Standards have their place in jazz! I consider them a training ground for improvisation. So if you want to sound like Holdsworth or McLaughlin then I would suggest you start out by learning the standards and evolve into a more modern style. Standards tend to have more complicated chord progressions that are a great training ground. Learn how not to get lost in the progression first then get your legatto on!

Not so much intelligence as point in musical evolution.
A lot of the theory stuff used in jazz is actually very recent in it's development.
