  • I also spent most of my child hood at HighBridge park which is also known as Spider Man Village, that was my playground. I still go back from time to time. Not to mention they use to throw raves jams down there at night.

  • Thanks for uploading this real informative I'm familiar with the area. I remember the gas station on 181st which closed down.

  • Great, I really enjoyed it!

  • Great stuff. I grew up in Washington Heights in the 50s at 185th and Ft. Washington. This stuff brings back so many memories.

  • I asked my ex brother in law who still lives in the area and is NYPD about the gas station on 181st/Amsterdam and he says the place was always trouble. Lot of homeless harassing customers, druggies/crackheads...and was "pay cash first then pump". I know allthe Bronx buses stop on that corner before heading over the bridge and its always a busy corner. Contrary to what I read on one of these posts...most street merchants do not have a permit...basically bring all your stuff into the sidewalk!

  • Awesome! Thank you! Best I've seen here on the old neighborhood. I Grew up in NYC (177th/Audubon). The historic "Lighthouse" on 8:12 is not a lighthouse but a belltower. My father lived on 173rd/Amsterdam right across the street from the tower. He remembers the tolling carillion bells in the 50s. I actually climbed it in the late 70s...unathorized of course. It was full of trash, old wiring and original perforated music rolls were strewn all over...wish I would've kept some of that stuff!

  • Great video, thanks

  • Hey all, check out the new teaser trailer for the new TV show coming soon called "Uptown" about Washington Heights in the 1980's based on true events. Type in uptown teaser in the search box and please also visit uptownseries(dot)com Thanks and enjoy!!

  • Thank you.

  • I'm writing a story about that takes place in Washington Heights and this video was incredibly helpful. THANK YOU!

  • Great video

  • Heloo from a Washington Heights native, 1951 -1971. born St, Elizabeth's Hospital, grew up in Incarnation parish. The tunnel you show was open early 1970s. Spent my childhood years playing in Highbridge. I saw the construction of the Alexander Hamilton.

The only think wrong with your antenna is that it doesn't have tin foil hanging off it.

This is a superbly well-done photo essay.

  • Nice vid you should document the historic jummel mansion the house on 160th and edgecombe was once used as george washingtons headquarters. and also the historic lighthouse and the library on the same street not to many people know about it..... i never been inside of the mansion even though i have lived 5blocks away my entire life.

  • the tunnel your refering to was a trolly right of way which stopped around 1944 , on the other side where the relief area is on the left of camara view facing forward of the tunnel exit was a trolly stop , if you go there again , you might find some trolly rails poking thru the payment ,

  • I DONT LIKE THIS GUY HE SOUNDS LIKE A RACIST PIG!!! The Gas station closed because the cost became more than the income not because they didnt report all the business, F'n meat head!

  • I live in washington heights...i learned alot from watching this, like that abandoned tunnel.

  • the closed tunner your refering to was a trolly right of way that ended around 1945 when the city and the oil complays was pushing bus service , if you look closely arount the ares you might see the old trolly tracks under the concrete , the relief area outside the tunnel was a trolly stop

  • @boo70bearjo opps! i spelled tunnel wrong ...sorry

  • @boo70bearjo No, it was not for trolleys, it was for cars and buses. The tunnels (under 178th and 179th Streets) connected the Washington (181st St.) and George Washington bridges with each other, before the current highway that runs between 178th and 179th Streets was built. The first shot (with just a gate) that is said to be one end of one of the tunnels in fact isn't, the second shot (with the archway around it) is.

  • Thanks Joe....Preciate the tour.

  • I wonder if the pool is still open at Highbridge Park, use to love going there in the late 70's early 80's.... Great pictures of my hometown, Thanks for sharing...

  • @pr2409 yes sir it is still open.

  • good stuff...do something about soundview park in the bronx.

  • Why you say that the people selling bag on the store fronts is the cause why a gas station closed...Never saw a gas station selling suite case and women bags..for your info. No body can sell anything in the streets of NYC without a permit. You also say The High Bridge park is a dangerous place. You must not be from the neighborhood and just because you dont see a old white guy jogging in daisy dukes dont mean the park inst safe. No park is safe in NYC at night. Get your shit clear.

  • Why has the merchant on the corner closed up. Was it definitely because of the street hawkers or mismanagement or poor customer service. It just seems hard to believe that a few vendors could run that business out.

  • thats were i lived and boy those were the days

  • Im a native new Yorker but left to Florida when I was 11. Its nice to see NY again. got me a lil emotional lol I am moving back to my native home NEw york so here i come!

