep you coming back again and again and again - in fact I still am 7 years after I purchased the game. I'd love to show off some of my customised SV's and some of the battles I've had.

i have this game but it always stuck when im searching for legs in te wild parts and sometimes in battle, my favorite type is the ventuno robots and the penetrate struck and a canon/303 but the best weapon in this game is a level up 100 the first weapon when you start it damages 15000 but to tune up to that level you need 70000000 so thats little bit difficult you can found this game in some gamestop in L.A.
wow, bring back alot of memories, loved this game. My favorite load out was the light type, human legs, recoilies rocket, (it had a large splash radius) the drill, and cloak. I was all short range but i had speed and stealth. If this game had xbox live, it would definitaly would be the best game ever.
Chromehounds is a great game- I spent aaaaages getting rank S on every mission. It's a much much slower game. Phantom crash was just so fast but really had a Ghost in the Shell feel too that I loved!

Yes, but it's extremely poor. I tried it once, and it crashed almost as soon as I tried to rumble with it. And it was hugely lagging in perhaps the thirty seconds I actually got to play.

I didnt know you could progress though towards an ending, i just thought it was like online multiplayer matches but just with bots : /
I got three guys in this. Loads of fun. Made a Holly with all 4 weapons being machine guns. Makes invisibility useless, also if you stand still for any length of time, the guns turn you into swiss cheese. Got an aeron with 2 machine guns and multi rockets on back, sometime switch guns for hedgehogs and fire off like 10-16 shots at people. I got a kojima with dual daggers and dual machine guns for stealthy fun.

The Photon, Holy, and Aeron all have their pros and cons. Me personally i make a Photon that has 2 legs with the lvl 99 light upgrade
1 mm gun thats 99 light a body thats 99 light . Then get 60 secs of oc time and get a knife that uses all avalible weight and goes heavy. Your fast and if your smart nothing can kill you because your going so fast :D (if i remember correctly i was going 225)

I don't have an xbox anymore, but I still got the game. I'm so attached to it... I miss my SVs and my chip (It was a sarcastic one) D=. This one is my fav. game. Oh, I wish that there would be a good secuel, a multiconsole one, and onlie XD (yeah, I'm wishing something almost impossible). Too bad konami bought the rigths and released S.L.A.I on the PS2. one of the many reasons i like this game is because... the mech are easy to kill including yours lol, so it forces you to know what your doing, you have to know how to pilot these things. lol i few missles will take you out, me personaly, i got 4 heavy guns, lock it, kill it !!! oh and always get bird chips!!!

To GolemMaker: If you're wondering what to do, it's pretty simple:
1: Defeat every Ranker (day or night) that is the leader of a lettered class.
2: Once you have defeated each D through A Ranker in one of the areas, you can take a shot at the most powerful Ranker there (the Area Ranker) every 15 days. This Ranker is different than the previous ones; he has much more durability and stronger weapons.
3: When you have defeated all three Area Rankers, you can try to defeat the First Ranker.
And that's why the PS2 was so much more successful, right? Besides, I'd rather not pay and get a more plain online than pay to spend all day listening to thirteen year olds insult each others mothers.
Ever hear the saying "Sellouts get recgonized, and the ones who choose not to sell out don't?" Phantom Crash has to be the only game that I can honestly say made me spend more money on xbox supplies. I love it, as for the ps2 version..eh, send me a copy and I'll tell you which is better. :)
Simply go to American Stars on day 6. The one in the middle has an arm called the T23SVATC (??? Scoot Vehicle Anti Tank Cannon. It kicks a** !!!). I recommend buying two (so each arm has one installed), but I must warn you that each costs around 604,000 New Yen. With the right moves , I have DESTROYED even the Master Classes!!

Easily one of the greast mech games for the original xbox i just recently found my copy of it in the basement.... and rebeat it and god that game was designed for one purpose and one purpose alone... Xbox Live

Quite simply the best game ever.
Huge story mode which takes forever to complete fully, immense customisation of your individual Scoobee's, stunning graphics and soundtrack, and playability which will keep you coming back again and again and again - in fact I still am 7 years after I purchased the game. I'd love to show off some of my customised SV's and some of the battles I've had.

i've heard phantom crash is really buggy if you try and play it on a 360... Is that true, and how bad is it? I really dont want to buy an original xbox just to play this lol... Such a great game.

buggy? no, but its sooooooooooo slow, so much better on the original xbox than on the 360, must be something to do with the emulation.

i have this game but it always stuck when im searching for legs in te wild parts and sometimes in battle, my favorite type is the ventuno robots and the penetrate struck and a canon/303 but the best weapon in this game is a level up 100 the first weapon when you start it damages 15000 but to tune up to that level you need 70000000 so thats little bit difficult you can found this game in some gamestop in L.A.

wow, bring back alot of memories, loved this game. My favorite load out was the light type, human legs, recoilies rocket, (it had a large splash radius) the drill, and cloak. I was all short range but i had speed and stealth. If this game had xbox live, it would definitaly would be the best game ever.

