cod3x001 you're ignorant and stupid, because you know the moment they go on the road of public sharing they are subject to opinion and criticism. I love tower of power, and hope they can find better talent.
Guitar player wrong for band - hey. it's willie fulton, the original guitar player. how can he be wrong, when he's on social lubrication still a young man nightclub etc - and good enough for steve cropper not to pick his axe and overdub for Bump City - i hope i've never been an idiot in the youtube comments section - because it sure seems easy-like this take that Jeffries/Filippo don't cut it. Just stop. If you saw this band, heard board tape morning after that we did, you'd cringe in shame
The drummer totally-loses the groove on the 2nd song 'cause he's standing. His drum-kits all-wrong for this (either that or it's his hands). And how can you play Tower Of Power songs with a Strat? He's not the only guy to do it either - I think the guy who was playing for them in '91 had some kind of Super-Strat sort of thing. Bruce Conte played those old songs with a '57 Les Paul gold-top, which is about as far away from a Stratocaster as you can get. I really-miss the lineup from the 3rd album
Unfortunately, this was probably the all-time low-point for the band. Rocco's gone, Emilio looks terrible, the guitarist is all-wrong for the band, and....... Jeez, I don't even recognize half these guys. Drummer needs to hit that beat harder during the 2nd verse. Watch the Soul Train performance. THAT's the way you do this song. I like that version the most. It's a bit more-raw than the single (I wish they put that song on "Live And In Living Color" - It really-should have been a double-album).

i was raised in richmond ca, one day i was siting on a fire hydren talfin to one of my homies we must of ben 13 or 14 years old and this early model volkswagon (69) pulls up and this brother reaches his hand out the window and says check this out and hands us two 45 records and says well be comming out soon look for us. we siad cool and i looked at the record and it said tower of power bump city. we didnt have to look to hard for them
this was shown on u.s.a. network back in 83! irecorded it and still have it. pieces of a dream were also there. there was also another band.soon as i play it i will tell you but all i know is that hole show was the BOMB!
i dont know if larry braggs was the best, but, i certanly enjoyed watching him in the mid 80s strut his stuff. he was good. the thing i liked about him the most is a line he once aid during a show, how he use to cut class to go and watch these guys play, after all, they WERE the sound of the SF bay area. lucky, some people get to realize their dreams.
@Perryvision you're entitled to your opinion, but I think most TOP fans would choose Lenny Williams as the best vocalist, or Rick Stevens - and those two are the voices on all the hits. Michael Jeffries - the singer in this video - was certainly one of the better ones, though, and stayed with the band longer than most, roughly 1978 through 1983. He just had the bad luck of coming aboard when they were on a downward swing.
Wow - - THE CHESTNUT CABARET.... I used to see TOP in the Tom Bowes era... it was so cool... if you got their early you could stand right under the horns... place would pack be backed -- kinda like a large restaurant without seats (well except along the walls) but when TOP came out the energy was so over the top. To be honest, even though the band is 100x better than ever now than ever, I kinda miss being able to see them at clubs like that (minus the vomiting and next day hangover.)
He's name's Michael Jeffries how sang on the albums "We Came To Play" and "Back To The Street". To my opinion, Lenny Willams & him are the best singer TOP had so far.
Ummmmm...........No. Not even close. Are you one of those people who think all lead singers look alike ? He looks a lot more like Michael Jackson before the mutant make-over.

This, I know. I'm not dissing them just noting how humorous it is. You know, to look back and laugh. Trust me, I had a Don Johnson "Miami Vice" padded-shoulder blazer of my own back then, but these fashions are not as timeless as, say, John Coltrane in a suit circa 1961.
how in the name of Ralph Macchio in Karate Kid II can you say that ? We said the same things about those polyester jump suits in the 70s and ... oh wait. Those were flakey as hell, too. BTW...TOP has gone through every black singer since Sam Cooke. This guy is totally forgettable. Lenny Williams set the standard and they never got on track afterwards, IMHO
man....these guys were funkin it up bad back in these days...now their sound has gone more...i don't know, main stream. They even have basically the same rhythm section today. There's just something about this TOP era that had groove and meaning.
I recently discovered that Michael Jeffries was once the lead singer of a local Bay Area group called The Two Things In One, back in the early 70's. Michael performed the vocals on all of their singles Together Forever, Overdose, & Silly Song. There was also a rare never before released recording by the same group. The name of the singles are Choirs In My Teardrops & Let's Get It Together, produced by ROCK-WAY RECORDS back in 1970.
bell is definitely smaller but the overall horn tubing is flugel for sure. Maybe its just an older horn. Going to the Fresno CA fair on Oct 8th, AWB and TOP, Gonna be good.
I lived in the bay area...I saw them more than once...when this album came out...also, I've seen them in southern Califonria...many times. Huey Luis had one of the horn players in his concern..just saw him in a concert...