  • This is a good video--very interesting--I'm not that familiar with New York--but these photos show an interesting side that you don't get to see if you are a tourist--

    thanks!

  • Absolutely an Excellent job bro! I just moved to Germany from Washington Heights in Aug 2009, I live on 189th and Amsterdam. The Heights was my home for 15 Years,, I had a LOT of Fun in that badboy. THANK YOU SO MUCH. P-e-a-c-e.

  • great video / brings back lots of memories when i lived in washington heights / thanks / it is a special place...

  • Omg I love you washington heights & I miss you !

  • High bridge park is the local park every one goes to, is not as bad as it was back in the 80s and 90s, It is new york city park, the illegal stuff and part crimes and unusual stuff happen at night not just in the park but every where, long live wash heights

  • why are you saying so many bad things about Washington heights why dont you find the good things in Washington heights and talk about that ?

  • thank you. i am about to start a project is going to be about the positive stuff of wash heights,

  • what goes on in high bridge park?

  • Thanks so much for sharing. This brought back many good memories. I grew up in Washington Heights and haven't been back in years. Thanks again! Great pics!

  • Thanks for sharing. Haven't been back to the Heights since 1988. It's a unique and special place. You do a great job in guiding us through the area. Keep the videos coming.

  • i remember having that atenna when I was a kid. it was something my grandma had on her tv in the living room. but looks like "ebaygoindown" explained the details perfectly.

  • summer has been crazy this year...it's been raining so much. and now that it stopped raining, fall is already coming around. =(

  • you do an excellant job describing your city i watch all your vids

  • For the benefit of the bridge freaks, shots of the Alexander Hamilton Bridge begin at 5:15.

  • Didnt tape any drug dealers or deals or drug use (whether it was a fiend or you did it) going down? AND YOU'RE THE CRAZY NEW YORKER?

    More like urban coward,

  • FABULOUS ! ! !

I wonder why they closed the tunnel, but it makes a Great Shelter.

The Rusted, Fractured Pillar definately needs replacing, as do the neighboring pillars under that one bridge.

The Antenna looks like a UHF gizmo from the 50's. It's more of a Decorative Art thing than it is a Functional thing. Must be worth Something.

    THANKS Joe :o)

  • Did you take all the photos yourself? Were you perched on some cliff or bridge for some of them? Can you take some photos of the park on Broadway and I think the upper 90's. I forget the name. And Spuyven? I'ts been a while since I moved from New York,(Yonkers), so please forgive my poor memory. Every Saturday I used to watch all the hot latinas walk by on Fordham Road then take the bus across town to 181ST and St. Nicholas and stand on the corner and watch all the hot latinas there as well.

  • Yes I took all the pics myself. As for the park, are you talking about Riverside Park?

  • Spent way too much time on the GWB and the Cross Bronx when I was commuting from Queens to Paramus. Nice to see those roads empty, I never have.

  • The street vendors are concerning...thank you for sharing!

  • Hey Joe Thanks that was indeed relaxing, About your antenna it is a Rembrandt from late 1968, this Model was sold till about summer of 1969 my old man sold them at our store, 2 models came out every year they were the best on the market price ranging from $14.95 to $59.50 most had lifetime warranties. I bet that one is still good!

  • thank you sir, you seem to know your antennas. I wanted to use it on my bare bones tv at work [no cable] bu the pic is choppy and freezes up. have you ever heard of a "smart antenna"? I wonder how good they are

  • Excellent video. Back in the day when I lived in New Hampshire I delivered to a Gnc and a Korean Health food store on 181st St. right there. It was always a hassle. There was a Taxi rest stop i tried to park in. Iwould be interested in learning about Riverdale in the Bronx if you are looking for Ideas. And I have a question that I have never gotten a good answer for. why is it that in Brooklyn no matter where you are the address is Brooklyn but queens has all seperate cities?

  • Good Tour.. That rabbis ear set looks to be from the 70' also. Has both VHF and UHF elements.

  • Nice tour dude!

I like'd the taboo zones = "don't go in there"!

Some of those bad ares remind me of Dirty Harry or Death Wish (Charles Bronson).

I had an antenna like that, it was an Archer from Radio Shack, early 70's I think. It should work pretty good for HDTV.

  • Joe,

Thanks for the tour of your home town

very interesting really did enjoyed this very much and have a super day !!

  • WOW, Excellent documentary! Good to see some of you home turf. Thanks for posting Joe. Hey, '50's aren't that old. LOL Good stuff came out of the '50's. : )