Chromehounds is a great game- I spent aaaaages getting rank S on every mission. It's a much much slower game. Phantom crash was just so fast but really had a Ghost in the Shell feel too that I loved!
I don't think the two games compare, I still have phantom crash for when the 360 just can't cure the itch :L It only cost me 3 quid aswell :D

Yes, but it's extremely poor. I tried it once, and it crashed almost as soon as I tried to rumble with it. And it was hugely lagging in perhaps the thirty seconds I actually got to play.

the shoulder cannon and the laser, the sword and a shotgun, also my wolf 2 chip was upgraded to the max as well

All I remember is that it starts off with some sort of drumming on like pots and pans and tin cans and things like that, then progresses into the rest of the song.

I think the song was called Down, or Sex For Nostalgia. I think it was by some group called Eisen or something along those lines.

This was one of my favourite games at the time :D
I was pretty good at it if i remember, had loads of cash, tonnes of kick ass robots, my best one having 2 lasers that fired together destroyed anything in 3 seconds ^^
I didnt know you could progress though towards an ending, i just thought it was like online multiplayer matches but just with bots : /

I got three guys in this. Loads of fun. Made a Holly with all 4 weapons being machine guns. Makes invisibility useless, also if you stand still for any length of time, the guns turn you into swiss cheese. Got an aeron with 2 machine guns and multi rockets on back, sometime switch guns for hedgehogs and fire off like 10-16 shots at people. I got a kojima with dual daggers and dual machine guns for stealthy fun.
By my description there you can see what you can do with this game have fun

First,i don;t think the drill could "epiclly destroyed everyone" the drill has lot's of flaws,the aiming sucks,the lock-on sucks,the dmg sucks.(even when fully heavy tuned)....

For those of u who havent played this game since its release, it WAS online capabe.
Genki thought this game failed because not many people were buying it so they got rid of the online for it.

seriously, if this game had xbox live, itd b a HUGE hit.
millions of players customizing and trading parts and chips and whatnot.
battling against millions of other players with totaly different gear and in different arenas, etc.
basically, in my opinion, it would have been a "world of warcraft" for xbox live.

and btw holy's suck. however i cant remember the one i used but its symbol was the one that looked like a grunt from halo, 2 shoulder mounted lv99 heavy 4rockets and 2 lv99 light machine guns. mmm mmm ripped anything to shreds. especially any holy's lol

yeah this game is in my xbox top ten best of all time. ummm i have the song by mona lisa the japanese version. umm not on this computer tho...hmmm uts titled awake to love by mona lisa. pretty hard to find but its worth it. awesome game. oh yeah and holys dont suck. theyre made for players who would rather rely on pure skill than on overwhelming ammo and speed or power. i personally preffer areon. mine was fully heavy.like a tank. if this game had xbox live. man bungee woulda been in trouble.

The Photon, Holy, and Aeron all have their pros and cons. Me personally i make a Photon that has 2 legs with the lvl 99 light upgrade
1 mm gun thats 99 light a body thats 99 light . Then get 60 secs of oc time and get a knife that uses all avalible weight and goes heavy. Your fast and if your smart nothing can kill you because your going so fast :D (if i remember correctly i was going 225)

hmm intresting,but there ARE weapons with a higher dmg when heavied and u'd get owned by yuki if you tried that.First she'd spray u with her random side-to-side laser thing,then the shotgun missles,if u survive that she has a fully heavied gun...

I don't have an xbox anymore, but I still got the game. I'm so attached to it... I miss my SVs and my chip (It was a sarcastic one) D=. This one is my fav. game. Oh, I wish that there would be a good secuel, a multiconsole one, and onlie XD (yeah, I'm wishing something almost impossible). Too bad konami bought the rigths and released S.L.A.I on the PS2. Damn Sony, It gets a lot of great games (not saying that SLAI was great, since I haven't played it).

Actually, vid, you forgot to mention the fact that the area rankers have completely different mechs entirely.
You can actually use them in the remake on the ps2, but the Xbox version is still better..
And a hell of a lot easier to control..
The remake is called "S.L.A.I"

one of the many reasons i like this game is because... the mech are easy to kill including yours lol, so it forces you to know what your doing, you have to know how to pilot these things. lol i few missles will take you out, me personaly, i got 4 heavy guns, lock it, kill it !!! oh and always get bird chips!!!

To GolemMaker: If you're wondering what to do, it's pretty simple:
1: Defeat every Ranker (day or night) that is the leader of a lettered class.
2: Once you have defeated each D through A Ranker in one of the areas, you can take a shot at the most powerful Ranker there (the Area Ranker) every 15 days. This Ranker is different than the previous ones; he has much more durability and stronger weapons.
3: When you have defeated all three Area Rankers, you can try to defeat the First Ranker.

The sequel on PS2 had online play. I don't think it's still alive, however. It was called SLAI - Steel Lancer Arena International.

Ever hear the saying "Sellouts get recgonized, and the ones who choose not to sell out don't?" Phantom Crash has to be the only game that I can honestly say made me spend more money on xbox supplies. I love it, as for the ps2 version..eh, send me a copy and I'll tell you which is better. :)

Simply go to American Stars on day 6. The one in the middle has an arm called the T23SVATC (??? Scoot Vehicle Anti Tank Cannon. It kicks a** !!!). I recommend buying two (so each arm has one installed), but I must warn you that each costs around 604,000 New Yen. With the right moves , I have DESTROYED even the Master Classes!!
