Yes, it is a bit too eastern-sounding.. The piece is from a CD called 'Chants de l' Eglise Milanaise' and the partite is ambrosian. The reason it sounds so eastern is because it is performed by Sr Marie Keyrouz who usually performs Syriac chants and has introduced a certain Syriac fragrance here.
To be fair, Sr. Marie has quite a vast Western repertoire and can stylistically execute Western pieces in a Western manner. If she is working with Ensemble Organum here, I would have little doubts that she is using her Syriac background at the encouragement and direction of Marcel Peres.
Yeah, well, I never said she can't actually perform in the usual western manner, I just said that in this particular piece she introduced a syriac style :). Personally I do prefer it (but that's totally a matter of taste).
