Your solution for the lift is simple and elegant; I like it quite a lot. I built a similar device a few years ago (video in my channel), but the lift mechanism was unreliable and eventually failed due to arcing (and then pitting) of the copper track through the ball.
Maybe you could use a clock motor for this, (hour hand gear). Use 12 marbles, 1 of which is painted a color. Then you write 3:00, 4:00, etc. on each marble waiting position. Wherever the colored marble is, that's the hour. Then use a staplegun to attach an arduino, and you'll get listed in hackaday twice more!

The wires are conected with solder,I use a copper wire.
